Summary: A response to Jamie X-Treme
Review: This is a response to Jamie X-Treme who states that there are no historical references to Jesus. Actually there are, Josephus and Tacitus are both respected historians from the first century A.D. that do indeed mention Christ. It also bears mentioning that Tacitus was a pagan and Josephus was a Jew. Other first century historians that mention Jesus include Phlegon, Suetonius, and Thallus. Pliny the Younger, a Roman governor from the early part of the second century, also mentions Christ in his letters.

Summary: Rated #1 Classic Movie for the Christian Religion
Review: A stunning epic of the life of Christ, Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth", 1977, is a "must-see" film for all audiences, not only Christian viewers. The 6 1/2-hr masterpiece is by no means just a summary of the Biblical story, but gives you (the viewer) an in-depth and detailed look into the heart of your own Christian faith. And if you disagree with this faith, are undecided, or in ironic terms "unaware" of Christianity, it is time to let this film (as well as, and not at all forgetting, the Holy Bible) speak to your heart.

And a FYI to those of us in our little comfort zone of Christianity...this film also breaks and reaches past the boundaries of our traditional views, including popular opinion that one should keep their distance and not rub shoulders with the ungodly world we live in, lest we might become defiled and sinful. But as the actor Robert Powell (starring Jesus) phrased it: "I did not come for the righteous, but to the sinners, that they may enter the Kingdom of God even before you do."
He also makes it very clear to the Pharisees that their boastful self-righteousness or public religious demonstrations will in no way send them to Heaven and condemn the rest of the commoners and the poor. "Everyone is welcome at my Father's table," he said. It is amazing how the movie captures the importance that one is chosen by the election of God, rather than by meritting Eternal Life through one's own deeds or works.

I recommend "Jesus of Nazareth" to watch with your entire family. With famous stars including: James Earl Jones, (one of the wise men); Anne Bancroft, (Mary Magdalene); Ian Holm, (Zera, chief priest of the Sanhedrin); Christopher Plummer, (King Herod); and Robert Powell as the Nazarene.

This motion picture has captured the imagination of the church world today, and if you haven't yet seen the film in its entirety, please do yourself a favor and get it on VHS or DVD.

Summary: A WONDERFUL MOVIE
Review: THIS IS THE BEST! I've seen most, if not all, of the
movies that told of our savior. The directing, the
locations, the acting...just how the movie was arranged
is WONDERFUL! About the gentleman who gave this movie
a 1 star rating, well, I suppose everybody is entitled
to his/her own opinions, and you don't have to believe
in Jesus or Christianity. BUT, Christianity is THE ONLY
TRUE religion. Everything that we have about Jesus
is primarily based on faith rather than scientific
evidence - though science can prove its history.
Remember, 12 people, including a latecomer, Paul,
wouldn't zealously given their lives and made Christianity
what it is today if there wasn't any truth to their
mission. They have been with Jesus, they've seen
what He did, heard what he had said...so there's good
ground that it's 100 % true...the other religions
that you've mentioned doesn't have much validity
since they are more akin to the pagan gods of the Romans
with which Christians tried to abolished long ago.

There is only ONE god and ONE truth and that is Jesus
and the legacy He set-forth to his followers. And so,
it is ours for the taking.

Going back to the technical side of the DVD...I say
the 1977 TV miniseries or the HISTORY CHANNEL broadcast
had better texture of film...the DVD texture is not
as rich or vibrant in color as the TV broadcasts.

A wonderful movie.

Summary: Jesus of Nazareth ~ the alleged Christ
Review: Christ was a lie! Christianity is a thought virus that was used by the Romans to control their slaves, period. No other historian confirms his existance. None of the Jewish or Roman historians living during the time in which Christ was said to have lived wrote one word about him. Plus, this movie, about the mythical son of god, is way too long and boring. And another thing, why don't they make some movies about all the other highly-served gods out there, such as Allah, Buddah, Wicca, and Thora? The very fact that they're all false is what would (and does) make them so similar.

Summary: The Present Standard For Biblical Films
Review: When this masterpiece first aired in 1977 on NBC, the Christian world was shocked by its realism. Many churches initially protested the broadcast. The clergy urged their members to "spread the word" that the film "degrades the Son of God'. How times have changed. Even the Pope recognizes the tremendous value of this miniseries. And the film became a blockbuster hit when it was first aired, pushing NBC to run it again in 1981.

True, many Anglo actors make up the cast, including British actors Robert Powell (clearly the best portrayal of Jesus in all cinema) and Olivia Hussey (a most beautiful and talented Mary). If this film were made today, the cast would include far more actors from the Middle East, I would guess. But in 1977, political correctness was less of an issue.

Director Franco Zeffirelli originally wanted to portray Jesus as scholars of the time felt Jesus looked, but in the end he went with the popular, more accepted look found in Christian art - perhaps in an effort to appease the critics.

To me, what is remarkable about this production is the constant reminder that Jesus was a Jew, with numerous scenes of Jewish ritual. This had never been done before in film.

Originally, the final scene in the film was to be the empty tomb, allowing the viewer to decide whether Jesus was resurrected or His body had been stolen. It was later decided to end the film by adding the scene where Jesus meets with his apostles (a tender, most moving moment) and looks into the camera and says "I will be with you always, even to the end of time".

At six and a half hours, some may feel this film is too long, but I can't imagine how this great work could be shortened. But I have only one minor criticism - as good as the print on these discs is, it would be even better to have this film remastered and letterboxed, if possible. But this is a very small observation, and should not keep anyone from purchasing such a milestone in television history.

Summary: A MUST for any born again believer
Review: This is a miraculous movie. It shows Jesus' entire life according to the gospels, and it very accurate. Robert Powell is a wonderful actor that played Jesus wonderfully. He is one of the best actors I have ever seen! I rank him up there with Charlton Heston portrayed as Moses. This is an absolute Must for any Born again Christian believer!!... or anyone!!

Summary: WHY IS JESUS ALWAYS WHITE?
Review: Why can't American Christians finally admit to themselves that Yeshu bin Yusef (Jesus's real name) wasn't white? In fact, as a 1st century C.E. Jew he probably looked far more like today's Palestinians than fair-skinned blue-eyed Richard Powell. But if historical fantasy is your thing and you have an aversion to thinking for yourself and examining the dogmatic thought systems you have been indoctrinated in since your birth, than this the film for you.

Summary: The definitive film Christ, without special effects
Review: Franco Zefirelli, a one-time opera director, entered the "classical" film subjects with "Romeo & Juliet", and reached his epic apex with this miniseries, trimmed down to 6 hours, from reportedly dozens of hours of finished footage. Is any of that other footage still about? Let's get it out!!What sets this film apart from all others is the acting, the fidelity to the main story, and the spectacular locations and cinematography. Sure, "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "King Of Kings" (both versions), "Last Temptation", etc. have their moments, but this production -- a joint British and Italian job -- surpasses them all. I originally copied this from TV onto Beta in the mid-80s, then bought the VHS, then procured the DVD here at Amazon. There are few films I've done that with! I realise I'm biased (see my personal info), but again -- even for an agnostic film fan, this is some of the best historical filmmaking ever released. Sell your golden calves and buy this product.

Summary: incredible
Review: Could be the best acted TV miniseries of all time. The actors are legendary, and nearly every performance is outstanding. I'm surprised it didn't take home a basket full of Emmys back in '78. Watch it some afternoon around Easter or on Christmas vacation, and you'll wonder how they pulled it off. I think the biggest miracle might be the lack of genuine acclaim it has suffered. Incredible. Franco Zeffirelli was born to direct this, and its probably his masterpiece.
