Summary: Should've been released in its original WIDE screen format
Review: One of the great biblical movies, on DVD it should be presented in it's original widescreen format.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: A superb and long version ( six hours or so ) of the life
of Jesus and the people around Him. Produced for television,
so there is no widescreen. Robert Powell is excellent as Jesus.
Mostly well-know actors.

Summary: Best movie on Jesus!
Review: To be honest, I don't think there is any movie that is 100% acurate, AND entertaining about Jesus. All films seem to fall short. Yet I think, out of all that I've seen, this one comes the closest to what should be expected and required of a movie on His Life. I think Mary was protrayed wonderfully, and so was Joseph. I grew up watching this version of Jesus' life, and I have come to find myself sometimes picturing Jesus with Robert Powell's face :) He did a great job, some play Him to stern, others too carefree, this by far is the best choice for Jesus. This movie is long, but the time never bothers me, I love to watch it over and over!

Summary: A wonderful tribute to our Lord
Review: I think this is the best film on Christ, even slightly better than "The Greatest Story Ever Told" which has lots of sentimental value. This is a masterpiece & HIGHLY recommended! If you're not a believer & you want a good introduction to the life of the only one who can save you, this is a great way to begin your journey. The master tapes that this dvd were produced from must not be in the best shape; I have found that several of Artisan's releases are very spotty compared to the clear view provided by others. This has a lot of blemishes for some reason; maybe it couldn't be cleaned up any more. For quality of the film though, you can't go wrong!

Summary: 6+ hours of mind and heart captivation
Review: This film has captured the essence of the bible to a tea. The actor who plays Jesus convincingly and magnificently portrays the soul and depth of Christ. I have yet seen another film on Jesus that presents the teachings of the gospels thoroughly and verbatum. not to mention the cast of actors and actresses whom represent historical persons of the bible are extremely well chosen. What you have only been able to read about and imagine comes to life on your television screen in this awesome documentary of Jesus' life from birth till he is risen. Really a must see for any one who is unfamiliar with, interested in, or who believes in the New Testament and the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Summary: A realistic historical account for Jesus
Review: I love this movie very much. The first time I watched this movie was in the T.V. And I search for this film in DVD. This movie is very realistic. It depicts the historical background of the time when Jesus walked on earth. The costume and the environment were very good. I am sure that the working team had done a very detail and serious historical studies. Jesus in the film was no longer a handsome, golden hair, western foriegner; instead they found a not-handsome, black hair, middle-eastern man; which is more realistic, as the Bible said, "He has no good appearance." Actually, when Jesus walked on earth, he should be like this one rather than the other actors.

Several scenes are very touching: 1. Joseph's fled to Egypt. Though the movie has not said much, it is very touching when I saw Joseph walked silently with Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt. 2. When Juda asked to follow Jesus. You can see from Jesus's eyes that, he knew this one will betrayed him in the end, but he still said to him "Yes, you can follow me." Very touching, beyond my description.

Summary: Good Overview of Jesus' Life
Review: After I did an in-depth Bible Studies course, reading the Bible five times, I watched "Jesus of Nazareth" and could see inconsistencies with what I had just read. However, this movie is still a good overview. I used parts of it when teaching certain stories to my Sunday School class. If you want the Bible word-for-word, a video on the Gospel of Matthew uses only Scripture as the script.

Summary: An absolutly Wonderful movie!!! 5 stars!!
Review: Jesus of Nazareth protrays the life of Jesus Christ magnificently and powerfully with much depth. Robert Powell did a GREAT job as Jesus. I'm upset at people who complain about the hair color from the young Jesus to the adult Jesus. Blond hair as a child is known to darken with age. The blue eyes, I think even added more to the movie. Everything from the music and setting to acting and costumes were done so well, it is astonishing.

I've seen this movie so many times, I've lost count. My family loved it from the first time we saw it on TV, that we rented it many times at blockbuster, but later on they discontinued it- my family was heartbroken. But a few years later, my mom and dad found it at Costco and bought it. Since then, we watch it all the time, and it never seems to get old - truly amazing!

One of my favorite parts is when Jesus asks his diciples, "And who do you say I am?" and nobdy replys, but Simon Peter, who says, "I say you are the Christ, the son of the living God." And Jesus reveals that Peter is right, and Says, "You are Peter, and upon this Rock I shall build my Church, and the powers of Hell shall not prevail against it." The acting and the way Zefferlli directed it and ended the scene with the music and mist, added much intesity and power to the scene.

I can't get over how well Robert Powell played Jesus, his teachings and sermons, esp the one about "Loving those who do not love you, do good to those who abuse you.." How he truly protrayed the love, divinity and power of Jesus. Although, not only was Robert Powell's acting magnificent, so was Olivia Hussy as Mary, Peter Ustonv and Chistopher Plummer as the Herods, and the acting of all the diciples. The acting of all the High Preists gave insight of how there minds worked and the hatred and envy they showed towards the Lord.

Although, the birth of Jesus could have been protrayed better - it showed Mary in pain, although the birth of Jesus was actually painless. But, it didn't take away at all from the greatness of the movie. It is truly motivating, inspiring, and moving-even to tears! It is a true masterpeice, to be viewed by all - beleivers and non-believers alike, and it will captivate anyone at any age. Even my little brother (6 years old) seems to enjoy watching it, and I only a teenager show praise toward it, as beyond wonderful.

Summary: You Feel Like You Were There
Review: You must see this movie! You will never grow tired of seeing it!

I have seen it 3 times and still I see something more, or feel something more each time. Each time I have come to a new revelation/understanding. The last time I realized why Mary came & interrupted Jesus when he was 12 and already teaching grown men in the temple. She rushes up, with no regard for this, and interrupts him mid-sentence, addressing him as "son" & having "looked for him everywhere". Jesus, the boy, replies "WHY would you have been looking me EVERYWHERE? (Emphasizing her having forgotten just Whose Son he was) The tone and look you can only understand by seeing the movie, clearly illustrates that this was the beginning of the rift between Jesus & his family, indicated in the Scriputres. But during the previous watching I came to see that this thought of Him as "their son" began at the Bar Mitzvah, where the parental pride obviously caused them to forget what happened 12 years ago. You would not know all this without SEEING it acted out! Another reason this movie is so vital!

The incredible quality & integrity of this quiet, not brash or Hollywoodish prodution by Franco Zefferelli makes it seem as if you are truly there, or back there as it were, in those times, and experiencing everything as a first-hand observer. The sound is done so tastefully, the visuals are so expressive and so very moving! The true "art" with which this great director painted this real-life portrait of the life of Jesus Christ, from conception to crucifixtion, is just breathtaking! Only one other movie compares - "A Man and a Woman", a French film that won the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. You can only get an English dubbed copy of that, as far as I know, which leaves out several scenes. But it also leaves you, as Jesus of Nazareth does, feeling totally awed, and the experience leaves you changed forever. However, Jesus of Nazareth is the one you will watch MANY times in the future! It is truly a unique experience that you will keep your interest every moment! It has more excitement, intrigue & depth than most non-spiritual movies. You won't be disappointed!

As far as being "scripturally correct", most of the quotes are indeed direct, and everything but a few miracles of Jesus are in chronological order. Of course the appearance of the wise men is wrong, but most Christians who don't actually read the Bible correctly reagarding this, don't know they were NOT at the nativity, but the movie DOES give proper relevance to their roles, quite effectively so! Yet it is incorrect as portraying Herod's hysteria as the reason for killing all infants under 2 years old. He did that because of the timing the wise men gave him. Read the scriptures for yourself. The movie does reflect the proper order, but not timing.

Don't wait to experience being taken to another time & places...a trip without leaving your chair - truly! And don't miss the only opportunity on this earth to meet Jesus face to face, and feel His personality. As a mature Christian and Biblical scholar, and in very close relationship with my Father-God, I can tell you that it brings the Word (Bible) into reality, and increases your Christian/spiritual growth!

Words just can't do it justice!

I can't comment on the DVD transfer quality, as my review was accidentally written on the DVD page, as it was my first visit to Amazon. I don't know how to transfer it. Sorry. I saw the VHS version. But I have seen both good and bad re the DVD, so I think it depends on your DVD player.
