Summary: Simply The Best Depictition Ever Filmed!
Review: I have to admit that as a Christian I am always impressed by how faithfully and carefully this long and well-produced version of teh greatest story ever told is accomplished. The sets are superb, as is the acting and the presentation. The dialogue, which can easily come across as stitlted, seems natural and flows logically as the story builds towards its conclusion.

This film represents a loving tribute rendered by a director fanatically devoted to his subject. This is well worth the money and time one has to invest to sit through the six or so hours of the film. I ordered one recently as I lost my original version in a fire last fall. It still moves me as I watched it over the week before Easter. It is a lovely fim. Enjoy!

Summary: One of the best...
Review: This is easily one of the finest films based on the life of Christ. Obviously a labor of love for the director and producer, there is great passion in every detail, scene, and moment.

The DVD is a beautifully remastered event. So nice to be able to go exactly where you want to in the story. Artisan has done a fine job with this re-release.

The only drawbacks? 1) I find Powell's portrayal of Jesus a bit to quiet and laidback--I personally believe that Jesus was much more engaging and affable--why else would so many people have followed Him? 2) The English accents. Since Hollywood first began making Biblical epics, it seems that Brits must always play at least the majority of the major characters. I guess it just sounds better when the King James English comes from British mouths!

You won't be disappointed in this one.

Summary: "Lordy, but this movie is slow!"
Review: ... said a friend of mine on viewing Zeffirelli's _Jesus of Nazareth_. You could read all four Gospels in less time than it takes to view this six-hour-plus miniseries. Oddly enough, the bloated narrative stems from the film's attempt to harmonize all four Gospels (and humanize a few important side characters). By and large, I respect the attempt, although I'd have preferred a more idiosyncratic approach (like Pasolini's in _The Gospel According to St. Matthew_).

On the plus side, the film is gorgeously lensed, with a luscious musical score. The video transfer is a little fuzzy, but I think that's just soft-focus photography. Since Zeffirelli tends to overuse soft-focus, I'm inclined to excuse it. On the negative side, the audio definitely needs a touch-up.

Questions for discussion: Why is Jesus, a Jew, always blue-eyed and pale-complexioned in the movies? Better yet, why does everyone in these sandal epics speak with upper-crust British accents? Historically, these choices make no sense. It's not easy to take the film's claims to Biblical fidelity seriously when everything looks and sounds as if it were staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Summary: A review of Artisan's DVD release of "Jesus of Nazareth"
Review: STORY:
This is a story that's been portrayed numerous times. Even so, this one is special in many ways. Covering the lives of Jesus and the accompanying main characters of His time, this film stands-out for Franco Zeffirelli's masterful directing, a great cast, and splendid acting. Some of the actors are virtual unknowns, however all delivered memorable performances. Robert Powell is stunning in his role as Jesus. Anne Bancroft, as Mary Magdolin, is wonderful as well. Though nearly thirty years old, this film still sets the standard for all films in the genre.

DVD TRANSFER:
Because it's such a great film, Artisan should have put much more into this DVD set. By far the flagship of the Artisan line-up (if you don't believe me, try finding it for less than [money]anywhere), it's disappointing that they've obviously hurried this film's transfer to DVD. The transfer looks no better than what can be had on VHS, and with today's technologies at hand, at least an attempt at "cleaning-up" the film somewhat should have been in order. Also, the only extra's you will find on the two disks are short biographies and filmographies of the major actors. It would have been nice to have some commentaries from the director or actors, a "Making Of" section, and perhaps some behind the scenes footage. At [money], this is no budget-release DVD. For the sake of the film, Artisan should go back, rework it and give it the kind of TLC it deserves. After a decent transfer has been made, they could then add some of the extras consumers have come to expect when ponying-up [money] for a DVD title. If they did, you would then be able to purchase this film on DVD knowing that you're getting a TRUE 5-Star Family Treasure.

RECOMMENDATION:
If you already own the VHS version, watch it until Artisan releases something better on DVD. If you don't own a copy yet, get it on whatever format you like because there's really no quality difference.

RATING:
3-Stars overall. 5-Stars for the story, directing, acting, costumes, photography, etc. 1-Star for the horrible transfer to DVD. Film transfer quality and DVD feature set is no better than what you'd find in a [money] bargain basement DVD.

Summary: The greatest telling of the greatest story ever told
Review: With the exception of the temptation of Jesus by Satan this movie delivers everything needed to tell the Gospel story on a grand scale.

An all star cast the delivers over and over again give Robert Powell all the support he needs to pull off this role. Ian Holm (Zerah)and Ian McShane as Judas are positivally brilliant.

This movie so dominates the other pictures of its ilk that you should see if AFTER all the others. The others are mostly fine movies but the simply can't compare.

A Masterpiece.

Summary: I add my thumbs up to this version of Jesus on film
Review: For Mr. Garrard's sake (see below) I'll add my vote for 5 stars to the statistics on this piece of film making history. (Although I really liked The Matrix too..) This is the most reverent portrayal of Jesus I've ever seen, and is quite faithful to the original text. Add to this the realism, the outstanding cinematography and the ultimate cast, and you have an epic that remains today as well-respected (and well-loved) as any that has graced the small screen.

Summary: THE MOST INSPIRING MOVIE EVER MADE!
Review: I FIRST SAW JESUS OF NAZERATH DURING THE EARLY 80'S, AND LOVED IT. NOW NEARLY 20 YEARS LATER IT HAS CAME TO DVD. SADLY THE DVD DOES NOT DO THE FILM JUSTICE, HOWEVER A FILM OF THIS MAGNITUDE SHOULD BE WATCHED ON EITHER FORMAT AND BE LOVED BY ALL. JESUS OF NAZERATH FOLLOWS THE LIFE OF CHRIST. TAKING PLACE BEFORE HIS BIRTH AND ENDING WITH THE RESERECTION. MOVIES FILMED TODAY CANNOT HOLD A LIGHT TO THE ABSOLUTE POWER THIS FILM HAS. FILMS LIKE "THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD AND KING OF KINGS" DID A FAIR JOB BUT NOT LIKE THIS. THE ACTORS PLAYING THE KEY ROLES ARE SUPERBLY CAST. ROBERT POWELL AS JESUS, ROD STIGER AS PILOT, CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER AS HEROD, JAMES MASON AS JOSEPH OF ARAMATHEIA AND SIR LORENCE OLIVER. PUTTING THAT ASIDE, I WON'T BORE YOU WITH THE BASIC STORY SINCE YOU PROBABLY ALLREADY KNOW IT. BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS FILM I IMPLORE YOU TO WATCH IT, NEVER HAVE I SEEN A MOVIE WITH SUCH PURE POWER. IT HAS COMPASSION WHERE OTHER'S HAVE FAILED.
