Summary: NO LETTERBOX!
Review: The idiots have struck again! Ruined a beautiful film by cutting it up to fit a tv screen..are they all insane?!!! If I hadn't opened it, I would return it to amazon now! A flim that was shot in a wide screen format should be shown on the small screen that way. The directors vision has been ruined again by money grubbing fools! Don't buy it.

Summary: NICE STORY SHAME ABOUT THE COLOR
Review: The only Moulin Rouge film I've seen is from the TV and I would imagine the video is another U S only one. But 1952 is no excuse for such poor quality color and this is what it was like in the cinemas. Maybe the video has enhanced it.
Rodgers & Hammerstein would never have allowed anything of theirs to come out in such a state as they supervised the filming of things like Oklahoma and Carousel.
You want criticism you got criticism. The real Moulin Rouge has yet to be made as the new film leaves a lot to be desired

Summary: A DVD version requested!
Review: This film is a wonderful minor classic: great atmosphere, solid production values, and certainly well-acted. The film is among the many that cause me to wonder why it is not yet available in the DVD format.

Summary: One of the Great Arts Films
Review: To me, some of the greatest movies are about artists, because the intensity inherent in the artist is also inherent in his art, minimalism notwithstanding. And, of course, cinema is an art. "Lust for Life," "The Red Shoes," "Moulin Rouge" - each is a statement by great visual directors depicting visual art.

"Moulin Rouge" is the story of the great artist-caricaturist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Its excellence is due to the handiwork of John Huston and José Ferrer - Huston for his unflinching view of the pathos of the Parisian demi-monde, and José Ferrer for his delicious and moving portrayal of the tormented, self-absorbed artist who loved everyone except himself, which means that he never knew real love.

This is Ferrer's greatest rôle, surpassing the Cyrano which won him his Best Actor Oscar. It is so typical of the Motion Picture Academy not to get it right.

Summary: See Cyrano instead
Review: What a sad waste of Jose Ferrer's enormous talent. This is a dark, plotless, passionless tale; no characters have redeeming virtues apart from Ferrer's occasional departure from Toulouse-Lautrec's self-pity and alcholism. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.

Summary: Why not on DVD
Review: When you compare this film with the current remake you must wonder why the remake. It will be a real loss to the community of those who collect great films if this is not made available on DVD. What must one do to encourage the DVD effort?
