Rating: Summary: YOUR HEART GLITTERS AFTER.... Review: OH, GET THE TISSUES READY! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE. MARIAH WAS OK, BUT THE STORY-LINE WAS EXCELLENT! ROXCKSTAR HAS NOTHING ON THE RAGS TO RICHES TALE OF CAREY'S CHARACTER. THIS WAS AWESOME AND I CAN CRY JUST THINKING OF THE MOVIE. GREAT FOR A DATE OR TO SEE WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS, GUYS WILL LOVE IT TOO!
Rating: Summary: I Love Mariah but.... Review: I am a HUGE fan of Mariah's... but I think it was a bad idea for her to carry this movie on her own name. There should have been other big name actors/actress' to help her out. Whitney at least had Kevin Costner (The Bodyguard), Will Smith had Stockard Channing (Six Degrees of Seperation), Diana Ross had various big name actors (The Wiz) and so forth. I Agree with other reviewers stating the scenes were to short. As soon as you get into a scene it jumps to another scene that has nothing to do with the pervious scene. As far as Mariah's acting... I felt that her expressions did not fit the scene (over acting). In the scenes where she is crying, you can tell the were forced trears. Actors should become the character, so that things come out naturally. Mariah also smiled entirely to much, especially when scenes do not need such smiles.
Rating: Summary: Glitter Was off the Bangin!!! Review: Me and my friend went to go see Glitter the day after it came out which was last weekend. OOh it was an awesome movie and Mariah Carey can act for all you people who said she couldn't act. She did a good a job, with directing and acting. Billie(Mariah) and Julian "Dice" Black (Max) made a great couple in this movie. I think they would make a great couple offscreen also. Max is so hot!!! I just wanna tell Mariah to go on with her acting, you could really make it with singing and acting. Brat and Tia did an awesome job as her best friends!! I cried when she cried especially when she touched me at her concert in the movie by saying "Don't ever take someone for granted, because you never know when you will lose them!" I just wanna say "I thought that was really deep Mariah!" It would mean the world to me if Mariah had a concert in North Carolina and I could meet her and maybe get a couple of tickets and backstage passes. That would really mean the world to me, and I wish I could meet Max Beesley because I really think he is gorgeous and I love his accent. Anyway I think what happens in the end to Dice. If you haven't seen the movie then I won't tell what happens to Dice, but I really recommend that you girls take a couple of your friends, and guys take your girlfriend to this movie, and everyone don't take anyone for granted because you don't know when you will lose them! Peace Out!
Rating: Summary: Its proven All that Glitters is truely Gold! Review: Glitter was released on Friday the 21st, by Sunday the 23rd I had seen it 3 times. This movie is worth the price of admission, I would pay $15 a ticket to see it. The movie has its funny parts, thanks to Da'Brat and Tia, and its emotional parts. Overall everyone in this movie was great, but Mariah out shined them all. In her first starring role I think MC did one heck of a job. I can't wait for her other movie "Wisegirls" to come out next year. If you have'nt seen this movie, go see it, I guarentee you will love it. Mariah is soaring to the top of the actress list.
Rating: Summary: Mariah does it again Review: I saw this movie a couple of days ago, after anicipating to see it for months. I just recently got a Mariah Carey CD and it is the only thing I listen to now. So when Glitter came out, I wanted to see if Mariah could act and sing. Don't get me wrong, I love Mariah, I think she is great, but I had my doubts about her acting. She was way better than I expected. I took my little sister to the movie, and she hates Mariah Carey, but when it was over, she loved it. The music in the movie was perfect. It was all perfect 80's sound. If you don't like Mariah Carey or whatever, you should see the movie anyway just to hear the songs. The directing was great too, the director made sure that everything was authentic (i.e. 80's clothes, style, attitude) All and all, this was a really good movie, it was way better than I expected, even though it has gotten bad reviews, this is not one of them.
Rating: Summary: Mariah Glitters Review: I watched Glitter this weekend. Upon entering the theater there was a part of me that was afraid of what I would see - a horrible film, bad acting, and the demise of Mariah's acting career. As I looked around I noticed there were only a handfull of people in the theater so I immediately knew that this movie was not going to be the commercial success that a lot of people were hoping for (it's only at number 11 this week). I liked the movie a lot. The movie has no socially redeeming value, but that's not the point of it. It's meant to be pure entertainment and Mariah definitely delivers. It's a fun movie with a great storyline. There were a few scenes that were emotional and touching and Mariah's music scores the movie well. Her acting skills, though not bad, do need a little work, but this is her first movie so give her a break. She is definitely a capable actress and I'm now eagerly anticipating her next movie: Wisegirls.
Rating: Summary: Non-biased View Review: I am not a fan of Mariah Carey. I think she is a great singer who under uses her voice alot with terrible songs and even more terrible music videos. I loved this movie though. Go into this "Pop Film" with no expectations and enjoy the fun ride. It made me laugh, yell at the screen and cry. Mariah Carey may not make music I agree with or music videos that I would vote for on TRL, but the fact remains that she is a great talent.
Rating: Summary: Mariah proves the critics wrong......... Review: first off i am not a huge fan of mariah. i am a 14 year old boy who went to see Glitter with a group of friends. we were exspecting a good film, but what we got was amazing. this film is ment to be fun, and it does a pretty darn good job of that. people in the theater got up to dance many times, because its such and electrifying, and very fun film. mariah also does a great job acting. all hollywood does is bring people down, and all they wnat is oscar performances. why dont they just enjoy movies and stop putting people down. she did a great job. da brat stole the show by being a great singer, and funny comedian. i plan on seeing glitter at least two more times. it was just a fun movie, like being on a rollercoaster. u just have fun. ur with ur friends and ur having a great time. the music was incredible. its one of those movies i'm gonna buy the day it comes out on dvd. it was just so good. so give mariah and glitter a chance. u'll be surpirsed at what u find. u'll find love, music that u get up and dnace to, and just alot of fun. so go make ur own decision bout glitter. u wont be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: Uh, Mariah? Don't quit your day job, okay? Review: There's a standard joke about movie trailers that nonetheless rings true--if the narrator solemnly begins, "In a world ..." the movie is going to be lousy. When I first saw the trailer for Mariah Carey's "Glitter" and heard those fateful words, the knell of doom sounded in my mind. Still, when someone offered me a free ticket for a sneak preview I could not resist. If nothing else, it would be good for a few laughs, I thought. But no. "Glitter" takes itself deadly seriously, as does Mariah, and that turns what could have been a so-bad-it's-funny film into 100 minutes of tedium and eye-rolling. The plot, as it usually is for recording artists' vanity vehicles, is simple--Mariah plays Billie Frank, a poor kid from the other side of the tracks (alcoholic mother, absent father, blah, blah, blah) who ascends to divahood with the help of her dj/producer (Max Beesley), who then grows jealous of her success. Anyone who has seen "A Star Is Born" (or "One Trick Pony" for that matter) will know exactly how the film turns out. It roughly follows the path of Mariah's own success, complete with mean Tommy Mottola and Brenda K. Starr clones (FYI, Mariah got a start singing backup for Brenda). What makes the film ultimately ludicrous is that it is purported to take place in the mid-eighties, but the look, slang and fashions are straight outta "TRL," since these days the majority of Mariah's fans weren't even born when Reagan was president. Why this particular time frame was chosen is a mystery. Anyone over the age of 25 who sees this film will have a great deal of fun marveling at what we were supposedly wearing and listening to back then (dreadlocks? rapping? In 1983 we were wearing color-coordinated flouncy miniskirt sets and listening to Duran Duran in the clubs!). And Billie's supposedly self-penned 1983 hit, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On," was a Robert Palmer song--that came out in 1985! Videos, with the exception of Michael Jackson, were still pretty much straight performance shots, but nope, there Mariah is in a dreamy dance sequence clad in a silver bikini. This movie misses on so many levels it's amazing. At the sneak preview I attended, there were two girls, around 14 or so, sitting in front of my friend and I. Rabid Mariah fans both, they were bouncing around excitedly when the movie began. By the end, they were sitting in as much of a daze as the rest of the audience. As we filed out, one of them said, "I still love Mariah, but that movie was really bad." Out of the mouths of babes ...
Rating: Summary: A decent drama containing a promising acting debut by Mariah Review: Being a college film/music student/fanatic, this review may sound biased because I think Mariah Carey is one of the most astoundingly talented pop/R&B vocalists of all time. Her voice transcends beauty and strong, emotional compassion. As for her first starring role in a major motion picture, Mariah has revealed that she has promise as an actress. Yes, almost every major film critic tore this movie apart (and deemed her acting to be very bad), but in my eyes, not because I love her music, these critics were a bit harsh. Granted, Mariah did smile a lot, cried in some scenes, laughed and so forth...this doesn't mean that she has no range whatsoever. I thought her acting was genuine and naturally sincere (and she looked stunningly beautiful throughout). Yes, she's not Meryl Streep...but with more practice and more supporting roles, I think Mariah can improve. I thought the script for this film was mediocre (although the overall feel of the early 80s club scene seemed appropriate and true to that decade). There were many holes in the various storylines (kind of like Pearl Harbor's script which just plain ruined that film). I think if the script was written better...hence many scenes needed to be longer with more dramatic tension/emotion...this film could've been much better. I don't want to get into nitpicky details about certain scenes...but a couple bothered me. Yes, there is a short sex scene while "Lead the Way" is playing in the background. So Mariah's Billie and Max Beesley's Dice embrace behind what looks like some kind of glass shutter...a few critics said some screening audiences erupted in laughter at this scene. Does a moviegoer actually have to see the sex to be satisfied...why can't a scene like this be short/discreet, simple, and sweet? Also...toward the end of the film...Billie finds out about some tragic news (don't want to say what)...and then there is not much of a response from her character...and then she just goes out on stage at Madison Garden to sing "Never Too Far." I'm sorry to say, but this part of the film needed to be rewritten...I'm not saying it didn't work or it was Carey's fault, it just needed more of an emotional tug. Overall, once again, if the script was more refined, Glitter could've been much better. Just jumping from one scene to another, just doesn't connect with an audience. The storylines that needed to be drawn out MORE, were the ones with Billie and her mother, her relationship with DJ Dice (Beesley), and Dice's "deal" with producer Timothy (Terrence Howard). Also there should've been MORE to Billie's rise to superstardom. The film portrayed her career in an hour and a half...from back-up singer to full-fledged superstar (only portrays her rise pretty much from a 10-week #1 run of her single, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"). I expected to be somewhat moved by this film and was...but in the end, you can't entirely blame the actors for that when they don't have much to work with. Max Beesley (an English actor), pulled off the New Yawk accent very well...and his acting as a hot-shot club deejay was quite good. He and Carey had real chemistry...only one would wish more was added to the storyline of their relationship. Also, rap star Da Brat and Tia Texada are hilarious as Billie's dancers and long-time girlfriends. Lastly, many singers (as you all know) that try to cross over to film don't quite get there (Madonna...except she was outstanding in A League of Their Own...Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard...and maybe a few others). But there are those who did cross over and actually made it...Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and many others. Most people will probably think it was unwise for Ms. Carey to try and act in a film. When in the end, there is nothing wrong at all with trying (to me, it looks like she just needs some more confidence in herself as an actress). Besides, she is starring in an independent film with Mira Sorvino, called Wise Girls, that is due out next year...and in this film, her character in no way reflects her life at all. Maybe, Wisegirls will (hopefully) convince moviegoers that Mariah has a chance at something she's always wanted to do. In the end, though, she'll always have her magnificent pipes. And I am one music lover that will defend her to the hilt...she does not warble, she has an amazing voice...and she actually writes the majority of her own music (unlike most singers/groups today). The Glitter CD is worth every penny you spend if you like three genres melted into one: pop ballads, R&B/rap, and uptempo 80s dance hits...all (showcased) in the film which are stellar, esp. the ballads!!! :) Overall Grade of film: B- ...For a fan, I still really enjoyed this film and commend Mariah for her good, honest work here. :)
