Rating: Summary: great movie! Review: This movie may not be about David Berkowitz but I enjoyed it. This movie is deeper than all those dumb horror movies but also manages to create suspense at the same time.
Rating: Summary: I felt like i stepped in something nasty Review: This movie stunk on so many levels it's hard to focus on the specifics. Mix a dismally gloomy period piece, a cinemax-level porn flick, an uninspired schlock-horror movie, and a brutally underachieivng cast, and youve got the idea. Now lower your expectations by about 50%. I was really excited when i heard about this film, and to say i was disappointed is an amazing understatement to say the least. The premise was interesting, but it failed in every way possible. To top it all off, I saw this abortion in the Theatre! I'm not concerned about the money, because I deserved to lose that, but i want the two hours of my life back. Finally, I went to it with two other people, and they deserve a public apology. Sorry!
Rating: Summary: SpikeLee does it again Review: I found this movie incredibly entertaining and moving. Ithought the actors and characters were great (john leguizamo, the punk(forget his name), the guidoey dudes in the neighborhood). They were somewhat caricatures, as many spike lee characters are. In his last two movies (girl 6 and this) he's gotten into exploring sex in a whole new way, much more perverse. Vinny's dilemma can be funny, ("You, know, b--f----ing? ") but his frustration and despair are also quite relatable. Same goes for the punk, who amazingly retains the most clear image of himself and who he is, while he lives through multiple phacads. The movie revolves around the people, not the murders. Just as Do The Right Thing showed a tense situation blowing up with a catalyst being a radio, so this movie has a killer in the background who actually does not affect any of the characters who lets the mounting tensions in the neighborhood through the hot summer blow up the situation. The visuals are excellent. It's violent and sexy at times. The soundtrack is good, and excellently placed. Overall, I find Spike Lee is underrated as a filmmaker. This is another gem, perhaps his most visually stunning flick (looks a bit like an oliver stone film at times). This is a whole new take on the murder movie, it is innovative, it's got a great story, and you should see it.
Rating: Summary: wow in a bad way... Review: When I went to the movies, I thought Summer Of Sam would be completly different then from what I saw.. I was completly shocked, in a bad way. I went with a few girl friends of mine and a few guy friends of mine.. And definately the guys enjoyed more then the girls did.. I couldn't believe some of the scenes.. all of us girls were like "we paid to see this? " and the guys just LOVED it lol I really expected a better storyline.. I know it was a true story, but Spike Lee could of really choose a better point of view of showing the summer of sam murders.. But, some scenes were amazing to watch, because the direction was good.. like when Mira Sorvino and John Lequizamo were in the club dancing.. the lights and choreography was good.. but definately a lot of scenes were not entertaining AT ALL.. lol But there has been mixed reviews about this movie- so rent it if you like. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. I definately did not.
Rating: Summary: ONE STAR FOR THE SOUNDTRACK Review: Disgusting. That's all I can say. This movie had absolutelynothing to do with the summer of Sam. It was all about sex, andthat's it. The famous night of the black-out was only two minutes long. One star goes to the soundtrack, which was terific, if you like the disco. Otherwise, I felt it was a disgrace to all the victims of that summer.
Rating: Summary: NOT A HISTORY LESSON Review: If you understand that this movie is not a historical account of the Son of Sam murders, but an insight of all the different happenings that occured during the summer of 77' in NYC, including the paranioa that Sam created you might enjoy this movie.
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: I was hesitant to watch this movie, having read such mixed reviews. When I finally saw it the other night, I wished I had watched it sooner. Spike Lee does a great job of creating a story and characters that are totally absorbing. The film was intense and had me interested from beginning to end. As other reviewers have stated, this is not about Son of Sam, but about the Summer of Sam. Even though this serial killer's character was kept in the background, he took center stage because of how he affected so many others. The story was just as suspenseful as any good thriller, and on many different levels. What I found particularly interesting was how they portrayed the marriage of characters John Leguizamo and Miro Sorvino, and showed how Leguizamo's deeply ingrained religious/cultural beliefs impacted their relationship and kept him from having with his wife what he sought out with other women. The acting was great and -- Wow! -- what a cast. It was a veritable feast of familiar faces -- Bebe Neuwirth, John Savage, Mira Sorvino, Ben Gazzarra, Patti LuPone, etc. etc. A real surprise was seeing actor Michael Imperioli and then reading in the credits that he was one of the writers of the film. It would seem that the story line for his character "Christopher" on the Sopranos (where he has writing aspirations) mirrors his real-life abilities. This is one talented guy. All in all, this is a great film that keeps you thinking -- and one of those rare movies that, if you watch it again, will show you things you hadn't seen before.
Rating: Summary: A failure on all levels Review: This film tries to work on several several levels and fails at each one. As a historical reflection of the times, it was weak, there are many other films that better capture the 70's. We found out nothing about Sam Berkowitz. It totally failed as a crime film. The "message" is frivolous (for a Spike Lee film that does this part right, see "Do the Right Thing"). The central characters are totally uninteresting. Last but not least, it is loooong and booooring.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: This is a movie that every person has to see. It is a movie that shows a story of ny that alot of people know but havent seen on tv. You see the love, death, murder. John leguezamo at his best with one of the best female actresses mira sorvino and the presense of spike lee turns into a great movie. With a blend of everything and realism this is like a biography of ny. A must see for all tastes
Rating: Summary: Don't watch this movie with false expectations! Review: If you are expecting a movie that focuses soley on cops stalking and nailing down a serial killer, you will be disappointed! Summer Of Sam, (and the key word here is Summer, as opposed to Son), is more like Saterday Night Fever, (with a serial killer thrown into the background, as opposed to a dance contest)! The film showcases the lives of two friends from the Bronx, during that long, hot, disco-laden summer of "77. It particularly delves into the disintigrating marriage of one of the friends who can't stop cheating on his wife,(played by Mira Sorvino, who looks so georgous in a red disco dress you couldn't imagine why ANYONE would cheat on her)! The other friend has "discovered" punk, something his Vinnie Barbarino wanna-be friends just can't relate to! We are shown other highlights of this nitty-gritty summer, such as the famous black-out; the duel between the Studio 54 crowd and the burgeoning CBGB's punk cult; along with the popularity of Reggie Jackson. Oh, yes. And thrown into the mix, adding an ever-growing sense of fear throughout the neighborhood "gang" is our "lover's lane killer," Son of Sam, and plenty of point-blank bloody killings. All in all? A strangely upsetting film that leaves you feeling sort of unsettled, inside! Interesting, in it's own way, I suppose; especially if you grew up in that area, during that time period. Watch it and view for yourself!
