Rating: Summary: The movie is called "SUMMER of Sam"... get that? "SUMMER"! Review: This is not supposed to be ABOUT the Son of Sam, you morons. If it was, I think it would be titled "Son of Sam". Right, you morons? But no, it's called "Summer of Sam". You know why? Cuz it's about the SUMMER of SAM! The people that were affected by the killings. It all happened in the SUMMER... of Sam.Thank you. Freakin morons.
Rating: Summary: Well, could have been better Review: "Summer of Sam" could have been a nice study of the time period and how the killer affected the city of New York. I'll admit I was interested in all the parts that involved only the neighborhoods and large groups of people afraid of the killer, and the killer himself (that scene where the dog talks to him was...er...freaky to say the least). But the movie falls flat to deliver. For one, it is WAY to long! In fact, now that I think about it, most of Spike Lee's films drag themselves into unbearable lengths of time (except for "Malcolm X", which was nicely paced). Second, the movie pretty much forgets that Sam exists and gets boiled down into the thousands of subplots by its many, many unlikable characters and their ridiculous problems. I was hoping Sam would kill them all and that would be the end of the movie, but sadly that was not delivered. Oh well...
Rating: Summary: You may want to pass on this "joint"... Review: ...or any other of mr.Spike Lee's "joints". Granted, mr.Lee is a very very talented man, so talented in fact that even hearing the phrase "a Spike Lee joint" could drive me straight out of the room. But my local library caught me off guard on this one, yes the library near me has one coppy of this "movie" in stock (they must have been a little short on money to buy such other "amazing joints" such as "Do the right thing" or one of his other even lesser known movies) but the thing is I diden't even know this was a "joint" belonging to mr.Lee. Infact the first time I noticed it was directed by mr.Lee was about half way through the movie (a.k.a the most repetitive sequence of the same old re-hashed stereo types from, well, just about any of mr.Lee's movies) when the box became more interesting to me than the movie. If your expecting an amazing crime drama or anything that has to do with the son of sam case look elsewhere. This whole movie consists of drawn out stero types, repetitive vulgar language, and quite possibly the most irratating and unnecessary ammount of sexual content I've seen in a while. This movie is supose to tell the story of the 44. killer but instead its just a huge movie about a fiew friends and there gossip, oh and there was about 7 minutes of footage of the 44. killer thrown in there to tell the audience that this movie is infact suppose to be about the son of sam, not a group of friends. My advice? Watch Seven, its quite possibly the most amazing crime drama ever made, Period.
Rating: Summary: It should have been called "Summer of Sleep" Review: This movie is alright. It is way too long. A two and a half hour movie could have been made in under and hour and a half. The only good thing about this movie is the acting by both John Leguizamo and Adrien Brody, thankfully the stars of the film. Spike Lee makes a somewhat hilarious cameo as a news reporter. But other than a rockin' soundtrack and and a half naked, super hot Adrien Brody, this isn't worth a second viewing.
Rating: Summary: 1977 Sodom and Gomorrah Review: Oh my goodness. I cannot believe that people actually made that movie. I was blown away the entire time at how graphic and disgusting that it was, and it only got worse. I never thought that Spike Lee was the most moral person anyway, but I wouldn't have ever dreamed that he would do something like this. The only reason why I gave it two stars was because of the fine acting performances, and the somewhat interesting plot. It was too hard to notice whether the movie was good though because of all of the "trash" in it. This is certainly not a kid movie, nor is it even something that most adults would sit through. I would have turned it off, had I not been watching it in my college film class! This film must have had the F word three times in every sentence! According to the MPAA, its R rating reflects Strong violence and sexuality, pervasive strong language and drug use. They weren't exaggerating when they said that. The sexuality includes a full-flegged orgy scene and some other extremely uncomfortable sexuality. This was a very perverted and disgusting movie that is not worth 2 hours and 20 minutes of your precious time. If you just dig Spike Lee and you think that you have to see this anyway, remember that this is not your average Spike Lee Joint. If you do decide to watch this, be careful who you watch it with. Don't watch it with your mother.
Rating: Summary: One of the worst movies ever made! Review: I have never seen such a disgusting, hateful, poorly acted, piece of garbage as this. It should be called "dumb and dumber." If you want to spend two hours watching a bunch of low lifes acting like "dogs in heat" and watching SOS blow them away at point blank range, go ahead. However, if you want to combine 1970s with blood and gore, you will be much better off with Dirty Harry. This film should get an award: "The worst movie of the century!"
Rating: Summary: Boiling Hot 'Summer' Review: "The Son of Sam" was a disturbed. But, "The Summer of Sam" has nothing to do with that perturbed individual. It was about people in the Bronx during the summer of 1977, getting down to the rough dirties. I was appalled with the amount of graphic depiction of rough dirties performed everywhere imagined. There were many unnecessary moments in this movie, but only Reggie Jackson was the true hero. Spike Lee directed this character study during a time of paranoia and fear. This movie is not for children and if they watch this movie, they will have nightmares, so parents beware!
Rating: Summary: Spike Lee is not at his best Review: Roger Ebert liked it and gave it 3 1/5 stars. I thought it was boring. Positive side: very stylish, great soundtrack. Negative side: I watched it carefully but can only GUESS what it is (exactly) about. Highly recommended for Spike Lee's fans, not recommended for people looking for a very entertaining movie.
Rating: Summary: It went a little TOO over-the-top. Review: I really like gritty movies, but this movie just became grimy and digusting after a while. The thing w/ Adrian Brody working in some kind of bizarre gay strip club/S&M club was jut bizarre and sort of unnecissary. Good performances all around. Except for the other tough friends over did the being tough NEW YORKA thing. 1 being a New Yorker I don't talk that way and neither does anyone. It was shot better than any other one of Spike Lee's joints and I WORSHIP the montage w/ Baba O' Reilley, it's my favorite song and it shot really well and very very cool stuff. The movie just made me feel dirty. God love Ben Gazzara!
Rating: Summary: Excellent film, OUTSTANDING performances Review: I have seen Spike Lee's SUMMER OF SAM 3 times, and with each subsequent viewing my appreciation for this film builds .... There is so much in SUMMER OF SAM to absorb, from the truly amazing performances of Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo, to Spike Lee's multi-layered story, it is almost imperative that you see this film more than once ... In fact, after seeing it in it's inital release, I've rented it two times, and the reason I'm back here ... is to order a copy for my collection ... Spike Lee does a fantastic job directing this film above and beyond the single story of David Berkowitz ... In fact, the Son of Sam character takes a backseat ( no pun intended :) to the havoc he created, and the lives people lead seperate from these crimes .... The acting is brilliant all around, and I can't stress enough how convincing and passionate Sorvino and Leguizamo are in their roles ... No, this is not a "politically correct" film that all fits neatly together at the end ... This film may not "go down easy" as do so many other films ... The killings are graphic, the sex is grapic, and there is alot of great music ... All adding to the impact ...... The one thing I found slightly inaccurate was the implication that the important punk music explosion of 1977 somehow began in England ( an important sub-plot early on ), when in reality, NYC was the home of many a great punk band long before England caught on ... ( with the early 70's came the NY Dolls, the midwest's Iggy Pop and Dead Boys, and the Ramones, etc ) ... When it's all said and done, I would have no problem putting SUMMER OF SAM next to films such as DOG DAY AFTERNOON, PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, and TAXI DRIVER in my collection of great / gritty NYC flms ... Definitely Spike Lee's best ....
