Summary: Great Movie But DVD could have been Better
Review: I cannot understand why on the DVD version it is the edited television version and not the video which has 11 more minutes to it. Makes no sense at all, and I think it is a huge error. Futhermore the commentary is good but you wish the director would shut his mouth for a second so poor Lorna can speak! She is the one who was there and has stories.

Summary: Judy Davis ruins this film
Review: I do love this movie right up until the part where Judy Davis becomes Judy Garland. Tammy Blanchard on the other hand, IS Judy Garland. She looks like her too! She definitely is one of the greatest actors I've seen in a long time. But Judy Davis......couldn't they have at least TRIED to find someone that looked like Garland, and who was a little younger? I absolutely despise the way Davis moves her mouth when she is "singing". If you watch the real "Meet Me in St Louis", Judy Garland never does this while singing the Trolley Song. To put it more simpler, Judy Davis ruined this film for me.

Summary: Good, engrossing and dissappointing
Review: I enjoyed this truly engrossing account of Judy Garlands Life, written in a predominantly unbiased was by her daughter Lorna Luft. A "no-holds barred" approach, showing warts and all, and still making the whole increadible story unstoppable. HOWEVER I had a couple of issues watching this.... Firstly (as mentioned in another review) the video release cuts out many of the most poignant scenes shown in the TV version. This is nothing short of sad. My second critisim, and this is of both version, was the sense of "running out of time" towards the end. Emotionally charged and powerful scenes were no longer than a few fleeting seconds... this is a scripting fault, rather than a concept/directorial fault, I think. The effect is to dampen the emotions and meanings of these scenes. I found myself wanting more out of the movie, and found the retail version failing even more than the TV version to deliver. Truly diappointing.

Summary: am i missing something?
Review: i feel like i've seen a different show . the one i saw was an incredibly badly written run-of-the-mill tv bio pic that featured an ok impersonation by judy davis, but i felt she was more judy davis than judy garland (nobody does narrow-eyed cynicism better than judy davis, and i wonder if judy garland ever had such a mannerism). blanchard, however, is worthy of all the praise she's been given.but the script was so cliched, and i realise it was based on lorna luft's book, but thats no reason to go so heavy handed on the poor-teenage-lorna-but-she's-really-so-wise-and-grown-up direction at the end.

Summary: Judy Davis shines in this movie!!!
Review: I have seen several biography movies about Judy Garland, but this movie is by far the best one I have ever seen. Judy Davis gets JG's mannerism and speech down to a tee. I have been watching Judy Garland's mid 60's television series on dvd this winter, so I have a real point of reference. Believe me if you are a garland fan this is a must see.

Review: I liked the first hour of the movie. Tammy Blanchard did a terrific job as Judy. She sounded and looked exactly like her. And in my opinion, she could have portrayed Judy the whole time, with the right make-up of course. Judy Davis did an okay job. But I think Tammy did better.

Summary: Great Acting!
Review: I loved this movie and thought it had wonderful acting by the entire cast, especially Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard, who were highly deserving of the Emmys they won. I also thought the girl who plays Lorna as a teenager did an excellent job, she just broke my heart when she was crying. My husband isn't a big Judy Garland fan, but he watched with me and ended up loving this movie. I loved the Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis and Star is Born sections and when Judy Davis did Somewhere Over the Rainbow, it looked to me, just like the concert footage of Judy from the early 50's as I had just seen Judy, the Concert Years on dvd. I thought Tammy Blanchard was great as the younger Judy, especially when she did "I've Got Rhythm", and the Wizard of Oz scenes! I don't agree with some reviewers who said Judy Davis didn't have the same energy when she was acting out Judy's songs. Even though she was lip synching, I thought she did a great job with all of the songs, and when she did San Francisco, I felt like she really was Judy! I am a big Judy fan and thought they did an excellent job with this movie and highly recommend it!! Get this dvd and enjoy.

I thought there were times during the movie that she was more a charicature of Judy instead of portraying a real living person. She wasn't bad at all, I just think she is over-rated. She does have some very good moments though such as when she finds out her father had died and the scene with Lana Turner. True Judy Davis looks less like Garland than Tammy, but I think she seemed much more "Judy-Like". From what I have seen of Judy Garland interviews and read (I wrote a 20 page paper on her life), she seems to capture Garland's esscence well. Despite being a fan of Judy Davis's performance, I do agree with most that she should have been brought in later than for Meet Me In St. Louis. One person complained about the "jaw shaking" Judy is shown doing. This actually happens with some singers when singing correctly for effect. I don't know if Judy did though. I was more disturbed by Tammy Blanchard's complete head shaking when singing.

Summary: Movie was great BUT...I don't understand the video chops!
Review: I purchased, first the VHS tapes, then the DVD. The VHS had scenes that were not shown in the original broadcast, but the DVD has about 15 minutes missing from the VHS tape. Usually a DVD contains more "stuff" than a VHS tape, but not in this case
