Rating: Summary: Ain't no ocean, aint no sea, Keep my sister 'way from me.... Review: Let's see... I was in the 5th grade the first time I saw this movie. Just as a prievious poster mentioned, this movie affected me even at a young age. It's been one of my favorites ever since. My sister and I have seen it so many times, we know most of the dialogue by heart! This movie will make you laugh, cry, sing, and shake your fist at the screen. Whoopi Golberg was excellent!! Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey were not to be forgotten either. I loved "You tole Harpo to beat me...You better bash Mister's head in and think about Heaven later!"Even after all these years and dozens of times watching this movie, I still feel the emotion. Good job Speilberg!!!
Rating: Summary: DVD OK, movie excellent Review: I have not read the book, and thus only refer to the story as depicted in the movie. It is excellent, but I do criticize its sliding into a sentimental romanticizing of black American's African "roots". Some American Blacks who traveled to Africa to find resonance have reported success; others have discovered they were Americans, and not at all African. The movie depicts a Black family responding within to their African roots, even though they travel, work and live there as missionaries! In short, they are delivering a Western religion to a land that they celebrate for its non-Western ethos. Besides this single element, the story is timeless and touching. The acting is excellent - Goldberg especially! - as is the directing. The photography is very good. The DVD itself would have been perfect with a feature-length commentary with Walker and Spielberg. I recommend this movie unreservedly, with or without popcorn, but definitely with a box of hankies.
Rating: Summary: one of the all time greats Review: This movie will touch your heart. The acting talent is outstanding. Whoopi, Oprah, and Danny have never been better. I highly reccomend it to all women and most men.
Rating: Summary: This deserves more than 5 stars! Review: Oh my goodness!!! This is Whoopie and Oprah at their best. I love this movie. I cryed my little eyes out the first time I saw it. I still cry whenever I see it. But hay, it's still a great movie. I'm gonna buy this as soon as it comes out, which I think is soon. I advise you to do the same.
Rating: Summary: A real tear jerker Review: UNFORGETTABLE!! This movie defines the word. I was quite young, probably six or seven, when I first saw it, and despite what kind of movie it was (not the kind that usually interest's children) I still have vauge memories of begging my mom to rent this Everytime we went to the video store. It was ALLWAYS my choice when I was asked what movie to rent. It was able to touch me to my core, even as a child. It is truly the most touching movie you will ever see. The abuse she quietly suffers, her husbands MISTRESS actually loving her more than anybody else does (accept her sister whom she hasn't seen for years) That allways puzzled and awed me. Just see if you don't cry when the "dazzling singer" (the husbands mistress) sings a song written especcialy for and dedicated to Celie (abused,un loved for wife)at one of her PUBLIC preformances. This is a movie that will stand the test of time!!!! WATCH IT. That is, if you aren't a stone hearted person who has to have action every second and violence. (like the couple of brainless loosers who actually gave this movie a bad review.)WATCH IT!!! IT WILL HAUNT YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!!
Rating: Summary: High up on my top 10 favorites list!!! Review: This movie is NOT at all boring! I lOVE IT!!! The story, directing, casting and music is as good as they come. Steven Spielberg IS the master at movie making. This film will touch every emotion in you but will leave you in the end feeling VERY strong and good inside. I do agree that it needs to be a single sided DVD though. Everyone hates interuptions.
Rating: Summary: Powerful colourful and oh so memorable... Review: Cried shamelessly when first saw this film and have shed tears all the other 8 times since. A politically incorrect story of a black man abusing his wife over many years until one day she makes a stand, and he eventually does right by her. Not a popular theme at the time it was made, perhaps sadly the reason it failed to achieve even just one award in 1986.The academy is the poorer for that remiss.
Rating: Summary: "You told Harpo to Beat me"...... Review: I will be making this purchase when it becomes available...saw it in the movie theatre twice...and on television...will buy this for my home library....Thanks Mr. Speilberg...Oprah and Whoopi...Thanks
Rating: Summary: Great movie, Bad DVD Review: It burns me up that this DVD is two sided. Much longer movies such as Spartacus, 2001, and LA Confidental are all one sided. I would only recommend it if you don't mind the interruption. If you do mind as I do, get the VHS widescreen version. The movie is excellent but WB should have known better.
Rating: Summary: The Color Purple is one of my all time favorites! Review: It's one movie I will unfailingly watch every time it's on, and cry every time like the first time I saw it.
