Summary: An Underappreciated Work Of Genius
Review: There's a lot more going on here than meets the eye. The plot is intricate and meticulously structured. The climax is totally imagistic. Pretty gutsy for a Hollywood film. "The Ice Storm" will probably spawn a dozen more terrible imitations like "American Beauty."

Summary: BRILLIANT FILMAKING
Review: Great, depressing, well acted....I could go on. This film has to be seen. If you like good movies you'll love the Ice Storm. If your into Armageddon type crap then you'll want a refund. Me? I'm stickin with my Scorcese, Kubrick and Lee's. Great film. see it.

Summary: Icy goodness...
Review: Anyone who doesn't appreciate this film is a waste of human tissue. They should immediately donate their living organs (eyes, heart, liver, etc.) to the less fortunate, as they clearly are incapable of using them to enjoy this great accomplishment. Perhaps your eyes will better serve "Karin," a hypothetical 22 year old college student. She lost her sight when she was 16 in a home fireworks accident, but she still desperately wants a Masters degree in film. She struggles every day to make sense of her disfigurement. Give her your eyes, I say! Upon opening them I will play The Ice Storm for her. After being instantly revitalized by it's cinematic powers, Karin will go on to win 3 Best Director Oscars, 2 Best Original Screenplay Oscars, and receive 8 other various nominations.

You, on the other hand, can't even enjoy The Ice Storm. What a waste. If you're not going to enjoy the most wonderful of films for STUPID reasons (ex. you don't think the characters are "realistic..." ... uh, what the heck do you know, anyway?), you should at least fry up some bacon, and eat it.

Summary: Disturbing and thought-provoking
Review: You certainly need all your powers of concentration and emotional imagination to enjoy this movie. It is pretty relentless in its depiction of a group of New England adults and adolescents groping their way selfishly and blindly through the social changes of the early 1970s. It is an extremely good movie, however, and if it doesn't quite merit five stars that is because the viewer ends up feeling rather unsympathetic toward all the characters. By the way, when are key parties coming back into fashion?

Summary: Not a movie for everyone, but if its for you youll love it
Review: This film is not for everyone. Its dark and can be intense. Its hard to describe what its about, so ill just tell you what I thought of it. If your the type of person that just likes to watch movies and keep it simple without much thought required, this movie is not for you. But for those of you who like to analyze films and look into a films deeper meaning, this is an enjoyable film. It is a darker movie, and the directors use of colors is superb. You might expect the movie to be filled with dull drab colors, which alot of it is, but brighter colors are also used yet still to the same effect. The acting is terrific. Christina Ricci was superb in it, although my opinion is a bit prejudice since I am a big fan of her work. I also liked the touch of humor in the early stages of the movie, although some of it may not be funny to others. Much of it seems to be a bit on the strange side. And the humor also serves as a deeper meaning as well. So it may not have even been meant to be humorous, and for some odd reason I found it to be. All in all, I think this is an excellently made movie. If your looking for a meaningful movie this one is for you. Although if your the type of person that needs action and climax in every scene, then you might want to pass this one up.

Summary: Original, with a corucopia of new talent, mixed with the old
Review: I thought this movie had a pretty good depiction of the 3 major stages, that we as curious beings go through. Adolescence, Teen's, and Mid-Life; All are tied together through one common factor.... Sex. I was only disappointed to see that Katie Holmes did not have a bigger part in the film. -Joshua Jarvis

Summary: Depressing & Pointless
Review: This was one of those movies that was meant to be meaningful but ended up depressing, cynical, and incredibly boring. It wasn't that the acting itself was bad. And it wasn't that I wasn't prepared to like this movie, because I really hoped to enjoy it. It was just another depressing, dysfunctional family movie. Wow...like I need to see another one of those. Besides that it's dull and depressing, it's really very unrealistic. In real life, people smile and laugh. I'm guessing people generally smile at least once a day. And even if there are unhappy, mean, self-absorbed people like that, it's not like that's what life is like. And if life IS like that for you, than you need some serious help.

Summary: Icy
Review: Some fine performances lift a rather ordinary tale of disolving families set in the early seventies. there is a strong and sometimes too concious sense of period about the piece and together with some fairly horrible self obsessed characters, this all perhaps comes across as being a little bit too much of a scathing commentary of an era. There is, perhaps naturally enough, a coldness about the film and little sympathy is engendered for any of the protagonists. But there were some nice observations and shafts of humour and this was certainly one of the more enjoyable and interesting releases during 1998
