Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Movie! Review: I rented this one on a whim, and I'm glad that I did. This film is based on the true story of Veronica Franco, a Venetian courtesan who was first admired and then later put on trial for her ability to draw men to her. Her one true love is the dashing Marco (a very excellent Rufus Sewell) whom she could not marry because she was not rich enough. Her mother instead shows her another way to be with the man she loves, and Veronica's journey begins. This film is shot very well;you get the feel of the time and mindset of the people during this period drama. You also understand the limitations placed on women during this time period, and how sexuality was the only option open if a woman wanted to be educated. As Veronica, Catherine McCormack is a great actress, a woman who learns to use both her body and mind to have her way. She expresses great strength and dignity, even when she is accused of being a witch and brought to trial. I love the chemistry between Marco and Veronica;it's sexy without being sleazy. I watched this film several times before returning it to the video store, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most interesting films I have had the pleasure of viewing. See it at least once and judge for yourself.
Rating: Summary: A Historical Romance lush with Passion Review: A marvelous film that tells the tale of a beautiful Venitian woman (dangerous because of her intelligence as well as beauty) and her quest to fulfill the needs of her heart. We are immersed into a world of passionate and erotic love, but also are taken back in time to enchanting Venice. You will fall in love with this beautiful tale of romance and self-fulfillment. If you love historical romance, you will find this film enjoyable and unforgettable!
Rating: Summary: Dangerous Beauty? Magnificent Beauty if more like it! Review: An overall masterpiece. This is a movie about the 16th centuy life style of women in venice. In short women didn't have much say or freedom unless they were a "courtesan". Catherine McCormick who also played the spouse of Mel Gibson in the movie "Brave Heart" is the leading role. She does an amazing job of portraying the hardships, benefits, and pleasures of becoming a courtesan. This is a powerful movie that I would recommend to everyone but specially to men because there is much to be learned from it. It's an eye opener and will make you think twice before calling some one a whore and what that word really means. After I finished watching the dvd in english I watched it in French. My God what a difference. Besides the fact that I couldn't understand a word they were saying, the movie sounds much more passionate and evoked more emotions then the English version( and yes I did have the english subtitle on). The ladies are bound to become very emotional watching the french version and the guys oh well I'll skip that part. This is one movie that you won't watch just once and is sure to entertain you and your friends for years to come, unless you go out to venice and see the real modern courtesans for your self :)
Rating: Summary: Not Just a Chick Flick! Review: I originally saw this movie in Paris under the title "The Courtesan". The scenery and the costuming are absolutely breath taking, and I thought Catherine McCormick did a wonderful job in the role of Veronica Franco. This movie does an incredible job of showing just how few opportunities there were for women in this time period and the only options available should a woman want an education of any kind. I do not know yet how accurate this true story is in portraying the life of Veronica Franco, but seeing this movie made me interested enough to purchase and begin to read the book upon which it is based (The Honest Courtesan). This movie is definitely worth the purchase.......
Rating: Summary: My absolute favorite movie Review: I lent it to my neighbor and the next day she told me she had stayed up until two in the morning watching it over and over. Only a pessimistic, unromantic fool would underrate this film.
Rating: Summary: The most beautiful romance I've ever watched. Review: I can't usually sit through a movie more than once, but I've seen this film countless times. To me it's just incredibly well-made and most importantly, it captures my attention. I practically bound and gagged my husband to make him see it, and he thought it was so good that he cried! Don't miss this movie.
Rating: Summary: beautiful, wonderful Review: if you love films like thornbirds, romeo and juliet, you will guaranteed love this one as well. mccormac and sewell are magic together and that is why it is so difficult to let go of this film.i searched everywhere for information about this film but did not succeded until now. the beauty of this picture is amazing and not to mention the music. after seeing "a destiny of her own" i cannot compare it with anyone else. it will always be my favorite no.uno.
Rating: Summary: a beautiful and provocative film Review: This exquisitie film chronicles the life of poetess and early feminist Veronica Franco, The Honest Courtesan detailed in the scholarly book of the same name. The lush musical score underscores the the lavish visual details of 16th century Venice and keys the history of this courageous woman who balanced a life of physical and intellectual survival. Although romanticized, it is a successful and enthralling glimpse into the struggles of a very special lady in a very difficult time. A pleasure to watch and a tempting beginning to a more serious study of the life of women in Venice at that time. Very Worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: An essential addition to anyone's collection! Review: This movie was first released here in Manila (and elsewhere in Asia I think) as "A Destiny of Her Own" which is I believe far more imaginative than "Dangerous Beauty". Still, my girlfriend practically had to drag me to see this at first ( I'm really an action/adventure and horror/scifi buff), but to my surprise I actually loved it! This is a truly heartwarming film which inspires using the time-tested theme of going against rigid and oftentimes hypocritical class-and religion- related norms set against a breathtaking backdrop of Renaissance-era Venice. Catherine McCormack's (whom I first fell in love with after seeing her in her all-too brief and tragic role in "Braveheart") performance was superb and it is indeed unfortunate that too few people will ever get to see her in this role. Don't think - just get this essential (and in all likelihood enduring) DVD and I promise you won't regret it!
