Summary: The Perfect PIANO Piece
Review: One of the best movies I have ever seen is Jane Campion's The Piano. Holly Hunter plays a mute mail-to-order bride who, along with her daughter(played by young Anna Paquin), travels to New Zealand to meet her new husband Stewart, played by Sam Neill. Her one love is her Piano, but she must leave it behind, for it was to heavy to get to her new house. Later Stewart trades the piano for some land to a man nearby Baines, played by Harvey Keitel. Ada is to give him lessons. At first she detests the idea, as she has everything since she moves to the island. But Baines makes her an offer that she can't refuse; she can get her beloved piano back. It is then that we watch Ada's soul awaken as she spends time with Baines. Her daughter Flora is like her best friend, but Flora will innocently betray her mother, which will lead to a dramatic climax.
Even though Holly Hunter few lines are voice-overs, this is her finest performance ever, winning her the Best Actress Oscar for 1993. Anna Paquin also takes an Oscar for Best Suporting Actress. The film also won an Oscar for Jane Campion's screen play, and was nominated for Best Picture of the year as well as several others. Sam Neill and Harvey Keitel were equally impressive for their roles as well. Michael Nyman's music is beautiful with its lovely saxophone melodies and a piano theme song that Hunter actually plays.
It is perfect in many ways and is a movie that should be in everyones well-rounded and complete video library. It is one of those movies that you will want to watch at night all snug in your bed with some popcorn. If your thinking of buying this movie; do. It is just that good. A+++

Summary: Beautiful and Otherworldly---A True Masterpiece
Review: The Piano is truly a hypnotic film. It takes you away to a bleak, desolate New Zealand island where Ada McGrath, a shy woman who stopped speaking at the age of six is getting off a boat to meet her soon-to-be husband Stewart, arranged by her father, with her daughter Flora. Ada communicates through Flora, who can talk. Ada uses her old family piano as a way to express her feelings, and she needs it to remain calm and stable. The men could not get the piano up to Stewart's house, which frustated Ada immensly. Stewart's neighbor George Baines then brings it to his house after much of Ada's pleading and lets Ada play it in exchange for sexual favors.
This is an extremely intriguing, beautiful, unique romantic drama that all interested in film should definitely check out. It is one of my all time favorite movies.

The Piano
Directed by Jane Campion
Starring Holly Hunter, Ann Paquin, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neill
Rated R for moments of extremely graphic sexuality

Summary: Ridiculous premise
Review: A deaf woman falls in love with a piano tuner who lives in the jungle. He teaches her to play piano by making love to her on the piano. Why does she live in the jungle, and how on earth do you contact a piano tuner who also happens to live in the jungle?!? I can see how it's an empowering film because she overcomes her hearing challenges much like Beethoven had to, but there are just way too many unrealistic plot elements in this movie to make it at all enjoyable.

Summary: Must see it again !
Review: This is a wonderful movie. I really enjoyed watching it and I thought that the silence added more character and made the film even more interesting and emotional. The scenes in this movie are very well put together and I thought that their organization helped me understand the film better. The ending of the movie is wonderful.

Summary: You'll either love it or hate it
Review: I have watched this movie at least a half dozen times since it's release and I am not tired of it yet. I am not an art house movie fan, but this one will either grab you by the throat and mesmerize you or it will totally turn you off. It is that strong a movie that there are no neutral reactions. My husband, who normally sleeps through my movies (even Schindler's List for God's sake!) could not sleep through this one. I have force fed it to a number of friends and the reaction is either gut-wrenching identifucation with the characters, or turning away in anger or disgust. By all means see it and judge for yourself, but don't plan on on easy movie experience. It is allegorical, romantic and harsh and beautiful and lovely to listen to and Holly Hunter considers it some of her best work. So do I.

Summary: This is supposed to be art?
Review: Harvey Keitel has a habit of always playing a perverse and unlikeable character, and he scores again. Holly Hunter is a sympathetic character, here, and her performance is a powerful one in the face of Keitel, who emits darkness and foreboding. A truly disturbing movie.

Summary: Piano perfect....
Review: I saw this movie back when it was in theaters and recently bought the dvd. This is a great story, centering around Ada, a woman that is mute and her daughter played by the talented Anna Paquin (now an X Men heroine). Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin won Oscars for their roles and Harvey Keitel gives a performance that is Oscar worthy as well. The music, the scenery and the acting all blend together perfectly making a movie that is appealing to all your senses. A very good film and well worth adding to your collection.

Summary: I don't get it!!!
Review: I don't see how anyone could say this movie was original. Don't get me wrong, I loved it but it is Cinderella 100%

Summary: Hunter and Keitel make music together
Review: Holly Hunter is a mute who loves her piano. She takes it and her daughter to primitive New Zealand to marry a man she has not met (Sam Neill). The piano is too heavy to carry to their home, so earthy Harvey Keitel keeps it at his house; he will return one key at a time in exchange for favors from her. She gradually falls for him while having no interest at all in the gorgeous Neill.

The movie is surprisingly erotic, and Keitel's character is very appealing, in spite of the face tatoos. Neill plays the abandoned husband with just the right mix of confusion and fury. Hunter's portrayal left me wondering what the men saw in her at all. Another lasting impression of this movie is of mud; there is so much of it, I am very glad I have running water.
