Summary: Great movie, poor DVD transfer
Review: This is an excellent, haunting film, but unfortunately the DVD transfer is poor; there is a lot of black in the movie, and just about all of it exhibits MPEG artifacts to a distracting extent.

Summary: Simply one of the best films I've ever seen
Review: I have seen the piano at least five times, I stopped counting after that. In the theater, watching for the first time when I was much younger, I was bowled over. Not only because I play piano, not only because I am a feminist, not only because I read romance novels, not only because I am a Holly Hunter fan, and not only because Harvel Keitel shows it all. This film touched both as an artist and as an individual, in that is tells a story about a woman in a situation she cannot control, in a place completely foreign to her, where no one has sympathy or feeling save one person. Her lifeline, her art has been taken away. She expresses herself only through that one passion, and suddenly realizes she is a person, not a thing and makes a conscious decision to start the affair. Those who say this plot is not believable have obviously never been in a position of utter loneliness.

--I could go on and on. As a visual artist, I am bowled over by Jane Campion's accomplishment on film.

Summary: An enchanting film
Review: As a pianist, I was completely seduced by this movie. Jane Campion has managed to capture all the passion and emotion of playing the piano, and its role as a voice. The raw beauty and brilliance of the actors made me weep. I felt tremendous recognition with the way Hunter brilliantly acts the role, - a girl who can only ever let her emotions out through her connection with the keys of an instrument.

Summary: wow
Review: Such a passionated film, after watching it for four times, I still feel there is more to know about this story. The four characters approach differently towards falling in love and loyalty. I viewed the piano as Ada's old lover, and she had been trapped into this old relationship for a long long time. By knowing Baines, she was able to fall in love again, and finally, her old emotions and passions just sunk with the piano into the deep ocean.

Summary: Pretentious
Review: Hated this movie. Almost from the beginning I was hoping the little girl would meet some horrible end. I wonder how people expressing love for this film are just caught up in its pretentious artistry.

Summary: Haunting
Review: This movie has such an eerie and haunting visual style that it is scary. Great direction by Jane Campion, who found and stuck by a "look". Holly Hunter could not have been better, and Anna Paquin matched her with sprite.

Summary: An amazing, stunningly beautiful film
Review: Great cineamtography, script, directing, and performances make "The Piano" an amazing, stunningly beautiful film. Holly Hunter is the heart and soul of this film, giving the best performance of her career. Anna Paquin is even better, stealing even the most heart-wrenching scenes. She deserved her Oscar, and has a great future ahead of her.

Summary: A depressing movie
Review: The beginning of the movie is touching and poetic--piano is the way for Ada to express her feelings. But the poetic feeling is ruined in the end for Ada's passion for piano seems lessoned or replaced by the earthly love. As a musician, I wouldn't know how to survive if I couldn't play the instrument as I wish any more. The writer for the movie intentionally made the story horrifying and brutal to the point of irritation. But Ada's daughtor, who possesses a special personality and living in her own mystical world, leaves me an unforgetable impression.

Summary: This film left me absolutely speechless.....
Review: The content of this film has neither been accomplished so beautifully nor will it ever be! If I could offer 10 stars, I would! Ms. Hunter's and Mr. Keitel's characters are unique at the very least! The pairing of them together worked despite the unlikeliness. The uniqueness of some of the scenes definitely stand out in my mind even to this day. Hauntingly wonderful would best describe how it left me feeling. This film is already a Classic in my mind. If you want to be transported away from the bland offerings available, then I would highly recommend this as a "must see" Film. Enjoy and savour the scenes!-A. Wilson, S. Calif.

Summary: Yep, the scenery's *exactly* as portrayed, so. . .
Review: pack up your bags and check us out--the birds, the beaches, the beeches, the mud--it's all real.

I wouldn't dare make a critical judgement on the story line--it's preposterous, but plausible. (To this day I don't believe Anna Paquin, herself, has seen the whole film.)
