Summary: Jane Austin at its best
Review: The British somehow are just a touch better at historical drama than Hollywood and this is another demonstration of that. It stays true to the book but is at the same time entertaining, engaging and lovely. It is a lovingly done adaptation that doesn't barter celebrity for entertainment value. The lead characters aren't perfect beauties or People's sexiest men, but have a better, real-life sexiness and attractiveness that gives the story more honesty. A must for any Austen or historical drama fan.

Review: If you have Pride and Predjudice, Sense and Sensibilty, etc you must have this one for your video collection! This is a wonderful timeless story that I have enjoyed watching numerous times. I have just about all the Jane Auston video's and this is an excellent quick fix (if you don't have six hours to spare).

Summary: The Best of Jane Austen in Persuasion
Review: This BBC/Masterpiece Theatre production faithfully presents Jane Austen's last complete novel. A tale of hypocrisy, family duty, faith, and lost love, the film features Amanda Root as Anne Elliott, our oft put-upon herione. Dismissed by her family, Anne is the glue holding them together and fixing their problems. Will she get a chance to reclaim her own happiness? Beautifully shot on location in England (most notably in Lyme Regis and Bath), the costumes and scenery are almost another character yet they enhance not overwhelm the story. I highly recommend this film.

Summary: Beautiful & Frustrating
Review: The glorious interiors, period dress that didn't look like costumes, and the haughty denizens of this thankfully vanished world are delightful. Very entertaining, but...We had difficulty understanding the dialog against the chattering of birds, background music, clopping of horses, and whatever else was happening in the background. I'm thinking that the DVD with English sub-titles is the way to go if you haven't memorized the book. The plot development seemed to periodically jump over whole chapters. I suspect that the original TV version production was chopped to fit into the 104-minute tape version.

Review: This is the movie I watch when I'm having a bad day. It starts off rather melancholy and sad, but ends happily. The rediscovered love between Anne and Captain Wentworth never fails to cheer me up.

Summary: Wonderful movie...
Review: This is one of those "once in a lifetime films" for me. I adored the book and now I own and dearly love the movie. Amanda Root is perfect as Miss Ann Elliot. In fact, I can't think of another actress that could play her. Her longing for Captain Wentworth is almost palpable. She appears to bloom when she gets to Bath and by the end of the film she radiates. Anyone with a real love of Jane Austen will adore this film. It follows the book very well (why do so many screen writers "adapt" Austen's novels anyway?) I highly recommend this film!

Summary: My favourite adaptation of the novel
Review: I really liked this film and couldn't help watching it over and over again. Hinds' depiction of Captain Wentworth had so much eviction and passion - he was extraordinary and Amanda Root - however not my favourite for the part, enacted it remarkably well. The chemistry between the two were amazing. This was aided greatly by Roger Michell's camera angles and lighting effects - he generously captured all the correct emotions that Austen expressed in her novel with such subtlety & perfection. I also particularly enjoyed the character portrayals of Lady Russell, Mrs Croft, Captain Harville and Elizabeth...Mary was a bit over the top but still satisfactory. However, as `Persuasion' is one of favourite Austen novels, I was immensely disappointed by the fact that vital dialogues were inadmissably overlooked, especially in the final scenes - you just cannot change the ending. Apart from this, this version is excellent & is far superior to the older BBC version which lacked the romance & passion that makes the novel such piece of mastery.

Review: Despite the much disputed public kiss at the end, I think that this production reflects the attitude and tone of Austen's novel beautifully. I was quite impressed by how faithfully the production followed the story itself as well as the themes and attitudes, but in any case this is a wonderful and entertaining film.

Review: if you want a good romance, this is it. i love the way when he comes back, and tries to win her back. you can tell that he still cares, by the way he watching her every move. this a great movie,watch it you will love it to.

Summary: Best adaptation of this novel
Review: This beautiful movie is mostly faithful to the book but - horribly! - changes the ending (which did not need changing in my opinion!). Anyway, it is a quiet version, with less dialogue and more visuals to show what is going on. The woman who plays her sister Mary is such a brilliant comic actress! She played her character as so annoying I just couldn't stand her! And Amanda Root transforms just as I imagined she would in the book. I much prefer this one to the older BBC version, which has too much dialogue and Anne posing all over the place. Oh - and the actor who plays the pathetic father is BRILLIANT. The soundtrack and the scenery are magical. I just want to get on a plane and go to Lyme this instant!
