Summary: A wonderful film for all adults
Review: Even if you're the type of viewer who doesn't like subtitles, give il Postino a chance. The characters are seeking to discover the meaning of their lives. By the end of the film you will be pondering the meaning of your own. This movie is superior to almost every other. If you enjoy it you should also try to find a copy of the American film, Trip to Bountiful which covers some of the same themes and is also very well done.

Summary: the end of a wonderful career
Review: apart from being a wonderful movie, Il Postino should bring other Massimo Troisi movies: one example is Non Ci Resta Che Piangere. in which he teamed up with Roberto Benigni in a travel through time, back to the Leonardo Da Vinci era. A true gem, hopefully someone will print it with english subtitles someday!

Summary: To Be Savored Again and Again
Review: If you don't understand or appreciate poetry, you may never appreciate this film. The Neruda poem shown at the end of the movie summarizes Mario's experience in discovering poetry. He learns to truly live by opening his eyes and ears to the life around him. The performances are subtle and textured the way a good poem should be. I have read the reviews here that call this film fare for pseudo-intellectuals. I don't agree. This movie is for all of those whose senses have been sharpened fine enough to perceive even the most minute occurrences of life. This movie shows you that there is real, bubbling, pulsating life in the wind, in the sea, everywhere, and that poetry helps you capture that life an re-release it in words. No, it's not a film for everyone, I guess . . .

Summary: A beautiful escape into simplicity and a love for life!
Review: A simply refreshing film, Il Postino will always remain one of my favorites. It is a simple expression of life played out in front of a backdrop of incredible scenery, a story of love, and a love for words. You will laugh. You will cry. You will want to watch it over and over again!

Summary: The only one I've seen 3 times and want to see again!
Review: Massimo is the best; he had to be in order to portray the naive but intelligent Mario via subtitles. This true to life plot shows the unfortunate but often the only way to improve one's life.

Summary: Awe Inspiring
Review: The beauty of this film is both its simplicity and its rich tapestry of narrative that runs throughout. Sure, it hasnt the character development many others films posess, and it can seem a little too simple at times. But its sheers brilliance comes from the fact that these points are intentional. Massimo Troisi gives one of the best screen roles in recent years. Of course, he was never going to win the Oscar ubt he should of. The script is pue poetry, the scenery is gorgeous. If you love poetry, you'll love this film. At its centre is a tale of romance and love which will touch the soul. Believe the hype! this film is a small tale shaped almost as a poem. With a tragic ending, it reminds one of the power and emotion someone like Massimo Troisi can bring to an on screen character.

Summary: You will be disappointed if you listened to the hype
Review: This is a pleasant, easy-paced small film. One attempts to identify with young Mario, but the character fails to develop, except as a kind of political hero for Italian communists. The Pablo Neruda character wasn't developed at all. There was very little plot (no, I wasn't looking for "car-chases" or violence or sex). If you are tired when you begin watching, you might fall asleep. It was engaging enough to keep my attention, but I was well-rested. The best part of the film was the English translation of the Pablo Neruda poem shown at the end. I am glad to have seen Il Postino because (1) it was a pleasant way to spend a boring Saturday afternoon, and (2) I learned of the beautiful, haunting poetry of Neruda. In short, it was nice, but over-hyped by Miramax. And it became a sort of "must-see" for self-styled intellectuals and the otherwise pretentious.

Summary: Simple, Heartfelt and damn entertaining.......
Review: This film is pure poetry in itself. Massimo Troisi is unforgettably good as Mario Ruopollo, a simple minded yet ambitious postman who falls for the village beauty (Maria Grazi Cucinotta). However, in order to win her love and find some sort of escape from the mundane life he believes the island holds, Mario enlists the help of exiled Chilian poet Pablo Neruda (Phillipe Noiret). This film remains in my heart for various reasons, none more poignant than the mere fact thats its storytelling at its very best. Profound, moving and thoughprovoking. Il Postino is one film that makes you believe once again in the power and magic of Cinema.

Summary: An Original Classic
Review: It's simply not Holywood type of crap. If you think "La Vita a Bella" is 10 times better than "Shakespeare in Love" you will definitely love this movie. Great music, great location. It's truly a classic.
