Rating: Summary: One of the GREATEST movies of all time! Review: I first saw this movie as a young man and it had a PROFOUND impact on my life. In fact, watching this movie was one of the most pivotal experiences of my life. I have watched this movie 100 times since. Yes it was filmed in the 70's and so therefore it has a 70's feel. If you are automatically prejudiced against anything that feels "hippyish" then you will not like this movie. But if you believe that even a movie with a hippie feel can say something powerful and transformational then this movie is for you. This movie is one of the GREATEST movies of all time and certainly the GREATEST spiritual movie I have ever seen.
Rating: Summary: WOW! It's great to see this film back after 30 years Review: I saw this film on my first ever date 30 years ago (yes I am that old...) and thoroughly enjoyed it then, even if the exact historical details are open to question, as experts like my Franciscan colleague Mike Robson remind us. But this is a great film, beautifully filmed and acted and it was a joy to watch all those 30 years ago in 1973. Now that it is back in video, enjoy it and enable a whole new generation of cinema goers (and teenagers on their first date....) to enjoy this great film.
Rating: Summary: Old Time Favourite! Review: Franco Zeffirelli's wonderful movie about the life of St. Francis and Saint Claire. Donovan made the music to Saint Francis prayers and is all filmed in Assissi. I can watch it over and over again.
Rating: Summary: I love this movie. Review: I don't know about the history, but I know a great film when I see it. If you're caught up in the nastiness and greed of the world and need something to carry you away and see life's meaning clearly again, this is the movie for you. And I'm not even a Catholic! I first saw this film back in 1971 when I was a college student. I watched it twice, tears streaming down my face the entire time. It still has that effect on me. It's simply beautiful. The music is half of what makes this movie wonderful. Donovan was a hippie, yeah, but the music here is a masteful combination of delicacy and simplicity. I sing it for days after I rewatch the film -- which I do about once every two or three years, when the world gets me down.
Rating: Summary: A simple and inspiring film Review: I felt a bit sorry about the Amazon review regarding this film. Although I'm a Buddhist I think this is a film that should be watched at least once a year where in a very simple way it gives us a message to be kind with each other and develop a contentment with life so that one can find a happiness that cannot be found with material things. St. Francis was one of the greatest men that have walked in this planet and among others (Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Gandhi, Mother Teresa etc.) he helped us trying to see our lives in a different way and this is very well seen in the film.
Rating: Summary: Francis and Clare, the early years. Review: I watch this video at least twice a year. Once in October near the feast of St. Francis. The film does a very good job of presenting the early years of the Fraciscan orders. It even makes reference to the begining of the Third Order (Secular Franciscans). The scenery and the gentle love between Francis and Clare in the film are attempts at showing Francis's passion for creation. The hard realities are also presented, that is the institutional church finding visionaries such as Francis a challenge. The presentation of Francis in his father's factory puts the focus on the social justice Francis stood for (Francis beyond the bird bath). There are many good biographies on Francis. This film is great for introducing those who do not know of Francis (and Clare) some of what he stood for and the gifts he left us with. Peace and all good Dianne, TSSF (Third Order Society of St. Francis)
Rating: Summary: my favorite movie ever! Review: This is a wonderful movie!! Graham Faulkner was PERFECT in the part of St. Francis and truly expressed both the joy and singlemindedness of purpose that Francis experienced. I love when he climbed on the rooftop to hold a bird!!He gave so much insight into the spiritual revelations of St. Francis! And Judy Bowker did a wonderful job of expressing both the piety and innocence of Clare! The songs by Donovan give a depth and fullness to the movie-don't miss this one!!
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: This is a great portrayal of Francis of Assissi as the reformer he was, with a fantastic soundtrack by Donovan. It shows how very close this Catholic saint came to being classed a heretic along with Hus, Wycliffe and other reformers. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: What a film! Review: I have always admired Saint Francis of Assisi but since seeing this video, I TRULY admire him...The actor who portrayed him deserved an Oscar....He really understood the depth of his character. He was a three dimensional character....and this young actor really achieved this ...I would recommend this video to anyone willing to see Saint Francis as a great man....Catholic or non Catholic..... Truly am glad I purchased it...
Rating: Summary: tom keogh is damn right: it's a bore...! Review: zeffirelli is a technically talented but very pretentious italian filmaker with a good lack of ideas. i do agree with tom keogh about anything he says about this film, including the attemp of turning Saint Francis into some flower power leader. this film is honey-dropping, with a unprecise historical view on the life of the saint, above all as regards his attitudes before his enlightment. some scenes with that flute sweeeet soundtrack look really oily....
