Rating: Summary: Good but not brilliant as such Review: I lkied the film a great deal and it deals with the emotional side of Lewis's life at that time fairly well, but there are two things that I dislike about it, the first is Hopkins portrayal of Lewis, which is not much like the man at all, apart from the combative stance in his relish of debates. The second is the accuracy of the film, like many 'true stories' fact and fiction are intertwined, however the emotional accuracy compansates that and it works slightly well in some respects as an introduction to CS Lewis
Rating: Summary: *YAWN* Review: This is the most boring film I have ever seen. The soundquality is terrible and Anthony Hopkins can not act at all. Unless you want to waste time watching one of the stupidest movies of all time, I suggest you don't watch much less buy this...
Rating: Summary: I bought it for my wife. Really. I'm serious. Review: Anthony Hopkins does an amazing job portraying the story of C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham, and how waiting on love is the most foolish of self denials.I bought this DVD for my wife. The transfer is pretty good, and the sound is well done. The camera work really showcases the scenery well, and picks up on the ambiance the directer wanted. And, after all that drivel, I must admit, I just *LIKED* it. I don't like this kind of film, but it was **GOOD**. Don't tell my wife.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarmingly Perfect! Review: As an Anthony Hopkins fan, I knew I would love this from the beginning. With this movie, I have proved myself to be right. The actors are superb and bring the characters to true form. It is a very beautiful story of what can happen when someone really falls in love. I thought it was better than most sappy love stories where you can tell from the very beginning where the relationship is going to be by the end of the movie. With a story so passionate and powerful, this movie transcends the simplistic nature of a "happily ever after" fairy tale. This movie causes you to appreciate those people who mean a lot to you. This movie deserves more than 5 stars and there aren't enough words to describe the emotional value of this film.
Rating: Summary: This film will enrich your life. Review: Very few movies have impacted me as this lovely film has. It is a work filled with beauty, honesty, nobility, and reality. Hopkins and Winger are perfectly cast and turn in flawless performances that you will never forget. I cannot overstate the wonderful and powerful chemistry that develops between their characters, nor can I overstate how delightful are the subtleties and nuances that abound in their discovery of each other. And the performances turned in by the rest of the cast are all solid and fit like a good glove. There just are no holes in this movie - it is excellent from the opening credits and never diminishes a whit. Even if your heart is as cold and hard as an Arctic ice floe, I doubt you will be able to watch this and not be moved. Build a fire, take the phone off the hook, dim the lights, and prepare to spend two fabulous hours sharing a magnificent story with those you most care for. If you fall in love with this elegant portrayal as much as I have, you will watch it again and again through the years and always come away feeling enriched and satisfied. What I wouldn't give to see Hollywood would turn out more movies of this caliber!
Rating: Summary: Powerful, Intelligent, and Joyous Review: I probably watch this film every two years, yet like fine wine, it grows even better after time. This picture is a beautiful, thought provoking, and highly effective meditation on how love, death, god, joy, and pain all coexist in the strange universe that is life. With subject matter as complex as this, the viewer can see where one could easily become lost in C.S. Lewis's story, but "Shadowlands" never falters. The film remains quiet, simple, and highly effective through Attenborough's understated direction, and its cast's uniformly excellent performances. However, what sits at the very core of "Shadowlands" beauty is its ultimate truth. There are moments in this film so full of genuine, unflynching emotion that its power practically hits the audience member in the gut. Yes, the film's magnificently depicted scenes of death and grieving never fail to jerk tears from my eyes, but Lewis's closing lines regarding the choices he made as a boy and a man make me sob. "Shadowlands" is undoubtedly representative of filmaking at its very best. I recommend this film without reservation to anyone!
Rating: Summary: I can't decide. . . Review: which Shadowlands to recommend. The earlier film with Ackland was very well done, with perhaps a better script. But Hopkins and Winger are stunning in this new version. I would recommend EITHER. . or BOTH. . . to any film fan, Lewis fan, or someone looking for a deep and moving story. 4 and a half stars for sure!
Rating: Summary: Sharon H of Alabama Review: This story could be just another tear-jerker,but,it's not. This is the story of how ,at what ever stage in your life,it's not too late to find the love of your life(with a little help from God). Lewis had book knowledge of love, but until he experienced it for himself, all his words were just empty, flowery, words. He could now empathise will all who has ever found there soul mate. God was gracious to give him the opportunity to find and have that great love.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent C.S. Lewis Film! Review: I think this film did a very good job capturing what C.S. Lewis' "jolting" mid-life romance was all about. I think one of the interesting points in this film (and maybe a little humorous as well) is that a proper and respectable Professor at Oxford University is swayed by God's gift of love into a passion that he had never experienced before. He had shut himself out from the rest of the world, which including feelings of love, both happy and sad. Much to the dismay of his friends (I suppose The Inklings were still around then, although I saw no sign of J.R.R. Tolkien, or his son C. Tolkien throughout the whole film.) The philosophy of many Oxford Professors back then was that where males have intellect, women have soul, and thus very few of them ever opened up their hearts to a women. It looks like old Jack wasn't as strongly ground into his reasoning as he thought, eh? Anyway, the film is very good, and while I don't profess to be an emotional person, some scenes got right down into the pit of my soul.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Weepy Movie-Have A Jumbo Kleenex Box Nearby! Review: As it says above, this movie is best viewed with kleenex. Debra Winger as Joy Gresham gets right to the very soul of C.S. Lewis (played by Anthony Hopkins) almost without his realizing it. The chemistry between them is mesmerizing! I also recommend the novel by Leonore Fleischer.
