Rating: Summary: makes stink smell good Review: I got a dvdr 985 fitst. It worked ok for about six months and then it started showing disc error I was sent firm ware soft ware it did nothing. I sent it in two times for repair and it came back no different than when I sent it and finally they replaced it with a DVDR 75 and after six or eight months it started freezing up and shutting down completely. Now it won't even play a DVD. I called customer support several times but got little more than arguments. Then after trying resolve the problem the warranty ran out and they were going to try to charge for the calls. No more Philips products for me! Not only is DVDR worthless their service is worse
Rating: Summary: Use correct Blank Disc!!!! Review: I have read reviews of this product that said it was horrible and others that said great. I purchaced mine about 3 months ago and hooked it all up to my Direct TV Receiver with TIVO recently. The machine operates just as advertised WHEN THE CORRECT BLANK DISC IS USED. I have found that ONLY the DVD+RW4.7GB/120minute disc works trouble free. I have had total sucess using this machine to act as a "VCR" with a good picture even at the 4 hour record setting that has always played back on any DVD player I have tired---3 different brands. I have not tried to record a DVD movie onto a blank disc yet and fear there would be problems doing that. However, anyone with a TIVO realizes that if there are certain shows you copy on a regular basis, the TIVO gets full quickly. The Phillips allows me to review what I have recorded and also what I have not had time to watch on my TIVO, then "clean-up" space on the TIVO by transfering to the Discs on the Phillips. Two normal size movies from Direct TV fit well on one Disc at the M3 or M4 record speed with a good quality playback. Then, the RW Dics allow you to save the movie/show or erase and record something else. Very much an advance over the VCRs of the past for sure. A special hook-up for Cam recorders is included so I suspect it works well for home movies too. Just don't expect wonders while trying to copy a store bought DVD movie on this machine.
