Summary: "I always wanted to be a gangster"
Review: Goodfellas is martin scorseses blunt look at the unscruplous life of Henry Hill, who dreamed of being a gangster growing up in his low life neighborhood. The film chronicles his "rags to riches" life that ends when he is forced to rat on his friends and enter a witness protection program. The film has a much harder edge to it than The Godfather; containing vibrant but grotesque characters that deserve little sympathy. The fast kinetic editing and period music add immensely to the overall effect of goodfellas. Not since Coppola has a director been able to absorb so many elements into a gangster flic but make it a creation entirely his own. Certainly one of the more violent mob movies made, it justifies every action made on screen. There are no filler scenes or excess blood to please the viewer. By the end, one has an understanding of all aspects of "the life" including that of the wives as well. With the exception of one scene, there are not too many surprises in Goodfellas, which speaks volumes about its power. It is able to keep the viewer hooked for 2 and a half hours moving from point A (Henry's childhood) to point B ( His exit from "the life"). Ray Liotta does a remarkable job in the lead role, but the supporting cast is brilliant. Pesci, DeNiro, Paul Sorvino, Loraine Bracco, and the rest of the "crew" make perfect caricatures out of the cliche gangster mentality.

Review: ALTHOUGH THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE DOESN'T REALLY MATCH THE VERY CORE OF THE MOVIE, GOODFELLAS IS AN AMAZING GRIPPING STORY WHICH GRABS THE ATTENTION OF THE VIEWER FROM THE VERY OPENING SCENCE,WITH OSCAR WINNNG PERFORMANCE BY JOE PESCI THE GOODFELLAS TAKES YOU THE VERY PRIVATE LIVES OF SMALL TIMES HOODLUMS. A MUST BUY FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKED CASINO, DONNIE BRASCO, GODFATHER AND PULP FICTION

Summary: Scorcese's Masterpiece
Review: Martin Scorcese has directed many cinematic masterpieces, with Goodfellas being the best in his storied career. Based on true story of mobster turned snitch, Henry Hill, the movie moves from Henry's teenage years as a fledgling to his rise in ranks to his ultimate downfall. Shot at a frenetic pace and mixing violence and a weird sense of humor, the film takes us on a roller coaster ride. Ray Liotta play Henry and he narrates the film along with his wife Karen, played by Lorraine Bracco. Mr. Liotta plays Henry as guy whom simply loves the life he leads. What could be better than being in the mob, the money, the women, the drugs, the respect. He can't understand how anyone could work in a boring 9-5 job. Ms. Bracco is annoyingly good as the nagging wife from a Jewish family who is thrown into the Italian culture. Joe Pesci plays Tommy DeVito who is another hood. Tommy is basically a psychotic killer and Mr. Pesci plays him with a manic humor. Robert De Niro is Jimmy Burke, who as Henry says, just loves to steal. He ends up becoming paranoid after committing the biggest heist in history. Paul Sorvino is Paulie, the family's leader and he plays him with the attitude and walk of a man who is worthy of the immense respect he gets. No movie has ever incorporated music into scenes as well as Mr. Scorcese does here. Whether it's Donovan's "Atlantis" playing during the beating of a man or the piano coda from "Layla" played when bodies of people Jimmy had knocked off are found, the music truly sets the scene. Again, as it did ten years prior, the Academy gave the best director award to an actor turned first-time director. This time Kevin Coster won for the overbearing Dances With Wolves and Mr. Scorcese was deprived of an award he so richly deserved.

Summary: 5 Star Movie, 2 star DVD
Review: A movie this great deserves a special edition DVD with more than a couple of trailers. Plus, you have to turn the DVD over at a certain point in the movie. I would wait for the re-issue, becase I'm sure that's gotta be in the works. Hopefully they have plans for all Scorsese movies. All the DVD's are bad, with the exception of the special edition of Taxi Driver.

Summary: Essential, but where are the extras?
Review: Goodfellas, like Mean Streets before it, is a landmark of American cinema. First-rate acting from an incredible cast, a fine script, and some of Scorsese's most beautiful scenes (think of the freeze-frame of the exploding car, the long tracking shot into the Copa, the discovery of the dead bodies to the tune of "Layla") make this not one of the best films of the decade but of all time. I must say, however, that I was tempted to give this four stars for the lack of any special features. Widescreen and a movie trailer or two just won't cut it for a film this good. Let's hope there's an anniversary edition released sometime with some goodies attached.

Summary: Don't ask what's in the trunk!
Review: I didn't realize how brilliant this movie was until I watched it about a dozen times. I mean I knew that it was good, but I couldn't appreciate the brilliance in just one sitting. From the beginning of the movie, where our three protagonists, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci are driving in a car making strange noises (don't ask what's in the trunk) to the ending where Henry Hill (Liotta) turns his friends in and leaves the life this movie never misses a step, it is almost as if he directed this movie frame by frame rather than scene by scene. Scorsese's camera work is also brilliant and he has the actors who can pull it off, especially Robert DeNiro. Music is also used masterfully through this movie; from the opening, where a we segue from 1970s to childhood of Goodfella to be Henry Hill in the 1950s to the tune of _From Rags to Riches_ to the frenetic denouement filmed to the tune of _Monkey Man_ by the Rolling Stones_ the music never misses a beat. When you think about some of the musical selections in the context of the scenes they are in it's strange, but despite that it never misses a beat. This movie is based on Nicholas Pileggi's book _Wiseguy_ which is also worth reading.

Summary: A wise movie for wise guy fans!!
Review: Excellent, moving, thrilling, tough, powerfull and that's just Robert De Niro. This movie has it all. Fast paced action, trials and tribulations in a mafia family, deceipt, power, money, betrayal and all put together with De Niro, Pesci and Liota. what more can you ask for. You live the life of Henry Hill starting off as the errand boy in the 50's moving up the ranks to fully fledged gangster (or wise guy) in the 70's and the steep fall downhill when drugs get in the way. Brilliant direction by Scorcese makes this movie a must for any collectors. A classic which will definitely go down in history as one of the top 10!!

Review: I recently saw the movie "Goodfellas" and thought that the acting in it was good and the narration also.Joe Pesci played a ruthless but, yet funny gangstar.Robert Deniro was also good I recommend this to anyone. One of Robert Deniro's BEST!!A+++++ Austin

Review: Goodfellas,directed by Martin Scorsese,ranks right up with The Godfather as my two favorite gangster movies of all time.It's a long movie,but it definately holds one's attention the whole time.The acting is superb-some of the standouts are:Ray Liotta,Robert DeNiro,Joe Pesci,Lorraine Bracco,and Paul Sorvino.The rest of the cast is very good,too.The film is very violent at times,but the violence lends itself to the story.The soundtrack is fantastic,and the cinematography is excellent.Overall,it's just a great movie,and my personal favorite of Scorsese's.
