Summary: Incredible movie, but¿
Review: I have to say that this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Yet the DVD doesn't do this classic justice. First off, the movie is listed as being enhanced for widescreen televisions. Unfortunately, this only applies to the menus, not the film itself. Another major problem is that the soundtrack of this film seems to be mixed in Dolby ProLogic since there's a lack of surround action. And the biggest problem with this disc: it's dual-sided, not dual-layered. In the middle of the film, the disc stops and you have to get up and flip it. Come on: this isn't laser disc.Memo to Warner Bros.: Remaster this epic anamorphically, in DTS digital surround, and make it a special edition, 2-disc set with the film on a dual-layered disc and extras on the second disc.

Summary: The 1990's first great gangster movie
Review: This is an oustanding gangster film - very atmospheric and also acclimates itself well to the various eras in which it takes place. That being said, it's very "real" and sweeping. You almost get the feeling that it was originally about a 4 or 5 hour made for TV production that they cut down for a theatrical release (and so they could have Joe Pesci in it! - who carries much of the film). If you haven't seen it and have even a remote interest in the subject matter, you need to see it. It's very dramatic and also a bit on the graphic side, which contrasts it with its predecessors (The Godfather, The Untouchables, for example). It's not a popcorn and soda movie like those others either, so expect to be either repulsed by its grittyness or totally sucked in to it by its period authenticity and dramatic quality. This film won me over to Joe Pesci. Pesci won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Academy Awards for his job here, and it was well deserved. If you've seen "Casino," he plays a similar type of character in "Goodfellas": DeNiro's over-the-top, brutally comical enforcer. Only here (Goodfellas) he is a better developed character and not just a killing machine. The reason why this isn't a five star review is basically because of Warner Brothers. I will voice the same frustrations as several of the other viewers. This film is about 2 1/2 hours, and you have to get up and flip the disc halfway through. Remember the VHS movies that used to come on 2 tapes? Wasn't that annoying to have 2 tapes to take in and out of the VCR? Well, Warner Brothers has seemingly found a way to do it with DVD - flip the disc. There's a process known as dual layering, but maybe not all of us have heard of it. Another bad thing is the lack of extras. For a movie like this, you have to have that stuff!!! You know, I would gladly pay ten/fifteen more dollars and get a dual layer DVD with an extra disc (like the ones Fox makes every now and then) with all the extras on it. I mean isn't this why we have DVD now?! I know it takes time and money to compile stuff, but come on!-- I think we can expect more than just a widescreen presentation for movies now!

Summary: ferocious realization
Review: Goodfellas what can you say except sit back and enjoy the show!I get gooosebumps just thinking about Henry Hills life story as Martin Scorsese takes you deep into the ruthless world of the mob.Their isn't a dull moment in this edge of your seat thriller.It's the kind of movie you can watch again and again.

Summary: Unforgettable gangster epic
Review: A brilliant, ruthless account of crime and the perils it entails. Ray Liotta, in an Oscar-worthy performance, portrays a novice who is schooled by two mentors, played by Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro, in the game of bullying, smuggling, robbery and murder. The film charts the lives of the chief characters from a panoramic perspective, from the fifties to the eighties, and the scenes of violence have a mean, visceral, maliciously real, (as opposed to merely cinematic) quality. Martin Scorsese directs with a dazzling competence, developing some fascinating techniques of pacing and plot. An absorbing meditation on the underside of the American dream.

Summary: Flat out SCREAMS for a loaded Special Edition
Review: What a shame that one of the greatest films ever gets such a shoddy DVD treatment. I mean come on, a "flipper"?! I gave the movie 5 stars but Warners 0 stars for their treatment of a classic. Note to WB: Dual Layer!! Deleted Scenes!! Director and Actor Commentary!! Trailers!! I promise, the fans will reward your effort.

Review: This is by far the best of the awesome Robert de Niro films, the best collaboration between De Niro and Scorcese, and the best film of the last 25 years. Hell, the best film ever made, lets call it what it is! Great.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!!!
Review: Goodfellas is a Great movie or as my movie buff friends and I put it "Goodfellas is a Fine, Fine, Film" But.... This DVD defeats the purpose of DVD. The disk is single layered, meaning that at this movies length they (Warner Brothers) couldn't fit the whole movie on one side of the disk. You have to flip the disk over mid-film!! Granted it is not the end of the world but it is an inconvenience that a DVD need not have. A DVD is capable of containing two layers per side. Each layer can roughly hold about 2 1/4 hours of high-quality video, audio and subtitles. So, then, each side of a DVD is capable of storing over 4 hours of footage. This means that each DVD can have over 8 hours of material. Longer movies like "Brave Heart" can fit on one side of a DVD and still have space for a "Making of..." Documentary and lot more Bells & Whistles then offered here. I have gone over every symbol and every line of text on the package and find no warning of the "Mid-film Flip". Because of this I am not going to buy another Warner Brothers DVD. If I can not trust the company then my money will go elsewhere, and I suggest you do the same.

Review: This is the worst DVD I own. Goodfellas is my favorite film and to see it get such shabby treatment on DVD is appalling. The interactive scene menu is incomplete. You have to flip the disc to see the second half of the movie. Do not buy this DVD. Buy the letterbox VHS version.

Summary: Deserves better
Review: A masterpiece such as this should really have a DVD version that does it some justice. The extras are virtually none existent. There are two theatrical trailers, the usual cast and crew information(list of films etc) and the disc must be flipped halfway through. The fact that the scene selections are limited to 3,6,9,12 etc just reeks of sheer laziness. For fans of this film, I would not bother to buy this DVD. Either get it on VHS or wait till another better version is released. As for the film in itself, what can I say that has not already been said. Both the direction and the acting is superb. The soundtrack is excellent even for those who do not recognise the individual songs. What I really like about this film is the look in the eyes of the actors. Each of them seem to convey genuine emotion and the way the film is able to say so much with so little dialogue is one of its strengths. In that respect it is similar to the Godfather but is different in most other ways. I don't think it is fair to compare the two as they deal with completely different characters and situations. I would definitely recommend both films to get a full idea of top class filmaking. (It would have either 4 or 5 stars if not for the poor DVD quality)

Review: The content rates five stars, one of the best movies in cinema history. Warner Brothers making me get up in the middle of the movie to flip the disc? That rates -10 stars. I should have just gotten it on VHS.
