Rating: Summary: Great Movie! But this DVD version needs an update badly! Review: 5 stars for the movie itself... But this DVD version get's 2 stars because I have two major gripes concerning the DVD production! First... Single layer means you have to flip the disc, which is REALLY inexcusable these days in DVD production! Would've been nice if they disclosed the layer type on the packaging! I wouldn't have dropped $(...) for this archaicly produced version had I known that! I mean this is WB here folks! Even Anchor Bay finally got up to production speed as far as layering is concerned! If I wanted to flip sides to a movie I would've bought a laserdisc player! Second... The sound! The 5.1 audio is lacking! In fact! The most underused 5.1 mix I've ever heard on a DVD! Most the movie actually seems to be mostly in mono with surround audio used scarcely! This DVD would've gotten 1 star. But the picture is very crisp! And it's nice to watch the flick in widescreen even if it's non-anamorphic... Yet another reason for WB to update the version!
Rating: Summary: Look Out, "Godfather"! Review: If the "Godfather" films are your cup of tea, then you must see "Goodfellas"! Where the "Godfather" movies told the tale of gangster royalty, "Goodfellas" tells the story of the mob from a blue collar perspective. The performances are spectacular, the dialogue is sharp, and the cinematography is breath-taking. And the soundtrack! Wow! Each song is perfectly chosen for its scene. A phenomenal piece of film-making---possibly Scorsese's best work.
Rating: Summary: Good acting, good script, good direction 'Goodfellas' Review: Arguably Martin Scorsese is the most underrated director in Hollywood. No matter how good the films are this man makes the academy always overlooks him for the best director award. Goodfellas is another film in a long line where this was the case. The direction in this film is fantastic and the foresight it took to frame some of the shots in the film (namely the car boot scene) are fabulous. The film centres around organised crime as many of Scorsese's films do, but there is something about the characters that make them endering. They're the kind of characters that the viewer doesn't want to be caught, we get to know them so well even though their motivations are so stilted we don't want them to lose. We get to know the charactersfrom early on as we follow the gang from their petty theivery to plane heists. The cast are great Liotta is sparkling, Pesci although always playing very similar characters is great (if it 'aint broke, don't fix it) and De'Niro is fabulous as always. Even the young Loriane Bracco (from Soprano's fame) deserved her nomination for best supporting actress in 1990. Watch this movie if you enjoyed 'The Godfather' films, 'Casino' or love 'The Sopranos' 4.5 Stars
Rating: Summary: great movie but not worth it on dvd Review: Goodfellas is one of the best movies of all time, but it's dvd layout is very poor. it is 2 sided, meaning you have to get up in the middle of the movie and turn it to the other side, which is very distracting. also there are almost no special features. if it wasnt for these two faults i would give it 5 stars, but it the faults took away from my viewing experience
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies I've ever seen Review: If you havent yet seen this movie your missing out on one of the best movies ever made. I too was disapointed with the DVD though. This was one of the first DVDs to come out so its understandable that it doesnt have a lot of extras. What i want is for them to make a new Special Edition like they did with Seven. i was happy to spend another measly $20 to get the better version. Its a huge pain to flip the disc and i would love for it to be Enhanced for 16:9 TVs. Also they need to put Jackie Brown on DVD soon. I know it has nothing to do with this but still.
Rating: Summary: Fun movie with a different look at the Mafia... Review: This movie is a wonderful movie exploring the second generation of lower-level Mafia, say Michael Corleone's underlings, though that is perhaps not the most accurate description. These guys certainly aren't as smooth as the Corleones, and not nearly as rich. At any rate the fast pace and fabulous directing of this movie really take it from mediocre to superb. Of course, the solid corps of actors, from Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco to especially Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, make for superb characterization. GOODFELLAS shows a more middle-class Mafia that is often funny and almost surreal, and always interesting. Highly reccomended.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Movie, Terrible DVD Review: I'm only writing this review so I can add my name to the list of disapointment for this DVD. Goodfellas is my favorite movie of all time. In my opinion its one of the best movies ever made so what up with this terrible DVD? No special feautres and you have to flip the disc in the middle of the movie? It would be really cool to see a special addition or a Criterion Collection of this movie. This is one of the few where I'd rather watch the Video. So I give the Movie 5 stars I give the DVD Zero
Rating: Summary: "The Best Mob Movie Ever" Review: That's what Roger Ebert said about this edge of the seat, violent masterpiece of filmaking. Scorsese once again choises Thelma Schoonmaker as the film editor, and for the second time Michael Ballhaus as the director of photography, and the result is a knock out. Robert De Niro once again exhibts a powerhouse preformace, along with Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, and Lorraine Bracco. Pileggi and Scorsese write a very good screenplay, but if more parts that were in the book Wise Guy were in the movie, it would have been better. And once again, Warner Brothers chooses to completely throw away the potential of the DVD. The picture is grainy and has a lot of distracting elements, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundrack dosen't even have any surround envolpment. Can somebody please tell me why you have to flip it? And where's the special features?
Rating: Summary: What can I say? One of the best mob movies EVER! Review: Goodfellas is a great movie- really well made. Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci are awesome. I am not a big Ray Liotta fan, but he was ok too. The DVD is of great quality with good bonus material.
Rating: Summary: The Movie's Divine, the Disc is Awful! Review: I'll give GOODFELLAS five stars. As ma matter of fact, I'd give it six or seven if I could. This film is seminal in the Gangster genre, and deserves to be on the top shelf right next to THE GODFATHER I and II (as Carmela Soprano said, "The Godfather III? What happened?"). The story concerns the doings of one Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), a lifelong wiseguy turned government informant, and how the lousy rat flipped on his friends to save his own pencil neck. The movie is based directly on Nicholas Pileggi's excellent book "Wise Guy," which chronicles the downfall of the Vario crime family of Brooklyn. Why Scorsese and Pileggi decided to fictionalize some names in the movie (the Varios become the Ciceros) is beyond me, since the book uses real names. Scorsese's directing is so effortless that the movie becomes a literal glimpse through a glass darkly into the real world of organized crime. This movie lacks the operatic overtones of THE GODFATHER, skips the fedoras and the pinstripes, and focuses far more on the day-to-day low-end extortion, strong-arm, and petty rip-offs of a crime family really struggling to survive in a changing post-war world. Their one big score ultimately proves their undoing. David Chase (creator of THE SOPRANOS) credits GOODFELLAS as his "Koran," and the GOODFELLAS influence on THE SOPRANOS is immediately obvious. Lorraine Bracco ("Dr. Melfi" in THE SOPRANOS) plays Karen Hill, Henry's long-suffering wife who ultimately becomes his main accomplice. Spectacular performances are handed in by Robert DeNiro ("Jimmy 'The Gent' Burke") and Paul Sorvino ("Paulie Cicero"). Liotta is wonderful as Hill, a human barometer of the effectiveness of the Mob. Hill's decision to turn rat has no moral scruples to it, it is strictly selfish, and Liotta manages to capture both Hill's fear (of both cops and robbers) and his absolute self-centeredness exquisitely. Michael Imperioli (THE SOPRANOS' "Christopher") has a small role as "Spider," a slow-moving waiter who runs afoul of "Tommy" played by Joe Pesci in an Oscar-winning performance. Pesci is so frightening as the psychopathic Tommy that nerves jangle every time he appears on camera. The fact that Tommy is also, ironically, murderously funny, only increases the fear factor. The one failing of this DVD has nothing to do with the film. It is the only DVD I have seen in years which has to be turned over in the middle. Why this phenomenal film hasn't been reissued in a Special Edition, or remastered to fit on one side of a disc, is absolutely unexplainable. The break is ridiculously distracting. Until WB reissues it, stick with the VHS format.
