Review: This was a fantastic movie. This has "Oscar" written all over it for Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. This is by far Tom Hanks best performance to date. A must-see movie!

Review: I've been looking forward to this film forever. A few years back I read in a magazine that Tom Hanks was gonna play a gangster in a film called Road to Perdition. From then on I couldn't wait. Well the day finally came and I sat down to watch this much anticipated movie... This film was SUPERB! I mean ... wow! I haven't seen a movie this good in a while. Minority Report was great, but RTP gave me the chills. Very rare. Everything in this movie is just done very ... well. First off I have to give props to Sam Mendez, who directed American Beauty. He's just a great filmmaker. The shots and camera angles he thinks up are amazing. The cinematagraphy is also VERY well done. Acting was top notch. Loved Tom Hanks and the rest. Let me tell you, the action in RTP is AWESOME! The shootouts feel very real and draw you in. I was shaking my legs throughout throughout the whole movie - it was tense! This film is an instant classic in my book. And will definitely be remembered in the oscars. Everyone MUST go see Road to Perdition. It's remarkable.

Summary: Americanized "Lone Wolf and the Cub"
Review: "A new Mafia movie"? Hmmm... How about a remake of a Japanese samurai epic. Has anybody seen the TV series "Lone Wolf and the Cub" or read the comic books? I dare say most who have seen the original will agree the TV series was way better, in all ways.

Review: ...Go see Road to Perdition. That's pretty much all I have to say. I'll go on about all of the top-notch acting, cinemetogaraghy, production design, music, etc., but the point here is to see it. I'm not going to talk about the plot that much, but if you look at the movie poster, you should be able to at least guess most of it right there. Anyway, the acting is the best I've seen this whole year, with stellar performances by Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, and Daniel Craig. The scenes between Tom Hanks and Paul Newman were great. Of course, it's always great to see two phenomonal actors on-screen together. More importantly, the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Tyler Hoechlin (his son in the movie) is wonderful. The production design is also very noteworthy. Throughout the movie, we are filled with the lush cityscape(s) of 1931. (If you have seen The Untouchables, the set desgin is a bit like that, but stepped up a notch.) We also are taken in to speakeasies, mob warehouses, and other landmarks of a 1931 era city, all rendered in exact detail as far as I can tell. The cinemetogarahy is exactly on the same level as the production design, showing in great exactness the landscape of cities in 1931. The music is also great, giving an epic, but sad, look at the movie. For those of you who are looking for a big gangster action movie, look elsewhere. Although there is some shooting, (most of which is very bloody/gruesome) this is NOT the movie for action fans. All in all: Road to Perdition is a modern masterpiece, complete with phenomonal acting, great music, fantastic production design, and heart-wrenching drama. A must see. 2002; 119 minutes; RATED R for some strong language, gruesome violence, and brief drug use; MY GRADE: A+. NOTE: I'd like to warn you readers that if you don't see this movie, Tom Hanks might come to your house with his Tommy Gun.

Review: I was totally thrown off by this movie. I didn't like this movie because of one reason: VERY LITTLE TALKING! You would sit through minutes of silence. That wouldn't happen a few times it would happened a lot!! Because of the lack of talking I didn't get into the story. I really tried to let this movie capture me but just found this movie to be boring. (sorry)

Summary: A meeting of the masters
Review: A few weeks ago I did a review for "Spy Game", where the highlight for me was the successfull pairing of Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. I playfully referred to them and Old Hunk (OH) and New Hunk (NH), but meant it in a complimentatry manner. With "Road to Perdition", we now have New Master getting to work with Old Master. I don't feel the need to underestimate your intelligence to explain who is who. First Old Master. After seeing the lightweight "Where the Money Is", it is great to see that somebody in Hollywood is wise to try and give OM some meaty roles this late in his career. While he himself was a rival to Redford for "Hunk" title, Old Master has always been the one who was the master of the craft of acting. In this movie he plays an old gangster who knows and accepts his role in life. He may pay for it in an afterlife, but it is the life he has chosen, and accepts it. Then there is New Master. While it is easy to dismiss him as "too popular", one has to admire NM for taking on different, challenging roles. With his stature in Hollywood, he didn't have to take on the physical challenges of a role such as "Cast Away", but did anyway. And it's still somewhat of a risk today to play a bad guy, much less a professional killer. New Master takes on this role, but adds depth to it. He is old enough to be totally "made" in the profession, but still young enough to question whether this was a good idea or not. The plot is decent, in that we have New Master worrying about leading his son into the life he has chosen. The fact that he has worries about his son proves he has doubts about whether he himself correctly chose the profession. But it is the interraction between OM and NM that make the movie worth seeing. Also good is the filming itself. Remember in "The Exorcist" when Father Merrin first arrives at the steps of Regan's residence? The dark, rainy, foggy stuff? Well, this movie is full of this. Yes, it can be depressing, but I found it the correct atmosphere for this kind of story. See it.

THREE HOURS LONG! THE CAST IS GOOD-TOM HANKS WILL BE NOMINATED AND WILL WIN A AWARD FOR THIS MOVIE FOR SURE! TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE-THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT! SO I WOULD RECCOMEND THIS MOVIE TO ANYONE WHO LIKES CRIME MOVIES-
EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT THRILLED BY CRIME IN REAL LIFE-IM MORE INTO PLANE CRASHES! THE NAMES SULLIVAN-YOU NEED ME TO SPELL IT?

Summary: Finally A New Mafia Movie!
Review: As far as I am concerned this is the first real gangster film since 1992's CASINO and if you have ever seen the two masterpieces that are the best movies in American history (Godfather Parts 1 and 2) you know that almost without exception mob movies are always great. (The reason I say CASINO is latest mob movie is because I don't really think HEAT is a mafia movie though it is also good.) This movie looks different. It looks to play the family angle since the premise is that Tom Hanks is playing one of Al Capone's assasins in 1930's Chicago and his son sees him doig a job on a poor victim. Now they have to flee together from Capone. (*NOTE: Paul Newman also plays Hank's father figure in yet another brilliant role for Newman) This looks to be an escape from the popcorn movies of the summer, even though some of them have been pretty good this year. This movie also looks to use historical figures. I don't know what Hank's character is named but I am fairly sure he was a real man and of course Capone is real as well. Another thing this movie has or really doesn't have is the Italian greats (Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Joe Peschi, Ray Liotta, or even Andy Garcia) but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a stellar cast. These are three things the Godfather had and others did not have which is why this is my pick to win Best Picture (even though the Oscars are 8 months way) Don't let any tv spots fool you because a mere mortal guy could have as just as much fun as a high-and-mighty movie crictic in this one. Much like most mob movies you don't have to analyze eveything to realize its a great movie. Everyone is great in this movie. Not a suprise really but I am swallowing a lot of pride saying that Tom Hank's is great in this since I am NOT his biggest fan at all. Of course Paul Newman is great. The costumes are also exceptionaly well done. The lighting is good (one thing that made the Godfather). The plot is very interesting and sort of glorifies the mob and brow beats it all the same time, another element of the Godfather. The bottomline is with Star Wars, Spider-Man, Scooby Doo, etc. out there right now there are not too many movies a mature teen or and adult can go see and not be worried about any kiddie elements. Well this is that movie. One Thing you may want to know is:
*WHAT IS PERDITION?
I didn't know what Perdition was until I saw a previe guide that said it meant eternal Hell. This makes the title great and sort of a subject of conversation. Can this movie have the impact of the Godfather?
Can it be as good as the Godfather?
Will it be fun?
Will it be an Oscar-contender?
Well all those questions should be put to rest one way or another but at ant rate, I will see you in theaters July 12th when it opens nationwide.
