Summary: Dreadful
Review: It is movies like this that give independent film a bad name. Dull, unbelievably self-indulgent, and totally full of itself, this has to ranks with among the most over rated films of the past 10 years. Mere word cannot express just how off the mark this film makes, and that so many people touted this as the pinnacle of independent film making does a lot to explain why the genre is avoided by so many.

Summary: I completely adored this movie.
Review: Sling Blade captivated my full and undivided attention from the moment it began. I immediately adored Carl (Billy Bob Thornton's character) and wanted him to be a hero. And the boy who played his friend was the most amazing child actor I have ever had the pleasure of watching perform. I highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone who asks for a movie suggestion.

Buy it. Watch it 100 times. Love it more and more every time you see it.

Summary: An Excellent film...very touching performance.
Review: Billy Bob Thornton's "Slingblade" easily lives up to the praises it's received. A beautifully scripted film that touches the heart of the viewer and entertains from beginning to end. Thornton's spellbounding portrayal of Karl is untouchable. The viewer immediately falls in love with Karl's compassion and simplicity. Excellent movie...see it now!!

Summary: Siskel & Ebert dropped the ball here - AVOID!!!!!
Review: What a stupid movie. What a shameless Oscar bid by Billy Bob Thorton. What an idiotic story. What an excremental script. And how stupid does Billy Bob & Co. think we are? I mean, a key plot development is the main character meeting a small boy, explaining that he just got out of a mental home where he was imprisoned for killing some people immediately after which the small boy invites him to come live with him. A second key plot is the small boy's mother being told all this and not having any problem with this arrangement. HEL-LO?! I just cannot say enough bad things about this movie and its painfully obvious attempt to use the now almost cliched "noble retarded character" to show how terrible "normal" people are. BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD.

Summary: A simply riviting, startling and emotional film!
Review: This sleeper film and its characters can be compared to the southern characters and story of "Fried Green Tomatoes".

The characterizations are very real and the story is stark and dramatic. Obviously those who hated the film have no sense of emotion whatsoever. I guess you either love or hate this film.

If you like films that don't resort to gratuitious violence and thrive off of shear emotion than this will be a great addition to your DVD collection.

Summary: An excellent choice
Review: The review I read of this movie before seeing it described it as "the most heartwarming movie about a killer you'll ever see." This is an excellent movie, filled with both emotion and amusing moments.

Summary: Letdown
Review: I remember when this movie was released. Review after review praised it as one of the best movies of the year. Kudos were heaped on Billy Bob Thornton for his screenplay and his performance as retarded Karl. I was very eager to see this movie, as an alternative to all the sludge that Hollywood seems to produced these days.

What a disappointment it was! The screenplay was pretty mundane, full of cardboard characters masquerading as compelling ones (the John Ritter character is as close as the movie gets to a fully developed one, and even that misses the mark by quite a bit). As for the performance of Billy Bob Thornton, it is far from as impressive as the reviews indicated. More or less, he grunts his lines in the same fashion over and over. I can remember valid criticism for Dustin Hoffman's performance in "Rain Man" as being one note and transparent. Thornton's performance here is pretty much the same.

Had this movie not received such advanced hype, I probably would have been a little more generous in the number of stars I awarded it. But in an intense effort to bring the world back to reality, I have given it only one. Maybe now things will even out.

Summary: Excessively Overrated
Review: Good Lord was this an over-hyped movie or what? I mean it's OK, but COME ON! Some OK performances, but very very simplistic.

Summary: Great Movie Experience
Review: One of the better films I've seen. Excellent performance from Billy Bob Thornton, JT Walsh, and Dwight Yoakum. Find a copy of "Some folks call it a Sling Blade" the B&W short film that Billy Bob made which preceeds this feature length production. It's even more powerful. If you are a true movie buff and have half as much brains as "retarded" Carl you'll love this one!
