Rating: Summary: A Shame We Won't See It Where I'm From. Review: I saw this film while I was in Sydney in '97. I wasn't doing anything in particular, apart from watching a lot of films. This one has stayed in my head since then. It was a truly wonderful experience for me. I don't believe it will be released in Britain on video, which sickens me. We seem to get a lot of dodgy sh**te from the States, which means that we have to search harder for the little gems such as, Slingblade. I had a lump in my throat throughout most of it; when I didn't, found myself laughing out ( which is rare for me ). So, do yourselves a favour and watch or buy this. Rarely have I made such good use of a couple of hours.
Rating: Summary: Simply put- it's a GREAT movie Review: Iam so amazed by some of the comments from people saying this movie has an unbelievable story line ie " a mother lets her little boy befriend a mentally retarded man just released from custody for murdering his mother and her boyfriend 25 yrs ago" Well "HELLO" out there- I don't remember the last time I saw a "believable" story line in Any major movie hitting the boxoffices today!! But at least it was a "feel good" movie and we could dream that people really could be like Karl, the boy and his mother.God help those skeptics that couldn't see anything good about this movie.
Rating: Summary: best movie of all time? Review: is this the best movie of all time? Not only should Billy Bob Thorton receive an academy award but Dwight Yokam is unbelieveable. Also, John Ritter should have been considered for best supporting actor. That might be a stretch but this is such a well acted film you cant help but get caught up in the emotion. The plot line is simple ( i agree with another critical reviewer that no mother would let her child hang out with an adult like that ) but considering the terrible " films " in hollywood these days it would definately suffice. Not only is this low budget film ( this fact only ADDS to the wonderful make-up of this movie ) a sure Oscar winner, but this just might be the best " all around " movie of all time!
Rating: Summary: Bad. I mean REALLY bad Review: With all the junk that is churned out by Hollywood these days, I am always eager for an alternative. So this one sounded like a good bet. Boy was I ever wrong. This dreadful little film is proof positive that just because a film is not associated with Hollywood does not make it a good movie. The whole plot is totally implausible (right, a mother is really going to let her kid hang out with a man just released from mental institution for murdering his mother - sure), the acting unbearably over rated, and the dialogue bordering on the preposterous. Will someone please announce that the emperor is wearing no clothes?
Rating: Summary: Brilliant film.. Review: All those people who complained about the "lack" of story in this film..Get over it!!!!! The whole point is to try and show some sort of simplistic narrative and let the viewer think for themselves about the rest. Obviously those who are condemning this movie are those who like every little bit wrapped up and given to them on a silver platter. Billy Bob Thronton is amazing as Karl. Those who insist of criticising his performance are those who sit in their armchair at home and pull out every little negative detail they can find. Nothing is perfect (as one other person commented), they dont call it ACTING for nothing. John Ritter is great in his role while the lush camera work and drowsy state of proceedings in a plus, not a hinderence. It seems viewers now days need face paced action, with every line and action to contain some meaning and for that meaning to be spelt out to them. If they watched Sling Blade for what it is, a simple and moving story, then maybe they would see the light.
Rating: Summary: Everyone hates a critic, now we know why... Review: It is the folks that didn't find Mr. Thornton engaging, entertaining and, at times very funny that are the duds regarding this movie. Did any of you hear Daniel Lanois' soundtrack? That alone might provide a basis for not slamming the work. Maybe it's those of you who have seen too many movies, that don't know what's good. For what it was, it was a very entertaining film. I guess if every line isn't perfectly written, acted, and directed you all have your chance to whine. Get out and get some fresh air, maybe you'll see that NOTHING is perfect, not even movies. Anyway, perfection has nothing to do with entertainment in the end. Great flick...
Rating: Summary: Not Great, but very close! Review: This movie needs to be seen more than once to really enjoy it. When I watched it the first time, it was disturbing / troubling / erratic and strangely paced. I really don't purchase many movies; this one is good enough to buy and watch again. Don't buy the anti-critic sniping - it's really a good flick. One note of caution - Dwight Yoakum as an actor makes a really good C&W singer.
Rating: Summary: best ever film Review: this has got to be the best film i have ever seen. Billy Bob deserved all acknowledgements that he received. have watched this 6 times and it gets better each time. it is a must see!!
Rating: Summary: Groan Review: Whenever I hear somebody proclaim that Sling Blade "is one of the best movies I have ever seen" I immediately conclude that they must not have seen very many movies. Face it folks, this movie is a dud. Over rated, and hyped beyond belief. The story is totally implausible, the acting strictly one note. That this has received so many rave reviews is a sad commentary on the state of American cinema.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Movie!!! Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. You have to look deeper than the movie its self. You have to look at how he love the little boy and did not want him to be abused. You have to see how smart he was even though he was classified retarded. GOOD JOB BILLY BOB!!!
