Summary: The best movie of all time!
Review: Murder, money, greed, and so much more. How could it get any better? Just ask the characters of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil! Their contributions have made it the best movie of all time! Kevin Spacey, John Cusack as well as all of the other cast members made me want to be there in the middle of the action. The movie, the book, the A&E documentary and visiting the city have all made for a great experience. You haven't lived untill you have lived through their eyes.

Summary: Not Bad At All
Review: So many critics suggest that this film was not as good as the literature, but and gave this film a bad score. Also someof the viewer suggested that this film was too long, Well, I will love to view this film 10 times than watching Titanic even just once (I had actually wasted 3 hours and $4.5 in theater for that sinked ship. The greatest thing about this movie ia the acting. From kelso- Wilams- Chabli- Joe- Mendy to Minerva, the verbal and non- verbal expression showed the credits of this film. If you are a viewer who will like to watch the great actings, you can think about to get this video.

Summary: Good music, good scenery, but very long movie
Review: There were two reasons why I picked up this film: 1.) Kevin Spacey and 2.) it takes place in Savannah, GA, which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. I knew very little about the story; I knew that it had something to do with a murder, and that no one could figure out if the rich man (Spacey) had killed him or not. I found out later that it was in fact a true story, which made it even more intriguing. However, I feel that the heart of this movie lies not in the murder mystery itself, but in the eccentric characters who occupy the city of Savannah. John Cusack as an outsider becomes a representation of the audience, someone who stumbles along and slowly comes to appreciate the many different people of the city. The audience is taken on a whirlwind tour of some of the most interesting and odd people to exist in the South. I especially loved the Lady Chablis; that character is too melodramatic and amusing for words. In addition to the interesting characters, there is the great music of Savannah's Johnny Mercer, which really adds to the authenticity of the piece. As a director, Clint Eastwood has a gift for capturing the heart and spirit of the city on film. However, he still needs to learn a thing or two about storytelling. For one thing, the movie is way too long; they try to fit too much into the story, making it at times jumbled and incoherent. I found myself losing interest a couple of times, especially when Spacey's character was brought to trial. That trial dragged on forever! The ending didn't make any sense, either. Despite these discrepancies, I have viewed the film a number of times, and I have concluded that you either have to be a huge Kevin Spacey fan, or else you really have to like the scenery and music to sit through it more than once.

Summary: hummmmmm
Review: Well, this is definately a different movie! Kevin Spacey is one of the best actors of all time, that's the best thing about this movie, even though this is not one of his best performances. I thought it was kind of boring, for the fact that it is a very long movie, but yet there is nothing to it. The story is just Kevin shooting someone, then going to trial for murder, with a bunch of nothing in between. So if you like Kevin Spacey you should see this, and if not, you still may like it anyway.

Summary: "Midnight" not for everyone, but worth a try.
Review: Savannah, Georgia. New York journalist John Kelso, has been sent on three-day assignment to cover one the famous Christmas parties of Jim Williams, an art collector and antiques dealer played by Kevin Spacey. During his first day in Savannah, Kelso, played by John Cusack, meets some of the town's interesting residents: Sonny Seiler, Jim's attorney and owner of the University of Georgia's mascot UGA the bulldog; Billy Hanson a young, rough-looking employee of Jim's; Joe Odem an ex-barrister turned piano player; and Mandy Nichols, a beautiful stranger who wakes Kelso from his sleep and invites him to join in some late night festivities. Kelso becomes more and more intrigued with Jim throughout his Christmas party and is impressed by Jim's collection of fine art. Just as Jim shows more of his private collection to Kelso, Billy arrives angry and drunk demanding money from Jim. When Jim refuses to give him the money, Billy uses a broken bottle to threaten them. Jim stays calm and seems unfazed, and in frustration Billy leaves, peeling down the street in his prized Camero. Later that evening, long after all of the guest have departed, Billy is dead, shot several times by Jim. This brings up an interesting dilemma. Did Jim shoot Billy in self-defense or in cold blood? Kelso calls his editor to say he intends to prolong his stay in Savannah, until he figures out what really happened that night.

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," directed by Clint Eastwood, is not so much a murder mystery as it is a search for answers where hidden truths are discovered. If murder and light romance aren't enough to keep the story appealing, then the varied cast of characters that Eastwood brings together certainly will sustain interest. Included in this fascinating character line-up are Minerva the voodoo priestess, Lady Chablis the downtown showgirl, and Luther Driggers a scorned inventor, all of whom Kelso encounters during his investigation.

Cusack's performance is only mediocre. You would think that a New York reporter has seen it all, but Cusack makes the "Yankee" Kelso mismatched with the natives of Savannah. Although Cusack gives Kelso his witty and charming moments, during half of the film he has a dumbfounded and confused appearance. His mouth hangs open and he seems to be lost be in the "everyday" actions going on around him. It is not until the end of the film that Cusack's character is able to blend in with the rest of the crowd.

In comparison, Spacey's performance is very satisfying. Spacey is able to embody the typical blue-blooded Southern gentleman. Spacey is suave and sophisticated with just the right amount fiery passion. He masterfully keeps his character, Jim Williams, constant and contained - a completely credible character.

It should be noted that Lady Chablis' performance as "herself" brings light-hearted comic relief to the entire film that should bring at least a grin to every viewer.

Reviews on this film vary greatly. Those who praise "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" enjoy the variety of characters, compliment both Cusack and Spacey on their performances, and are awed by the beauty of Savannah. The discontented critics of the film argue that it is way too lengthy, the plot was confusing, and that the film does not do justice to John Berendt's fact-based novel. It is a common opinion that most films are inferior to the texts that they are based on. It should be kept in mind that this is only one person's interpretation of the story, and it is not a simple task to put on film all of the detail that is disclosed in a book I have not yet read Berendt's text, but I anticipate doing so to further explore the personalities of characters such as the savvy Chablis, enigmatic Minerva, and the fly-toting Luther Driggers.

Summary: A good movie, especially if you know the WHOLE story behind
Review: I've seen it for several times, and it just got better everytime. It's interesting that ppl who gave 1 star for it have all seen the VHS format.A tip:watch the DVD.Much clearer(Savannah is LOVELY),and the things added in it just makes MGGE better.I think the party scene(the whole film actually)reminds ppl of Jim Williams in a lot of ways:it was filmed in Jim's house, those ppl were mostly Jim's guests, and so on.And get the sound track with Kevin singing The Old Black Magic.SpecTACular...

Summary: Good movie - great book!
Review: I was invited to see the movie when it was in the theatre. It was quite good. When it came out on audio tape, I got the tape to listen to while on a trip outwest. When the paperback finally came out, I read it - the book is wonderfully rich. The movie didn't do too bad of matching the book. Finally the video is available, and it will be in my library shortly.

Summary: A PATHETIC MISH-MASH - PAINFUL TO WATCH
Review: Right from the first scene this movie was divebomb hopeless. Confusion galore, terribly weak acting, extremely unrealistally portrayed. John Cusack could not have been a poorer choice (nor doen a poorer job)and I was very disappointed in Spacey as well. As one review said -- he seemed to be sleep walking through the movie. 'Tis so true.He did not belong there!! In short .. I HATED this movie and I hope we can all forget real, real soon. What a waste of time. I cannot imagine the life of the reviewer who said they watched this 3x in one weekend and continue to watch it weekly. One time was one too many for me!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A must see for Spacey and Cusack fans alike!
Review: As most movies made from best selling books rarely do the book any justice, I decided to see the movie first! Wow! I love this movie! There are so many rich characters and rich heritage that I couldn't help but watch it 3 times the weekend I rented it! I am now a proud owner, and continue to make it one my weekly watches! A must see!
