Review: which can truly encompass Glory. I am not a war film fan, a civil war history buff, I was persuaded to watch this film. I am so glad I did. This is a film about people, people who strive to make things better for themselves, for others. An inspirational piece. The acting is magnificent. Shaw on the beach, look out for it, his eyes showed his fear far better than mere words could ever do. The musical score gets the heart pounding, soaring, crashing. Keep a box of tissues beside you, you'll need them.

Summary: A story of bravery and honor, beautifully told
Review: A truly breathtaking historical drama. This film centers around the African-American Massachusetts regiment that became the first to fight in the Union army. These were men who were only too eager to fight against the hated Confederacy, but who also needed the education to become soldiers.Their leader is Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), who is chosen to manage this "project". Cary Elwes is his friend, a major who had a more difficult time adjusting to new troops. Morgan Freeman plays one soldier who possesses the maturity and leadership for this unit, Andre Braugher (the great Frank Pembleton from "Homicide: Life on the Street") is a free Massachusetts black man who volunteers for the regiment faces some uncomfortable changes both inside and outside himself. And then there is Denzel Washington's Oscar-winning performance as one stubborn soldier who is as difficult as can be, but becomes a soldier worthy of his unit. Directed by the brilliant Edward Zwick, Glory features a cast and crew that managed to excel at everything. James Horner's score mixed with the Harlem Boys Choir's voices, melt with the images on the screen of troops that were ready to sacrifice everything for their cause. Perhaps above all is Freddie Francis' cinematography. His photography, whether of battle, the troops themselves, or the overall atmosphere of war, brings the audience into this film with a spirit that is rare. There have always been some grumblings about Broderick as the choice to play an Army Colonel, but he plays Shaw with maturity and poise. The rest of the cast are all terrific, and all deliver excellent performances. This is truly a film to watch again and again, to see the horrors of the Civil War, and the heroism of African-Americans ready for battle, and the bravery of the white leaders that led them there. Review: This is the ultimate movie about the American Civil War. Focusing on the first black soldiers unit of the War, it has incredible fighting scenes, great acting by Washington, Broderick, Elwes and Freeman and a great script. No comments. It is perfect.

Summary: Great Civil War Film
Review: The first thing I must say is there should have been more Oscars for the cast of this film. Denzel Washington won one but Freeman,Brodrick,Kennedy and especially Braugher should have been nominated.Andre Braughers protrayl of Thomas, a young man caught between two worlds, was just plain brilliant. This film centers around the 54th Massachusetts Regt. of the Union Army. This movie is a roller-coaster ride of emotion as it deals with war,prejudice and personality clashes. It's battle scenes are fantastic and it's equipment accurate for the day. It is not for the squimish,as it is gory,but a great film none the less.And I spelled portrayl wrong earlier,what a Putz.

Review: If not the best, one of the top three war epics ever made. Not giving this picture the Academy Award for Best Film adds credence to any arguments on the Academy's shallowness in voting. If you enjoy historical epics, you will cherish this movie. Superior acting throughout the film. You've most likely heard of Denzell Washington's famous scene where he endures the army's whip, and if you read an interview on Mr. Washington, you can witness one of the most powerful acting moments in history as he talks about what he did to get into character. The final battle is overwhelming, especially when you realize that these brave men are marching to their death in the name of all injustices inflicted to black Americans past/present/future. One of the most touching pieces of cinema ever made.

Summary: the most inspirational picture ever made
Review: just one of the most moving, inspirational films I've ever seen. With outstanding performances among the key players, morgan freeman telling wide eyed black children down south that he left a run away slave and came back a fighting man, that it is now the year of jubilee, gods kingdom on earth, the shoe scene when the broderick character finally gets as indignant at the poor treatment his regiment receives as they do, the singing session before the big battle (beautiful beyond words) and the prayers and chorus of the soliders (I was in bondage and now I walk tall, I stand up, I feel like a man) to encapsulate morgan freemans speech and washingtons.And of course the ending, so heroic, so filled with power and glory and might and strength and courage, with denzel taking the flag and his enemy snowflake offering to pick it up if he falls. Going to certain death here on earth but walking into heaven, knowing they fought the good fight, they stayed the course, and they gave their lives for something greater than themselves, freedom from oppression and the ability (not to trivialize) to feel equal to the next person. Anybody low in spirits should watch this film, it will lift you up. And the score is so beautiful, its like listening to a religious hymn all the way through. I finally bought the soundtrack I loved it so much. Definately a must see.

Review: Loosely based on the book, "One Gallant Rush," the movie, "Glory" is a must see for Civil War buffs and students of history. After nine years of teaching junior high history, only this film and "Memphis Belle" has been hits with my students

Summary: One of the best war documentaries ever
Review: My social studies class recently saw this movie for our civil war unit. It was such a good movie. It really showed and explained what reading a bok does not. Many kids were in tears byt he end of the movie because of the strong realstionships held in the movie among the characters. If you have not seen glory, i strongly recomend that you do.

Summary: An Epic Struggle
Review: During the Civil War, the order was given for the organization of the first black regiment. To be led by General Robert Shaw, it proved not only to be a significant turning point in the war, but also led to an amazing act of bravery. "Glory" follows General Shaw (whose letters a large portion of the movie is based on), a young, confused man amidst racism, hate, anger, and war in a struggle for solace. Played by Mathew Broderick, one of the few roles he fits perfectly, he leads the regiment into history. Denzel Washington won a supporting oscar for his role as a bitter ex-slave who desires to fight, and he'll fight anyone he can. A monumental success for Washington. Zwick's direction is enchanting, capturing the characters faces up close often to examine the mental anguish surrounding the regiment and making no secret that war is brutal. A war-film of true grit and quality, with an terrificly effective score from Horner, "Glory" plays off of fact and ends in legend.
