Summary: Glory Review
Review: Glory - Film Review

This movie starred Denzel Washington as Trip, and Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Shaw. It portrayed the African - American involvement in the American Civil War. It follows the 54th Massachusetts regiment, lead by Colonel Robert Shaw. It was based on the books Lay this Laurel and One Gallant Rush, which were based on the letters by Colonel Robert Shaw. I liked the film, as it was not boring and it contained action scenes I would give it about 7/10. One of the scenes was when the black 54th Massachusetts were denied as much pay as the other white soldiers, so the officers in charge of the 54th refused to get pay as well. Another incident was when the regiment went to attack Fort Wagner, a fort of about 1000 men, they failed, Robert Shaw was killed and the fort was never taken.

Summary: Glory
Review: This movie's main characters staring in it were Denzel Washington, Mathew Broderick. Glory was only an interesting movie at the start and at end of the film with few things of interest during the body of movie. Otherwise I thought it was quite boring because of the scenes which only talking occurred, an example was during the training scenes which nothing much happened. The battle scenes were quite realistic but a little over exaggerated compared to the real battles were many less died. The special effects were fair but not quite up to today's standard because it was only made in 1989. I thought that the best scenes were both scenes at start and finish. The first battle scene where he looses his entire platoon apart from himself and at the end where they are attacking the heavily defended fort. He does not appear to be a very good leader because his tactics loose most if not all of his platoon in both battles. I would only give the movie three stars because of the slow body to the movie.

Summary: Best Civil War-Hollywood-Style film ever!
Review: As President Lincoln credited the men of colour with helping to turn the tide of war so do I credit the makers of this truly exceptional civil war film in helping to turn the tide of filmmaking. Performances are all top notch. Sound and music are pulse-pounding in dolby surround. Battle scenes are recreated with an intensity rivaled only by films such as Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. This is the definitive Civil War film.

If you are aware of the real story behind the 54th Regiment who made the assault on Fort Wagner, then this will bring that story to life. Denzel Washington won a well-deserved Academy Award for his work, and I am surprised that the special effects crew did not win one as well.

Summary: One of the best war epics ever made and a great DVD!
Review: If you'd like a review of the film itself, please check my user profile and scroll down to the VHS review of the film. In short, a great picture that should have won the Best Picture Oscar.

As for the DVD options, although Glory was a film masterpiece, I have not seen many earlier films (ie before DVD) that remastered the DVD version with expanded options unless the movie made money. Glory stops this trend and is well worth the price.

Included are deleted scenes, director's commentary, 2 documentaries, the making of the score, cast/crew bios, Glory and Denzell Washington film trailers and other options.

If you loved the film the first time, the DVD version will not disappoint you. Expanded DVD options to go with a classic film.

Summary: This DVD is superb
Review: Needless to say this movie was top notch in that all the big name actors provided superb role playing and even the not so known actors put out unforgetable performances. I've not watched the extra features disc yet but I expect nothing less than superb after watching this movie.

Summary: Glorious Piece of Filmwork!
Review: Glory is one true extraordinary cinematic story because it brings forth to the modern 20th and 21 century audience of today the struggle of the African American race in the spectrum of war.

This film, an epic tale of how blacks in the Civil War era were racially scrutinized against under the trenches of battle, shows the trials these minority soldiers endured while making a diligent effort to display their worthiness to their white leaders--most of whom felt they were nothing more than lowly slaves and indentured servants.

In the beginning, these black soldiers, known as the 54th regiment, had to prove themselves by initially going through a rigorous manual labor type training program. Obviously not viewed as equals, these African American soldiers were forced to work much harder than their white counterparts in order to realize their respective dreams--fighting for their country in live military action. At first, the dream seemed impossible, but through a diligent work ethic and a little luck, these black soldiers after years and years of racial tension and discrimination, got their chance to battle in real life, warlike duels against the enemy.

What most people will find out after watching Glory is that it certainly is an inspiring film for the ages--a must see for all ethic backgrounds to watch and gain a more vast understanding of past tribulations surrounding your ordinary African American of the time. So for those who haven't seen the movie just yet, take some time out to watch it and see the long journey to independence for the black men who lived then along with the barriers and obstacles they had to overcome to gain respect from their peers and authority figures.

The music is really great in the movie and the characters and events can attract you into the movie greatly. It is a really good Civil War movie and I would recommend it. I rate this move 5 stars. It has a lot of famous actors in it too. Over all, this movie is worth 5 stars and I would watch it if I were you.

Summary: HISTORY LESSON
Review: Powerful film which brought the deserving Denzel Washington an Oscar for best supporting actor. The entire ensemble cast of this deeply moving and scarring film was excellent. I could not help but cry many times in the course of the film. Ultimately what made it so painful was the fact that the events described were true. It is unbelievable to consider the things African-Americans were forced to endure. In the end when the black regiment is forced to march into a situation that is definite suicide and their white commander (a thoughtful Matthew Broderick) not only commands them to do it but also marches into death with them, the imagery is powerful and unforgettable. Yes, this only tells a part of a story, but it is a start, and that is what is most important.
