Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I saw this movie in school, and it made the ever-so-boring global class interesting for a few days. I think it woke some of my classmates up (and me!) about the physical as well as emotional hardships of war. The story is layed out very well, including many facts (that I'll need on a future test!!) and an interesting storyline. I have never had any type of interest in war, but this movie certainly was a wake up call. It was very realistic, and makes people realize that things like war shouldn't be happening.
Rating: Summary: loads of enjoyment Review: It is the greatest war novel, which became one of the greatest war movie. As the fact of better technology than 1930's, this newer virsion of All Quiet on the Western Front sure briught out much more enjoyments as well as th effect to the audiences. This 5 stars of rating is never too much for this awesome war movie/novel.
Rating: Summary: Great emotional movie on war Review: Let's viewers see the human horror of the Great War. Looking for the long version of this movie.
Rating: Summary: An interesting WW1 film through German eyes. Review: Like the 1930 version of this film, All Quiet on the Western Front is about a young German boy, Paul, who eagerly signs up to fight for the "Fatherland" during WW1. During the 4 years he fights in the War, he learns that war is not as heroic as his teacher made it out to be. This movie is very well acted and it is a touching movie, even for a war film. Like the 1930 version, it is an interesting WW1 flim seen through German eyes.
Rating: Summary: Excellent remake! Review: Richard Thomas is believable. The way the movie portrays the realistic aspects of WWI is quite good. While many compare the movie to the book, there is really no comparison. Of course the book is better, but the movie is well worth the time to watch it. I showed it in my 20th Century History class that I teach and the kids thought it wa great! This is a definite "keeper" video for anyone interested in WWI.
Rating: Summary: Best antiwar movie ever made! Review: Thank God there are some people in Holywood who can create masterpieces. It is the first movie ever created with such realism about the horrible WW1. It doesn't have any Rambos killing everybody without even sweating. It is more believable than any other war movie, even if it's only a novel. Maybe because it is seen through the eyes of a German soldier. Who knows! Anyway I recomend this movie to everyone who is tired of watching action heroes combined with ...(true stories)???
Rating: Summary: The abbreviated life of Paul Baumer Review: The movie is an honest attempt to portray the story in the book. However it misses the mark and is highly edited to show evidently what director Delbert Mann and writer Paul Monash [Salem's Lot (1979) (TV)] thought you would want to see and not what Erich Maria Remarque wrote about. Do you remember the scene that Remarque wrote about befriending a cat while enjoying the spoils of protecting the abandoned town? How about the night they crossed the river to meet some girls at their house? The time he faked sick to get off the train and stay with his buddy? No? I wonder why?You are right movies cant be books. But the Lewis Milestones 1930 classic comes a lot closer. It is sort of distraction to see Johnboy playing Paul Baumer. Younger viewers at least wont have that distraction. If this is the only exposure to the story you have then it is masterful. However it is only reflection of the book or other movie versions. If you only taste ersatz coffee you may still drink coffee but you will never know what it is like to drink real coffee that does not say "cinnamon crumb cake" on the label.
Rating: Summary: Good but no greatness! Review: The movie would be much better in it's original widescreen format. The movie does not look that great on DVD. It should have been digitally remastered. Also, the drama inbetween the action scenes can be quite boring. And some good scenes were also edited out unfortunately.
Also, the characters are played by mostly english actors which means the movie was filmed in english instead of german, taking away historical accuracy. I would have rather read subtitles.
It's still OK though!
Rating: Summary: Not the Original TV version Review: The video "All Quiet on the Western Front"is not the original one shown on TV in 1979. It was editted by about 30 minutes. If you ever see the it you will see the difference. The uncut version is much clearer. Examples of editing include the scene with the Kaiser when Himmistoss recieved the metal it is explained why he got the metal in the uncut version.there are other examples mostly dealing with anti war themes sounds funny for an antiwar movie but...............
Rating: Summary: A Classic. Review: This is a fine WWI film. The acting is outstanding. Richard Thomas is excellent as Paul Baum. Ian Holm is also very good as the drill instructor. Ernest Borgnine rounds out the cast of fine acting. Made for television, this film was not eligible for the Oscars but if it were it should have at least garnered a best actor or best director. (War films often do not win best picture) As the other reviews indicate, it does reflect the war from the German perspective. The battle scenes are very well done (even for 1979). It compares with the Razor's Edge. Both films are deep and demonstrate a youthful look at the world turning into the cold cruel reality of war and life itself. Amazon.com is amazing. I have been looking for this film for years. It is a grand film and one of the favorites from my youth.
