Rating: Summary: Essence of Clint Eastwood Review: I grew up on Eastwood movies from his Cowboy era to Dirty Harry and beyond. I have to say this movie is as good in its way as any of the previous. The story has been told many times over of a rough tough unconventional leader shaping up a rag tag misfit group into a cohesive force to be reckoned with. Many times using unconventional or vary conventional ways. Not only in the military field but also many other fields. So it is more the delivery than the story that one would want to watch this movie for. Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) facing retirement and trying to cope with a failed marriage and ex wife is tasked with turning a rag tag bunch of individuals into marines. He is hampered by self glorification self credit seeking people on all sides. If he fails many will die. So will he succeed and if so at what cost?
Rating: Summary: from a marine Review: a lot of the other reviews say clint over did the gunnery sergeant role, i disagree as a marine myself he did an outstanding job as a lifer gysgt that believes in the marine corps. he believed things should be as the corps meant them to be, the men should be discipline now as they were in bootcamp. times change not the corps or its values so he whipped his men back into that shape using whatever it took including whipping their butts. the language was realistic people do use that language in the corps sometimes thats the only thing young knuckleheads hear. its not always needed but some older men like gunnys use it to prevent using their hands this is an awesome movie. my favorite is calling for fire with a credit card call to the camp lejeune operator, you try this today youll get a recording press 1 for this press 2 for that.GUNNY HIGHWAY reminds me of one of my old gunnys.
Rating: Summary: Adapt, Overcome... Review: Easily one of my favourite movies of all time, though I should qualify it as strictly a GUY film. I place it up there with "Road House" for sheer mindless entertainment value mixed with a serviceable script, brisk pace, great one-liners, and enough cliches to sink a battleship. It doesn't get 4 stars from me for trying to be high art--just a contract-fulfilling actioner from Clint that meshes well with the '80s and his whole career up to now. Strictly by-the-numbers, but with a great supporting cast.
Rating: Summary: no doubt, it's one of clint's best. Review: It's amazing. Big performance from clint and also mario van peebles. Clint is a tough marine sergeant who is close to retire and dedicades his whole life to marine corps. Now he has a new platoon which is full of undisciplined marines, some of them even do not speak english well. But he is an idealist and he will train this unit although the rest of the men against him. The way he acts is very funny and he is foul-mouthed. There are lot's of amazing scenes and funny chat between characters. A must have for all clint fans!

Rating: Summary: Funny and Entertaining with a War Story on the Side Review: I don't take this movie as seriously as Saving Private Ryan, for example, but I don't think the movie takes itself so seriously, either. In fact, it is pretty darn funny in a subtle way. There is enough variety of characters as comic relief to overcome any factual inaccuracies in the film. It is the classic "New commander whips the boys into shape" story.
Rating: Summary: Eastwood's best character Review: Unfortunately, not his best film to go along with the tailor made Gunny Highway persona. Clint is in rare form and the one liners are hilarious. Well worth the watch even as irritating as Mario Van Peebles and Marsha Mason are as Eastwood's undisciplined anti-Marine and his completely used up trailer trash ex-wife. But maybe that's what they were going for? A sequel would have been fun without all these silly distractions. 3 shell casings.
Rating: Summary: MARIO'S MUSCLES DOMINATE! Review: Yeah I know Eastwood's always good but I rushed to get my handson this from Amazon.com to keep tabs on Mario Van Peebles's everchangin' 'muscular splendor.' Tho not lookin' nearly as good ashe does in SOLO, there's alot to like here. Peebles treats us toone 'shirtless scene' after another or so it seems. He's gotta be high on the list of BEST BLACK BODS gracin' stage & screentoday. Here we get him in ever-flexin' glory as one of a handfulof recruits doin' their best to wear Eastwood down with their non-conformity. You see he's the drill seargent. The movie is ajoy to watch anyway with its solid storyline & quite amusingdialogue. Must confess however that after watchin it once, Iactivated the zoom feature of my player & zeroed in on everygorgeous inch of Mr. Mario's torso. Doubt they come any better 'cut & chiseled' than this & to think he still wasn'tsatisfied with 'his look' & bulked up even more for laterroles. Why not TAKE A GANDER- it's not like Eastwood's absenthere tho I'm pretty sure he never removes his shirt to showoff his equally well-publicised physique!
Rating: Summary: evohnav is an ... Review: You are wrong. It was Marines, not the piddling army, that inveded Grenada. You are thinking of Panama. Second, the Marines GySgt Highway was in charge of were NOT recruits. They were RECON MARINES. Get it right or get out. This is a good war movie and Marines everywhere love it. So what if it was originally going to be an army movie. This movie, at times, shows the spirit of the United States Marine Corps, the finest fighting force on the planet. Nobody has anything on the Corps.
Rating: Summary: Stereotyped, but enjoyable Review: This movie is so over-the-top it's very enjoyable. To me, anyway. I haven't been in the army (or the marines) and I'm fortunate enough to live in a country that hasn't been at war for decades. Therefore, from my neutral point of view, I have really had a great time watching this movie. Clint Eastwood's portrayal of Gunnery-Sergeant Highway is overdone, and therefore a treat to watch. Also, catch Everett McGill as Major Powers, absolutely unlikable in this part. Always thought he was a great actor! This movie has something in common with "Full Metal Jacket". Both movies start off on one foot and seem to end on another. The bad part about this is both movies start off better than they end. Don't get me wrong, I like this movie, I really do. But I always seem to loose interest in it after the training-part comes to finish, and end up switching the movie off after about an hour. And I suppose it's for good reasons.
