Summary: Outstanding; still moving after 1981; unbelievable
Review: It is difficult to express how I feel about this film. My stepfather was in the Royal Canadian Navy, on Convoy duty, aboard the HMSC Agassiz. My father-in -law was in the Axis Navy, sunk twice in the Mediterranean. Prochnow was outstanding; the most outstanding performance I have ever seen - laconic, but the essence of leadership. I am sure I have every line, German and English, memorized. I never fail to be moved by "Good men .....you have to have good men .. all of them', and "280 metres, and she is still is one piece ..the merciful God has left us a shovelful of sand to keep us up." A day does not go by, when I am influenced, in some way by this film.

Summary: superb; Prochnow is the consummate leader & hero
Review: Prochnow's performance inspires leadership and courage. No motion picture artist has every inspired work ethic and survival to the degree that he did in this performance. "Good men, all of them; you have to have good men" sums it up - uplifting, and a triumph of the human spirit.

Summary: great!!!
Review: I was totally blown away by the directors cut of das boot. The thing that is so amazing about the film is that you really identify with the germans. The direction, editing, sound quality is superb. The script is also great. Watch it in german for better effect. It has everything you could want in a movie; Romance, adventure, comedy, and horror. I highly recommend it.

Summary: A classic German movie
Review: This movie is truly a classic. I had never seen this movie before in the years it's been released until a year or so ago. I bought the VHS version of the director's cut first. The DVD is better. It's great to be able to see a movie about World War II dealing with the German perspective. The sound effects are great, the acting is top notch, and the director's commentary is truly a treat to listen to while viewing the movie. The music also fits the movie all the way. Never have seen the older version before the director's cut and don't plan to. Definitely recommended.

Summary: Great DVD but a pain flipping the disk
Review: This is one of the best examples of where DVD excels. You can watch the original German with subtitles or in dubbed English. A riveting story that makes you appreciate life beneath the waves. Only problem was having to turn the disk over and side A up meant side B was playing (strange).

Summary: Don't buy it
Review: This so called "Director's Cut" is a travesty. Wait for the originally released version. It is far better

Summary: Unbelievable masterpiece of film-making!!!
Review: I'm 22-year old girl and i've never ever seen a more fascinating movie! At the end i cried and so did my dad. "das Boot" shows war from the side of the loosers and so it does't need all this boring patriotic heroism, which has nothing to do with the reality of war! The story is so credible and the actors are excellent. Juergen Prochnow is simply a dream! (*g*)

Summary: Intense!
Review: The scenes of the U-Boat riding the Atlantic swells are magnificent and the story makes for a highly entertaining film. "Das Boot" also makes you thankful for fresh air!
