Rating: Summary: Good movie- what more can I say? Review: I saw this movie today, in fact I just got home. Although I am not a fan of romance movies, I liked this one. It was wonderfully directed and shot, the acotrs were believable (especially Cage as Captain Corelli), and the script wasn't hokey. The music in this movie really complemented what was happening on the screen. My compliments to whoever wrote the score for this movie. Not to mention it had that really neat invasion scene near the end of the movie. As this movie has been out for a little while, it shouldn't be overly crowded. So, if you want to see a really good movie without the opening week-end mobs, go see this. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Really Good, But Doesn't Deserve 5 Stars Review: I recently saw this in the theaters, after a week of delicious anticipation, and left the movie with mixed feelings. Part of me really likes this movie, but another part says that it could have been done much better.Cage was great, and although some may have a problem with his accent, I found it pretty good and quite appealing. Penelope Cruz seemed to be reprising her role from "All the Pretty Horses", as the lonely only child of a respected man in a small town who falls in love with someone she shouldn't, then gets left behind after disasterous circumstances. With the noted difference that this movie was a lot more interesting then "Horses". Still, she's good, and doesn't take anything away from the film. John Hurt is wonderful as her aging doctor father, despensing wisdom to his townfolk at every turn. Strangely believable, even though his character wasn't quite human, as he didn't seem to have any flaws that I could pick out. Christian Bale is great, and adds wonderful talent to the movie. He's three demensional, dinamic, and you don't really know whether or not you like him until the end. Even then, his fate is left hanging, and you feel cheated. It's almost as if his was the only character worth following in any great length. I'm sure that his story would have made a great film. Don't expect another "Shakespeare in Love", because it's no where near as good, but it's worth seeing a few times.
Rating: Summary: Cage was not believable Review: I was disappointed in this movie overall. Cage did not work as an italian. The scenes of him playing the mandolin showed him "acting." The characters were not developed in the movie. You know nothing about them and are expected to be moved by their love for each other? The best part of the movie is the breathtaking beauty of the island. The characters and the story were flat.
Rating: Summary: Read the book... miss the flick! Review: The movie, while rich in cinematography with a beautiful score, disppoints endlessly. The characters are thrown at you, with no introduction. The acting is pathetic at times, with Penelope Cruz yet to master speaking english, Nicolas Cage lacking the charm of the book's character, and Mandras (Bale) taking on a role that is so different from the book the story is completely changed, and only for the worse. The movie begins half way through the original story, and differs so dramatically, one can only be disappointed. Read the book, you will LOVE it, skip the movie... 100% let down!
Rating: Summary: One of the years best film Review: I had the privelidge to watch the entire film at AMC theatre in Amherst NY. It was a special screening of the film before it will be release. The film is primarily a love story, set in a Greece island during World War 2. The story is a bit complicated but it carried a message. Live your life to the fullest. Even during the worst of times. Well done John Madden, Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruze and the rest of the cast for making this marvolous film
Rating: Summary: Crow'd Pleasing Entertainment Review: I can guarantee that there's always someone reading the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin. I'd also bet that everyone who's read it would not believe they could make it into a film. I also thought that, but wasn't dissapointed in the least bit. Set on the island of Cephalonia, Mandolan tells the love story between Pelagia (Penny Cruz) and Captain Antonio Corelli (Cage), set against the unfolding story of WW2. It changes elements of the book (as it had to), but for the good and is shot intelligently, sympathetically and beautifully, with some marvellous performances - John Hurt being a notable. OK, so it doesn't tell the book word for word and it distorts some of the original history, but it looks wonderful, is engaging and very emotional. Go see, even if you do think, 'They'll never make it as well as the book.' I doubt it will be an Oscar winner, but it is definately one of the best film's I've seen this summer (which is not saying much actually).
Rating: Summary: Early release in France Review: I saw this film in Paris since it opened there June 20th and I loved it. I have been urged to read the book, which I have yet to do, but my aunt who has read the book and saw the movie with me said it followed the book closely until the end which they were forced to cut short. Pelagia's father is so wise and I think all the main actors were very good. My aunt said she couldn't see Nicolas Cage as Captain Corelli after reading the book, but she was very pleased with his performance. I really did like this film, so go and see it! lol

Rating: Summary: This movie looks like it will be another hit!!! Review: I love Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz I think they both amazing actors and actresses. I would recommend this one for people to see, the book is wonderful too. I would read the book if I were you because there will be parts of the book that will not be in the movie.
Rating: Summary: History and love mixing like in real life Review: I have not seen the movie yet, but I read the book by De Bernieres and the book about the making of the movie. I am looking forward to see it. It is a story that even in Italy few people know; not my case as my father who was the mayor of Turbigo, a village near Milano used to tell me, since I was 6 years old, that the officer in charge of delivering mail for him was one of the few people of the the Aqui division, that returned alive from Cefalonia. His name is Mr. Colombo and he did hide for 3 days under a pile of dead bodies, thus managing to return home. But before he had spent 3 years prisoner in Austria where he had the doubtful honour of being kicked in the back by Kurt Waldheim, then a petty SS officer and later ONU secretary general and president of Austria. He was kicked because he was picking up a carrot without permission, then Waldheim asked him to clean his shoes. Mr. Colombo is still alive at 83. Kind of story of capt. Corelli. I liked the book but I hope that in the movie they will not tone down the truth about the communist partisans of Greece, more interested to fight their own countrimen than the invaders. The same situation happened in Italy, but it is still a tabu'. After the war was over on the 25th of April 1945, they carried out their own personal revenges, very often on defenceless civilians under the eyes of the allied troops. Nobody counted those dead in Italy, but they are probably hundred of thousand. For this reason the book of de Bernieres has been translated by a small publishing house and it sold few copies in Italy. It has been criticised by former communists partisans, among them one who wrote "Bandiera Bianca at Cefalonia" a former member of the PCI, italian communist party. But the news that the book has sold hundred of thousands of copies abroad and a movie with Nicholas Cage was in the making has forced the president of the Italian Republic, Mr. Ciampi, a first time for an italian politician, to visit Cefalonia and honour those forgotten dead, by laying flower on the monument remembering them.
