Summary: "The Color Purple" Shines Like The Color Gold
Review: This is one of those rare instances where I actually liked the movie better than the book. With a combination of Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey, how can you lose? While the movie won no awards (and was hardly nominated) come Oscar time, the audience won just by having this movie to watch. Beautifully acted, artfully directed and photographed, and wonderfully scored by John Williams, this film takes us on a triumphant journey of the human spirit more than most films in recent memory.

Summary: It's better every time you see it
Review: Rarely has a movie been so unfairly maligned as this one. Speilberg's cinematic translation of Alice Walker's novel is not perfect, but it does work beautifully. Strong, believable performances come forth from every actor in every scene. Unless you're from the Chicago area, this was probably your first look at Oprah Winfrey (who really should try to find the time to do more acting). And, of course, this was the film debut of Whoopi Goldberg (and to this day it's still her performance; she should have won the Oscar for which she was nominated).

In short, you'll love it!

Summary: The most TOUCHING movie of all time!!
Review: There is not a movie in this whole world that moved me more than "The Color Purple". It is an instant classic. Spielberg made great character developments and characteristics, unlike the uninspired characters from his other movies, such as Saving Private Ryan. The women of the movie were absolutely UNFORGETTABLE. Whoopi Goldberg gives the performance of the lifetime as the shy, abused, and mistreated Celie. This is the finest screen debut ever!! Oprah Winfrey was heartbreaking as the strong Sophia. Margaret Avery gives an outstanding dramatic and musical performance as the singer Shug Avery, who were only one of the few people that cared about Celie. These 3 women were all nominated for an Academy Award for these performances. Whoopi- Best Actress, Oprah And Margaret Avery for their suporting roles. This film was tied with "Out of Africa" as the film with the most nominations coming to the 1985 Academy Awards (11 nominations each). But it was the ultimate shut out in oscar history. First of all, director Steven Spielberg wasn't even nominated as its director, after winning the prestigious Director's Guild Awards, but was nominated for Best Picture. Second, The Color Purple didn't even receive a single award out of its great feat of 11 nominations. Out of Africa won the award that year, which was undeserving in The Color Purple's presence, similar to this year's Oscars when Shakespeare in Love won instead of the far greater "Saving Private Ryan" (which is also Steven Spielberg's film). But unlike Shakespeare in Love, Out of Africa was a great masterpiece, but not as great as The Color Purple. This film is a must see. It will make you cry every single time you see it.

Summary: WHOOPI AT HER BEST!!!
Review: This is one of Whoopi Goldberg's best films. I have seen it at least 10 times and cry everytime. There aren't that many movies that can have this type of effect on me. From Shug Avery's stirring rendition of "God's Trying To Tell You Something" to the final showdown between Celia and Mister, this is a great example of what good films are supposed to be about.

Summary: good but lacks punch
Review: Goldberg did an outstanding job. However, if you wanna see a slow pace, depressed movie this one's for you.

Summary: Wonderful film, but...
Review: This is a wonderful film, and I was looking forward to the DVD version. Perhaps I got it too early in the history of DVD, as my copy has the film on two sides. Hopefully, there will be newer pressings of this film with a single-sided, dual-layer version. That would make this film perfect. Five stars for the film; minus one star for the interruption.

Summary: beautiful, heart-wrenching film
Review: The Color Purple is a wonderful film, full of beautiful cinamatography, complex characters, and emotional rollercoasters. From the opening scene of two sisters in a field of purple flowers to the african savanna to the rolling fields of Georgia, this film is almost tangible. The character development is intriuging. I loved watching Celie on her road of self-discovery, and the people she met along the way. Every time I watch this movie I cry for her; I cry in happiness when Shug's father hugs her, I cry in dispair when Nettie is torn from Celie's life, I cry in joy when Shug sings "Miss Celie's Blues." Everyone should give this movie a chance, for it is truely unique.

Summary: Truly a movie that won't be forgotten
Review: I can never hold back my tears everytime I watch this movie. The ending is very predictable, but, what an ending! I can't believe this movie lost to the boring "Out of Africa!" I may sound partial, but so what! It's MY review!

Summary: THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME.
Review: this movie made me sleep. I dont recommend this piece of crap. Having trouble sleeping, watch this movie and you will go to dreamland. They should change the title to The Color of monotony.
