Summary: CHINESE and FICTION - not for the stereotypic American
Review: Flying fighters, misterious characters who have a very fuzzy background. Altogether, it lacks the usual rationality even Western mythical stories have. Yes. If you've ever read a single Chinese tale, then you know that irrational behaviour, fuzzy illogical background and actions (from the _Western_ point of view) is a normal occurrence in these. Yes. It is quite normal for them to have such stories. A several thousand year old culture is based on it, meaning more than a billion people, one sixth of Earth's population. This movie has a very heavy _authentic_ Chinese influence in several aspects. Watch it as a fairy tale. It is a beautiful one. Even if it is not 100% rational. (Why is it have to be anyway?)

Summary: I don't know what we all missed
Review: But the whole theater was LAUGHING at the special effects, the cheesy "romance", the 60's "find yourself" depth, the corny story-line. There was NOTHING in this movie that would make me recommend it for Best Movie?? Hah! The new Star Wars was much better, and a better legend to boot, and I didn't even like it!! Maybe I missed something, but I recommend against seeing this silly tripe, unless you realize you're going to see a poor imitation of the Matrix / Star Wars / Shakespearean tragedy.

Summary: Big Disappointment
Review: I went into this movie expecting alot, after hearing it was one of the greatest movies of all time. By the time it was finished I was greatly disapointed. I had fallen asleep twice during the movie which I found very boring. Everyone raves about the incrediable fight scenes with people flying and running up walls, but I can tell you this I've seen the same thing at least ten other times in other Korean and Chinese films. Nothing spectacular here.

Summary: Wo hu cang long
Review: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of those rare films that has earned its praise. Ang Lee's traumatic production has resulted in one of the greatest films ever made. Lyrical and beautiful, no other example of the Martial Arts genre has such emotional resonance, and few contain fight sequences that even approach the artistry achieved here. While most Americans are only familiar with these elements from The Matrix, that film, only hints at what is proven possible by Woo-Ping and the cast of Crouching Tiger. Successful on every level, this masterpiece should satisfy nearly anyone with taste.

Summary: One of the best of the year
Review: This year really wasn't too great for movies.. This is an exception though, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon still remains a great movie through everything. It has it all, a pretty good plot, a dying romance, and action to die for.

Battle scenes remind me much of The Matrix and such.. About buying the DVD, I found the movie itself was great, worth owning, but what really put it over the top to own was the wonderful scenery, amazing cinematography which makes this a must buy for DVD.

The DVD is not out yet however, and won't be for some time now.. *My friend* told me that a Region Free Official DVD release can be found on ebay for around 30 dollars. *My friend* actually bought his own copy and I watched it on *his* DVD player. It's loaded with special features, and it's got english tracks (for those subtitle haters), and the original track.. So if you want it, go to ebay, it's all authentic, imported from Singapore, some US residents imported it and have it for sale. They're not cheap, they're 100% official. :)

Summary: crouching tiger hidden dragon
Review: Simply said, this is the first movie with subtitles that I have ever seen, where I felt that it was completely effortless to read, watch and enjoy all at the same time. Great action scenes mixed with beautiful scenery and a quality storyline.

Summary: wow!!
Review: im a big fan of the starwars movies, my personal best movies ever and also quite a big fan of the matrix, i had seen the trailers for crouching tiger, hidden dragon and thought that it looked like the kind of film i would watch. so at last it was released here in england. i went to see it, not expecting it to be as good as i have heard people were saying it was. after the movie finished i sat and watched all the credits, when the lights began to rise at the theatre i got up and walked out, without saying a word. we (i was with my mum who also heard it was supposed to be a good movie) got outside and i turned to my mum, and just said 3 words. 'better than starwars'.

since the day i saw it, everytime i think about it, i get this feeling in my stomach. i dont know whether thats because i think zhang zi yi is fine or the movie just has that effect on people, or just me. to finish, this movie is breath-taking. breath-taking enough it could kill you.

Summary: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Treasure
Review: Being as I'm Irish and extremely stubborn, I hate to admit when I'm wrong but in two prior reviews I referred to American Psycho as "the best movie of the early 21st century," and of Gladiator's Oscar hopes I proclaimed it would be "a more than worthy recipient." As it turns out I must recant both of these statements because as of the date they were written I had yet to see the Ang Lee masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's a film so exquisite that to compare it to even the best of our American movies would be downright insulting.

Chow Yun-Fat stars as a legendary warrior preparing for retirement, presumably to settle down and start a family with the sister of his slain master Shu Lien (Michelle Yoeh). And though their love for eachother is obvious from on the onset, they can't quite summon the courage to speak of their hidden passion. So Lu Mu Bai (Yun-Fat), unalbe to express himself to Lien, entrusts her with a sacred sword that's to be passed on to a friend, symbolic of his retirement from rouge life. She willingly obliges only to have the sword stolen that very night by a masked intruder. It's then that we're treated to our first of many fight sequences, so breathtakingly fluent in their beauty that they are literally awe inspiring.

Our masked intruder is later revealed to us as being the daughter to the governor, Jen, whose martial arts training has been repressed by her family because of her sex. Despite this she finds training from Jade Fox, a corrupt disciple of Bai's master whose death he's sworn to avenge, as is customary in their culture. So the battle lines are drawn, from which the story unfolds, but Lee doesn't bother labeling his characters as "good guys" and "bad guys." It's almost insulting to even suggest, given how multifaceted they all are.

Even Jade Fox has her reasons for being as she is. The daughter of a sexist society, she was denied training, as was Jen. So she in turn taught herself, secretly observing until her skills were such that she enabled herself to take the life of Bai's master. To her it seemed a fitting demise to a man who saw women as inferior to himself, and all men for that matter.

As the story continues to unfold we come to discover that Jen had an affair with a theif whom she'd met while he and his gang were robbing her. Being as she's such a great warrior, she gives chase to the gang but their leader, Lo, wants her to himself. He leads her out into the desert to spar, and it's through their fighting that they're able to express themselves. As they trade blows their relationship materializes into love, their quarreling an unspoken courtship.

Romance, honor, self-respect, female empowerment. These are universal themes, the power of which can be felt even without subtitles. The actors faces, which are so expressive, combined with the movies score tells the story as well as any of it's dialogue. This is important because the rhythmic flow of their exchanges are so absorbing that I'd catch myself getting lost in the moment and forgetting to read the subtext. But that doesn't diminish my appreciation for a film so engrossing that it seemingly transports you to a time and a place the likes of which you've likely never experienced before.

What I find most amazing about this movie is the fact that it's adapted from an obscure Chinese novel. To think that their heritage is so rich that one of the greatest love stories in the history of literature can nearly be lost forever is simply mind boggling.

It's been a humbling task for me to attempt and write a review to a movie which there are no words to describe, at least none that would do it proper justice. All I can say is that I consider myself lucky to have seen a movie as intensely satisfying as Crouching Tiger come along in my lifetime. Go see this movie!

Summary: Zhang Ziyi rules my world!!
Review: Please do not miss this film. If for no other reason, see it for the actress Zhang Ziyi. She's just awesome! It's a crime that Zhang wasn't nominated for an Oscar. She gives, without a doubt, the best performance of any actress or actor this year. I've seen all five movies nominated for best picture and Crouching Tiger is by far the best. In no small part due to Zhang Ziyi. She rocks!!

Summary: This one proves indie films are the best!
Review: This movie was one of the BEST I've ever seen! The subtitles are easy to read, and keep a modern, easy dialogue, and Michelle Yeoh was great as the grounded, calm, but very skilled warrior woman :) MUST SEE!
