Summary: You'll Have to Push the Pram-A-Lot...
Review: Richard Gere stars as an American Lancelot in King Arthur's court. Sean Connery dodders around as King Arthur and Julia Ormond... well, she looks pretty as Guinevere. But that's all she's required to do here. They make a boring trio- but poor Connery's the most boring: he gets all the dialogue about justice and honor and everything Camelot stands for... which, apparently consists of wearing matching blue uniforms and carrying torches. And being a good citizen and having no personality.

Oh yeah- and what happens to the boring guy in a love triangle? If you don't know the answer to that one, then "First Knight" is the medieval film for you- because it contains nothing medieval whatsoever. For those of you who want a movie to make you feel like there was a reason you chose to see it, rather than staying home and trimming your sideburns while watching a "Full House" rerun... well, you won't enjoy it.

The only person allowed any personality is Ben Kingsley as Malagant- a character who replaces Mordred in the story- and that's because he's the bad guy and you're SUPPOSED to hate him. In the original tales, Arthur fathers Mordred with his own half-sister and this sets up Camelot's fall and Arthur's death. Evidently, paricide and incest are too controversial for Jerry Zucker and his safer-than-milksop movie. I can see how these themes might offend the middle-of-the-road movie-goers. Too bad no one worries about offending people who actually like good movies.

Of course, since they dumped all the religious and mystical stuff and aimed the movie at people who don't know anything about King Arthur, why not call Malagant Mordred anyway? Or why not call King Arthur Dudley McKinney and set the story in the Bronx, or in a lighthouse or on the moon? Or better yet, replace the actors with sock puppets and save their giant salaries. Donate the money to libraries so they can buy the unfinished John Steinbeck translation of "Le Morte D'Arthur," or T.H. White's "The Once and Future King."

Why'd they make a version of the Arthurian legend minus anything remotely legendary? I don't know. I don't want to know. But I do know I never want to see this movie again. Instead, I'll be watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

Summary: I Dub Thee Sir Lancelot, Richard Gere
Review: Ah, the knight in shining armor, doth thy Richard Gere play, and play he, his lady fair, well...Sean Connery is no slouch either. Excellent acting and action packed movie... It has all the ingredients for a romance and enough action and war to keep any man busy watching, too. Hmmm, someone stole my video so alas, I am here buying another one. I have not met anyone who has seen First Knight that has not loved the movie. Enjoy. ~Teresa King

Summary: Gere and Guinevere :)
Review: First Knight is an adaptation of the original Camelot legend. If you first fell in love with the character of Lancelot, as I did at thirteen, you may remember the musical of 1967 called Camelot. If you remember "If Ever I Would Leave You" or "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight," you will not find any singing in this movie. This is a much more serious look at life in Camelot and the surrounding lands.

What you might find is an ending which perhaps makes more sense, but is in fact not as tragic as one would expect. I will not spoil the ending for you. If you have seen the 1967 version, then you will enjoy comparing the two movies. I highly suggest you see both. It will be great fun to see the 1967 version if you love musicals. It will be so romantic to see this 1995 version if you enjoy seeing Richard Gere's acting (he is at his sexiest in this movie). I am also a Sean Connery fan and loved the fact that he and Richard were in the same movie. How would a girl decide when you give her the choice between two of the sexiest men in movies! Both Gere (Sir Lancelot) and Sean (King Arthur) gave one of their best acting performances.

There are many fight scenes, which are not gory and are only to show the fight between the evil Prince Malagant and the good King Arthur. Prince Malagant is jealous of King Arthur's land of peace and justice. He leaves Camelot and the land is divided. This sets up the theme for good and evil. King Arthur must choose to stand by his convictions or compromise. What he chooses decides his fate.

Julia Ormond plays a deep, thoughtful Lady Guinevere who truly does love King Arthur, but it undeniably and hopelessly drawn to Sir Lancelot. She is just lovely in this movie with her braided hair and innocent nature. She chooses country over passion. I absolutely adored her portrayal of Guinevere. The yellow rose petals at her marriage are very significant. Her medieval costumes and the scenes of her riding horses in the forests are not to be missed.

The cinematography was excellent and the sweeping views of the English countryside could not have been better. Camelot looked magical and throughout the movie "fire" lent authenticity to the time period. The deep forests and misty scenes are just so wonderful. You will love the castle and excellent swordsmanship.

If you love the acting of Richard Gere, Julia Ormond and Sean Connery, don't miss out on this movie.

Review: By writing this review, I must say I'm doing it with the noblest of purposes: to warn you all tho keep well away from this farce, the complete destruction of Arthurian legend in one of the most commercial filsm ever produced by Hollywwod. After saying that, I consider my mission completed.

Summary: First Knight - a ridiculous travesty
Review: This film is a laughable "adaptation" of a truly remarkable legend...it exemplifies Hollywood's deplorable habit of dumbing-down and trivializing history and mythology. To call this film sentimental bilge is to be far too kind...For a lovely and far more accurate account of the Arthurian legends read the french poet - Chretien De Troyes' - medieval romances.

Summary: Gere good, Connery better.
Review: The film "First Knight," was just an "ok" movie. Richard Gere does a decent job playing Lancelot. He maybe is too much of a pretty boy to be playing a rugged loner. His style of acting doesn't really fit his character. I'm used to seeing him in "Pretty Woman" which he plays a nice guy. Sean Connery on the other hand, can play any part he wants to, because he is Sean Connery. His style and the parts he play can't be imitated or limited. He does an excellent job oof portraying King Arthur. The plot of the movie is very good. Malagant is the vilian in the movie. In the middle of the movie he captures lady Guinevere. Lancelot soon steals her back. Then Malagant comes back to haunt Camelot again. His men shoot and eventually kill King Arthur, but in a bloody battle Lancelot fights and kills Malagant on the King's throne. This shows a little symbolism, and leaves you thinking what if Malagant was supposed to be a king. It ends with Lancelot winning the girl and Arthur dying a noble death.

Summary: "First Knight" Shines Bright
Review: Camelot has captured the romantic attentions of many arduous fans throughout the years. And who could resist Julia Ormand, Richard Gere, and Sean Connery as a cast of bright stars revealing a modernized version of King Arthur?

One of my favorite scenes in this rich and textural film is when Richard Gere (Lancelot) quenches Julia Ormands (Lady Guinevere)thirst by sensually contriving a waterfall of vibrant green leaves dripping onto each lower leaf and falling deep into her parched throat.

You may think you have read and seen enough about Camelot. Trust me, in this version, we learn more about Lancelots background, his inner demons and pleasures.

Just a glorious adventurous romantic film.

Thanks for your interest & comments--CDS

Summary: It's no Excalibur but still a good film.
Review: First Knight is a interesting retelling of the classic Aurthorian legends without any magic. Almost all the actors especially Connery do excellent jobs in their roles and the films high production values help bring Camelot alive. Richard Gear is bad choice for Lancelot but doesn't detract from the films overall presentation. The only downside to the film is the corny love story between Lancelot and Guinivere.
