Summary: Host segments
Review: I agree that these shorts are pretty lame. The name of the other host is Jason J. Tobin, who recently appeared in "Better Luck Tomorrow" and also starred in "Yellow."

Summary: Laugh out loud funny
Review: I cannot believe these short films are considered "good" by ANYBODY! They're horrible! I think the worst one is the one with the guy licking his arm. That's all he does. That's all you see. Just a man licking his own arm for about 3min. Another terrible one is with two guys and a girl playing some kind of running game with each other. They take turns running in front of each other. I don't understand why kids are playing Playstation 2 when they can take turns running in front of each other! The ONLY thing that saves this DVD is the very funny guys who introduce the films. Even they seem to think they're stupid. I'd like to see a film with the two funny guys.

Review: I read the reviews and bought the DVD thinking that it would serve as a back drop to a party. These movie shorts are very dark. I don't think the comic interlude used to tie the films together serves to lighten the tone at all.

I would not recommend this DVD if you are looking for entertainment.

The movie shorts could be used in a liberal class setting or as a dicussion of sub-altern counter culture sexual conflict.

Summary: Slick and Sexy
Review: Let's face it, there are a lot of gay boy short compilations out there. Personally, I look for good storytelling with sexy actors. Boys Briefs not only has 6 good tales with attractive casts, but it also has two West Hollywood "hotties" working as MTV-like hosts. You can watch them present the entire show, adding bits of ad-libbed humor and commentary, or you can pick out the individual shorts and watch them one at a time. One of these hosts, Michael Saucedo, plays "Juan" on General Hospital. How cool is that, that he offered to host a gay boy short compilation? The other host, Jason, is pretty cute, although I don't know what else he has done. I would recommend Boys Briefs wholeheartedly.

Review: Very disappointing! Not one of the short stories was enjoyable. I don't understand how people can call this art. "The Absolution of Anthony" was the best of the lot. "Smear" was stupid. "Front Room" billed as "the two most erotic minutes ever filmed" was not only not erotic at all but the biggest "nothing" I have ever seen. "Fairy Tale" was at least an attempt at some sort of a storey, but failed miserably at creating any sympathetic characters. "Piglets" was a nonsensical mess. "Stanley beloved" was just very poor.

Summary: Eclectic collection of gay short cinema
Review: Well the idea is always good -- showcasing short cinema, in this case with a common theme of young gay men coming to terms with their sexuality. Yet, as with nearly every short film collection, some of the installments are great, some are pretty lousy.

"Smear" is as confused as is the protagonist (at least I think he was the protagonist). "Front Room" is a gimmick that is more akin to something a high-school student would do in the privacy of his bedroom.

"The Absolution of Anthony" is good, especially with a cast that includes Victor Garber (of "Titanic" fame). "Stanley Beloved" is even better, but the ending is so unresolved and the characters so underdeveloped, I found it hard to care for it beyond the limited scope.

"Fairy Tale," while second-best here, is a bit uneven and I thought some of the characters were broadly-drawn and stereotypical, but there is some real depth to the plot and the dialogue. Like any short story or short film, it is difficult to keep the pace up without feeling rushed. This one handles it pretty well, with a few fits and starts that frustrated me. Still and all, among the dramatic pieces here, it was the most emotionally satisfying given the genre.

BEST BY FAR is "Piglets." I haven't laughed out loud like that in quite a while. The bizarre situations and characters made me watch this one over and over. I like the pantomime aspect of it, it is a German production, which lends a universal feel to it all. Kudos!

I'm renting Boys Briefs 2 soon -- let's see if our fortunes improve a bit...
