Rating: 2 stars
Summary: 2 1/2 stars for this because of Kurt Russell...
Review: With such high ratings here on Amazon.com and from what sounded like a good movie I was expecting much more than I got from Winter People. Kurt Russell has made some great and some entertaining movies over the years, The Thing, Escape From New York, Overboard, Backdraft, Umlawful Entry, Tombstone, Stargate etc, but this I found neither great nor entertaining. I was waiting for the big confrontation or shoot out that had been hinted at on the back cover "But their idyllic situation is brutally and violently disrupted when Cole Campbell- the drunkard father of Collie's son- shows up to reclaim his place in his son's life" that never happens. Kurt Russell is the only good thing in this and his performance is the only reason I got to the end. It's not a bad movie, just that it's a little boring and predictable with the standard happy hollywood ending tagged on at the end which for me was pretty obvious. This is simply a slow burning not very well done drama with typical characters we have seen in many movies before with a predictable slow last hour with little or no violence apart from one or two fist fights. The final outcome of the movie actually detracts from what has all come before and left me thinking what was the point in it all. As for the performance of the actor playing the youngest Wright brother who sports a blond 80's mullett, he was just terrible in the role and really took away from the actors in his scenes and the movie as a whole. Every time he was on screen it was embarrassing. This DVD will happily sit in my Kurt Russell collection gathering dust and probably never to be watched again.
