Rating: Summary: Wow! Great actors all in one movie! Review: I can understand why great actors such as these would want to play parts like this. This is called ACTING -- total involvement. Each character was so totally different, you couldn't wait to see what they were up to next. Sean Penn is excellent as always, always the fine, young actor, intense and good at whatever he puts his mind to. He personally got me nervous with all that coke he snorted every few seconds. Could have done without that! Chazz Palminteri (from a Bronx Tale) played a very intense actor, kind of a spaced-out look about him. The most "normal" one -- if I can use that word -- was Kevin Spacey's character - even with the blond hair! Which happened to look well on him anyway. Amazing how he can transform his appearance in each and every picture he plays! His acting is always great -- intense eyes, great smirks and expressions, hand movements, etc. Good acting by all in the film!
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Is there a better actor around today than Kevin Spacey? If there is, I don't know who he is. Spacey has to be the coolest actor in movies. He is amazing in this movie, as is Sean Penn - he is a much better actor than I had thought. He's incredible, as is the whole cast. The thing I love about this movie is there are only about 10 speaking parts. The dialogue drives the movie, and Spacey and Penn do the film as much justice as any two actors could.
Rating: Summary: Art. Review: This is a great movie. It is art. The movie speaks for itself. It has a life of its own. It is truly a work of art. It is not perfection, as nothing is. It is a piece of life. It is entertaining. It is funny, violent, sad, meaninful. There are no necessary comparisons to be made. We know these actors have other work under their belts. This is what artists live for. Dramatic as it may be, I hope others can share with me the joy of watching a work of this nature. If you don't see the value, maybe you are simply looking to be entertained. That's fine for most movies, but this one is something else entirely. Please don't try to topple this movie, its too good, too honest for that. If you want to be critical, I can think of many movies that fail in their aspirations. This is a rare work, one that works. I am sorry I cannot be more specific. Maybe this is good. I want you to see it for yourself.
Rating: Summary: This would be a five-star movie without Meg Ryan. Review: About a year ago I read a quote from Sean Penn that said something like: Film is too powerful a medium to not carry a message. Movies should strive to be more than entertaining. Hurlyburly is not entertainment, it's full of substance, a message, and talented actors. In this film the viewer is in awe of the brilliance of Sean Penn, truly an unappreciated member of the industry (my theory relates to his disdain for the Oscars and other hype surrounding Hollywood.) My only objection to the film is the casting of Hollywood's sweetheart, Meg Ryan, as the drug addict, stripper/prostitute. If she is trying to escape her typecasting, this is the wrong place to do it. She is out of her league in this film, and unbelievable as a big mess. A bad haircut and dark eye-makeup don't cut it, maybe if she were a better actress?
Rating: Summary: Amazing humanistic film Review: This film is a stunning piece of work. I think the human experience and all its existential gore is illustrated quite well here. Sean Penn gives a stellar performance, as do all of the other actors. Definitely not appropriate when you want mindless entertainment. Open a bottle of wine, watch the film and you'll either love it or hate it. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: HUGE waste of time and money Review: What a waste. I like all of the actors in the movie, but I've never seen such a waste of such talent. Almost all of the actors are reduced to yelling much of the time, and the supposedly "great" dialogue is nothing more than drug-induced ramblings about the meaning of life. If you've gone on binges like the characters in this movie, I'm sure you've heard similar--though probably better--ramblings than any you'll hear in this, and if you haven't been on such binges, why would you want to see these? I'm no prude. I loved Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas, two films with characters you wouldn't want to hang out with and scenes that could make you very uncomfortable, but the difference between those films and this one is that the characters and dialogue in those films are actually INTERESTING. Another recent film, Gods & Monsters, takes an essentially unlikable character and makes him sympathetic, a real accomplishment and one that the writers and makers of this film might do well to study. There's an occasional amusing line here, and the actors, especially Kevin Spacey, do their best. But if you like these folks, check out their other movies instead of wasting your time with this. A pity Hollywood wasted who knows how much money and time making it.
Rating: Summary: A boring go nowhere story. It wasn't even entertaining Review: Unless you enjoy talky no story movies, don't waste your time or money renting this feature film. It should not have been made.
Rating: Summary: If you've read the bad reviews, don't believe them Review: This is quiet an entertaining film , with dynamite performances all around. Sean Penn will take your breath away, while Mr. Spacey will have you down on the floor bowing to him(and his hair deserves a standing ovation as well.) The dialogue is crisp and witty, with Meg Ryan's Bonnie getting some of the best lines. This film is well worth an hour and a half of your life.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies ever seen Review: Hurlyburly is one of my favorite movies. It's crazy but really cool. If you haven't bought already it buy it!
