Summary: Great all by itself!
Review: Yeah, I know, this movie doesn't really follow the book, but it wasn't prudent to describe the passionate love affair bewteen Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale in Hawthorne's time. Although the acting by Moore could have been better, it was still a great film. Nova Scotia was a great location spot. Oldman did a perfect job!

Summary: Nothing like the novel, but stands out on its own.
Review: I recently rented this movie from Blockbuster, and I must say that I was surprised. I had head from many of my fellow classmates that this movie followed hardly anything that had to do with the original novel, but after finishing the film, I was amazed at how they script writer and director did to give this film a great storyline. I did enjoy this movie, and I dpon't mind saying that I did. Demi Moore's performance of Hester Prynne was truly spectatular, showing that the women back in Puritan times did not always conform to the rules. Performances by other actors as well as the townspeople deserve credit as well, and the stunning score, composed by John Barry, is truly haunting and wonderful. I wouldn't listen to a lot of what the critics had to say; this movie isn't a total loss. The messages that come from this movie will remain with me, and I hope with others, for the rest of my life. I only have one question: where's the DVD, Mr. Joffe?

Summary: EVERYBODY I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Review: ...I know that it may be a cheesy adaptation of the classic novel. It is still entertaining. I like Demi Moore, and Gary Oldman is a complete babe! The chemistry between the two is great! I love the way the movie builds the tension of the love and lust between the two of them--it comes to culmination in one of my favorite sexy and sensual sex scenes. Joan Plowright is cast perfectly as the fortune telling type Harriet Higgins, true friend of Demi Moore's Hester Prynne. I think that the costumes and cinematography are wonderful. I realize that it didn't win any prestigious awards, but it is certainly etertaining.

Summary: Great movie in its own right...
Review: Forget the classic Hawthorne novel...put all that aside. Pretend you've never read it. This movie is loosely based on that story, so don't waste your time comparing it or you'll miss the brilliance of this film. Demi Moore actually pulls off some fine acting and Gary Oldman is captivating...I can still see those blue eyes. Robert Duvall is basically a nut, but that is entertaining in itself. The love story is sweet, sentimental, and beautiful. Don't judge this film for its abilty to accurately portray the novel, just watch it for its own unique story and experience it for yourself.

Summary: Realism with a point
Review: Having read the classic story, and veiwed the video itself, within a matter of days, I must admit that the movie was freely adapted from the original story. Not to imply the movie was bad. I felt the movie truly captivated the set period in a realistic manner. Moore's acting was quite good as well. She effectively gave off the sense of a woman ahead of her own time, searching for true love, along with discovering her hidden sensuality.

Summary: Probably the best acted movie of Demi Moore's Career
Review: Too bad though that most critics are biased against Demi. I'm not a Demi fan. Heck it seems Demi just can't win. Although most of the time she does (except Striptease) But I simply thought she was exceptional in this movie. I hadn't watched it for years simply because of all the biased people out there. Sure they tweaked the end of the book in the movie, but besides that the rest of the movie was outstanding. As for the R rating, sure it has nudity, it also has violence. Hey although rated R The Last of the mohicans doesn't have nudity, but does have violence. And another thing... What's wrong with nudity? Sure people don't scream bloody murder when hollywood portrays someone being decimated, but the first showings of topless people people run in all directions. Come on people, what gives?

Review: When I rented this movie for the first time I watched it six times in seven days. It captivated my heart instantly.Gary Oldman played the role of a life time.Once you lay eyes on the "Reverand" you won't want to take them off. Sexy,captivating,misterious,heart stopping and breath taking this character will strike your attention and you will want to see more and more of him.Demi Moore also acted like I have never seen her act before.Some people may say that it is a "chick flick" only because it is romantic. I disagree.My boyfriend loved it and even shead a tear or too.There is not much else I can say. "This is the best Romantic/Drama movie I have ever seen." Watch it today!You won't be sorry!

Summary: Joffe's version of The Scarlet Letter is inferior.
Review: If you want a version of The Scarlet Letter that is true to Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name, Joffe's film version is not for you. The version will appeal to moviegoers who enjoy the lurid details that an R-rated film can offer, but were only hinted at in Hawthorne's day. For students of American Literature, the Meg Foster version is best. It is true to Hawthorne and is the film of choice for American Literature instructors.
