Rating: Summary: a beautiful romance Review: There are romance movies that are fun, and others that haunt you. This is one of the few romance movies I have ever seen that does just that. Jennifer Jason Leigh who plays Elizabeth Whitcomb is stunning and makes the movie the work of art that it is. It starts out with Scotty (Campbell Scot) purchasing an antique desk at a local shop. He goes into the antique shop so his fiancee can look at a wedding dress that catches her eye, for their upcoming wedding. He gets the desk home and finds a secret compartment with a letter that she has written to an unknown love. He also finds ink and additional envelopes along with some stationary that is enscribed with her name. As a joke he writes a letter and sends a reply to the woman. Much to his surprise he finds a reply from her the following day. Before long he is writing Elizabeth, despite the diffence in time. The letter that she sent in fact is meant for him, as he learns later. They have no chance of ever meeting. As they are writing, she is sending her poetry as well. As he reads the letters and poetry he finds himself (although engaged) falling in love with Elizabeth. As he tries to shake the correspondance off, he finds his love for her is genuine. If you have ever seen "Somewhere in Time" this movie will haunt you in a similar way. As in "Somewhere in Time if you can get past the flaws in the time links or time travel, you will find a movie that will grab you. Once this movie grabs you it wont let you go. This is about love from two people but the love defies time. This is not strictly a "chick flick". Men who enjoy romance movies will enjoy this also. Jennfer Jason Leigh plays her part to perfection in a time when life was more simple and values were different than today. The desk in many ways symbolizes a time that is now past. The ending is very good and will probably make you cry. My advice to you is watch this with your spouse or that special friend. This is the kind of romance that rarely see and would love to see more often. This movie is wholesome and has no nudity or profanity. It is a movie the entire family can enjoy. I can assure you that you will watch it many times I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Sit back and enjoy. You dont see these too often.
Rating: Summary: metaphysical magic Review: Seldom is there a movie so wonderful for the "new age" or exHippie spiritual person. Here is the cause and effect and wonder of reincarnation done with both the past unresolved sorrow and hope and future of things working out at long long last after the confusion of whats going on in the 'here and now'.Not everyone wins in this round just like reality! This movie is fun and romantic and even has realistic historical references.Don't give up until the very end!!!!very nice!
Rating: Summary: Oh Ye Gods, Spare Me Review: Simply put, a much sappier "Somewhere in Time," made for TV with much lower production values. I didn't think the time-travel theme could be rendered in a more ridiculous fashion than "Somewhere in Time," but "Love Letter" has indeed succeeded in this, with a plot device that totally boggles the rational mind.To make matters worse, Campbell Scott renders one of the most unwatchable performances of his career. He is a decent actor, but his talents are not in evidence here. He almost appears embarrassed at times, not that I can blame him. Even more ridiculous are the Civil War sequences. "Somewhere in Time," though ostensibly a "period piece," was set in a time period & location that leaves the viewer with no particular impression. It could have been at any resort, from about 1880-1920, and nobody would ever have known the difference. Such cannot be said about the Civil War. A lot of people know an awful lot about this war and its battles --- trying to render the conflict on the limited TV-movie budget produces a laughable result. Only the most incorrigible romantics will be happy with this cheesy, goofy production. Guys should avoid this chick flick at all costs.
Rating: Summary: 3.5 Stars..decent but big departures from original story. Review: This is a admirable film, and I enjoyed it. The acting is well done, the characters well written. However, IF you have read the original short story this movie takes serious departures and really is only inspired by the original. Some minor spoilers ahead: In the original it is really just a tale of the guy finding the desk and three letters. You never see the story from the perspective of the young woman and there aren't any extra characters except I think his mother. In the film you get both perspectives, there is a fiance for the modern man as well as two different suitors for the young woman. Many letters are exchanged and photos as well. The ending is also completely different going for the obvious and cliched touch. This isn't neccessarily bad just not surprising since the original tale ends rather sadly and I'm sure they wanted a happier ending... So there it is a good TV movie, not too amazing but very sweet and loosly based on Finney's lovely poiniant short story.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Captivating Review: I found this film to be entirely different than your average love story. It keeps your attention from the beginning to the very end.I really don't think you can call this a "chick flick," as I believe a man could enjoy it also.I recommend it very highly for those who are romantic at heart.
Rating: Summary: wow Review: I didn't think much but after watching this film it changed my mind. This tale of love shows us that a film doesn't need a Hollywood big budget to produce a very enchanting film about love.
Rating: Summary: Not same class as "Somewhere In Time" Review: I stumbled upon this as I searched for a copy of "Somewhere in Time". The outstanding 5-star reviews led me to order it, even though it was comparatively expensive. What a sucker. Made for TV, this movie just doesn't ever allow the suspension of disbelief. The dialogue is weak, the acting forced and unconvincing and the technical aspects just silly (like the soap-opera recovery from prolonged traumatic coma). No music. No magic. Rent if you must (if you can find it) but save your money.
Rating: Summary: loved it Review: This was a wonderful story. Well written and all around great. I really enjoyed the way the love and passion were so true and strong that even time could not stop it. I would like to see more movies like this one. And books.
Rating: Summary: Love Letter Review: I think that this movie is wonderful for people who love to dream and think,( Well, Just maybe this could happen) It is a movie for people who look for hope in this world and in the other to come.A movie for lovers and hopefuls. It's great and I recommend this movie to anyone and especially to women like myself, who like a good afternoon movie where they can lay on the sofa with a blanket and a favorite cup of flavored coffee and enjoy the afternoon.
Rating: Summary: Makes absolutely no sense. Review: This movie is stupid. It makes no sense with all their time travel and stuff. My literature teacher showed it to us a few days in class. It's long and it can bore the heck out of anyone.
