Summary: A Film That Is Passionate And Full Of Beauty.
Review: Alfonso Cuaron's "Great Expectations" is a great, passionate, and entertaining film experience. The cinematography is breathtaking. The performances are fantastic as well as the screenplay. I have heard criticsm about how this new version of the classic novel doesn't really compare to the book itslef. I didn't care because I didn't notice. When I watch a film like this, I notice what's going on in THIS story, in THESE settings with THESE characters. Gwyneth Paltrow gives her best performance, even her Oscar-winning performance in "Shakespeare In Love" doesn't beat this one. "Great Expectations" is a film to view twice. First for the story, characters and events. Second for the beautiful scenery and images that Cuaron presents. The biggest reason for which I liked this film, is because I can easily relate to Finn's situation! The same type of thing that happens to him is happening to me! I've been in love with the same blond (a chick named Nichole Lester) for the past 5 years and am still trying to reach her heart. Wish me luck! This is a great film!

Summary: Good Directing
Review: We really like this film. The fresh artistic approach to this Dickens classic is surprising and pleasing. I would like to see more of Mr. Cuaron's work.

Summary: A Great Film
Review: I loved this movie. It was simply wonderful

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: It exceeded my expectations
Review: I have limited time for Gwyneth Paltrow. The only reason I attempted the movie was because Robert DeNiro was in it, and Ethane Hawke doesn't look half bad.So I was pleasantly surprised when I not only enjoyed, but loved the modern-day interpretation of Dicken's classic novel. I mean, the book was better, but the film wasn't that bad after all. It's the simple story of a poor mans obsession with a high class woman. Or so you'd think it was simple. If you like a twist in your movies, this is the movie for you.

Oh, and Paltrow, as much as I don't appreciate her, plays a very convincing spoilt brat.

Summary: A Great Hit
Review: This was a great movie. All the actors were fantastic. I have never read the story, but plan to do so in the near future. I do think that the movie could have stood without the sexual content, but it was still fabulous. A must see for everyone who has ever been let down in love. A truly grand movie.

Summary: a mockery of a brilliant classic!
Review: I found this movie an atrocious violation to Dicken's work. The book was magnificient, and for the most part, it would have worked well in modern times. But the director just down right ruined the film...not to mention the actiing was really bad! I curious to know how many people who gave this movie 5 stars actually read the book...

Summary: Beautiful, artsy film
Review: I truly believe, had it been named something different, the movie would have been a hit with the critics. A very nice film. I just purchased it and watched it again for the third time, and was just as entertained as the first. Aside from the outstanding performances of the lead duo (Ethan Hawke does a terrific job with his character, and I'm a huge Gwyneth fan), the supporting roles are very strong as well. Bancroft is incredible, and De Niro is...well De Niro. He is convincing in every role he plays. This is definitely worth your time. It is by no means the world's quickest-paced movie, but it is a very interesting story and well executed. The director did a fine job. I'm particularly interested in the ubiquitous color green.

Summary: Weak attempt at reshaping a classic for modern tastes!
Review: This is an absolutely terrible film. The classic simply cannot translate credibly this way to the world portrayed here, where all is manipulated so thoroughly into the "generation X" mould (bodies, dialogue, milieu, music, etc.). Much like the 60's updates of the classics, the personalities, attitudes, and fashions therein belong so completely to its own period that the passage of few years will be needed to date it embarrasingly. Always intended as grist for the hedonistic masses (like "Titanic"), the film-makers make no attempt to break out of the conventions of teen soapers. A sloppy job is done in unifying the script, as--unlike in the original--the two stories of the girl and the convict are not yoked here, and thereby rendering one or the other irrelevant. Dialogue is dull and often banal. Paltrow looks anorexic. DeNiro is his usual smarmy, hammy self. Attempts at humor are emetic. The cinematography, for all the accolades, lacks original style and texture. The mediocre musical score tells us what to feel. In conclusion, the best advice is to stick to David Lean's 1946 adaptation of "Great Expectations." This brilliant realization, on the other hand, not only does decisive justice to the original novel and period, it does not date in the least. Lean's masterpiece remains as immediate and poignant today as it was in 1946 (see my review at Amazon!).
