Rating: Summary: One of the best! Review: This movie is just so appealing to everybody! The soundtrack was especially excellent--adding Tori Amos who is the best in the world. If you love this movie. the soundtrack you will love also.
Rating: Summary: good "great expectations" for the 90's... Review: This movie was a little weird but it was good. This is one of those movies where you have to listen and not be interrupted. Ethan Hawk is great and Gweneth Paltrow is a great Estelle. This movie adds something to the original "Great Expectations" that Charles didn't have. This movie was also, like I said before, a little weird form beginning to end. And Estelle, even at a young age, is a girl who plays hard-to-get with Finn. But this movie is good. Robert DeNiro is also very good. So get this movie but don't have "great expectations" to be blown away.
Rating: Summary: This Movies Does the Classic Justice Review: This movie, based upon, Charles Dicken's book of the same title, captures all the esscense of the novel and adds an modern day update that keeps things from getting bland. Ethan Hawke, and Gwyneth Paltrow are at their bests in this remarkable film about love, redemption and the journey into one man's heart and soul.
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed it... Review: I enjoyed the film, though is almost a 180 degree deviation from the actual novel, which I loved. I think it went on a 179 degree turn to be exact. But none the less I enjoyed the film for its attempt to take the general idea of the novel and adapting it to our society. Not for those who don't like romantic flicks... if you enjoyed this go watch Shakespeare in Love....
Rating: Summary: I thought Great Expectations was a beautifully done movie. Review: I thought Great Expectations was a provoking adaptation of the Dickens classic. It was spellbinding of the intensity between the characters emotions.
Rating: Summary: It added a little bit of spice to Charles Dicken's original. Review: It was a wonderful movie a definite five stars! It captured all of Dicken's story and added so much more life to it making it worthwhile. There was not one part in the entire movie where it lost its carisma. I loved it and could watch it over and over again!
Rating: Summary: Good adaptation, updated nicely for the 90's Review: A film that nicely captures the male angst of the decent (yet driven) guy trying to obtain the unobtainable (in life, in love). Cinematography stellar in parts (notice the scene under the bridge in Central Park). This film is good on so many levels, that it clearly shows that a classic story is for all times.
Rating: Summary: A superb interpretation of a Dickens classic ! Review: Not a single weak link in the entire cast. Anne Bancroft was excellent, as was Gwyneth Paltrow. Superb semi-cameo from De Niro !
Rating: Summary: The worst movie (except for The Avengers) of the year Review: This adaption is totally worthless. Now I'm all for setting classics in other time periods, but why completely ruin the story? This version is completely boring. Estella is nowhere bitchy enough, Pip/Fynn is just a fawning idiot and god knows what Anne Bancroft is doing. The music is pretty good though, and Haversham's house is pretty cool, but otherwise, YUCK!
Rating: Summary: Rare message in a modern age Review: Incredible movie! Excellent acting, sets, and musical selections. Despite many critics calling it a fluke, the film sends a clear message: the classics are timeless in any interpretation (even in modernity). In fact, I call this the most overlooked secret of 1998.
