Summary: Baz, you are a genius!!!!!!!
Review: This was the best movie I ever saw! It was beautiful, enticing, uplifting, and sad. I won't bore you by saying what the movie is about because others have done it for me. Nicole Kidman was gorgeous and sang beautifully. Ewan was awesome and he too sang beautifully! They couldn't have chosen anyone better for the part of Christian (I'm a bit biased because I adore Ewan McGregor).
The costumes were spectacular, spectacular! My compliments to the designers.
John Leguizamo did an awesome job as Toulouse. It certainly gave me a laugh to see Johnny Legs with barely any legs at all! I love his accent too.
My favorite director is now Baz Luhrmann. He is truly the visionary director of the 21st century and that Academy Award should've gone to him. He tells stories not in just plain words but through dance (Strictly Ballroom), the language of Shakespeare (Romeo+Juliet), and music (Moulin Rouge).
The other actors were awesome too. Jim Broadbent as Zidler was miraculous, Richard Roxburgh did a fine job playing the ruthless Duke, Jacek Koman (the Argentinean), Garry MacDonald (the Doctor), and Matthew Whittet (Satie), along with John Leguizamo were amusing and dazzling as the Bohemians!
I close with the promise to uphold the Bohemian ideals of Truth, Beauty, Freedom, but above all things, LOVE!!!!

Summary: Good & Bad!
Review: hmmmm, what to say about this movie. Well first of all, as you can see, instead of giving it five stars like everyone else did, I only gave it three stars. I don't have the dvd, so I don't know much about the dvd; this is purely a review for the film itself. I just saw the film recently. When the film opened I instantly thought this to be a good movie; which it is. We open with the character of John Leguizamo singing a very beautiful tune, and after we see him hanging from some sort of balcony we are taken along with the camera as it moves across Paris and into the streets below, passing several interesting individuals along the way. This whole opening was in black & white by the way, and deffinitely stole my breath away. My only flaw with this part, is that they didn't extend it and use it to it's full advantage. We then follow the camera into an apartment room where Ewen McGreggor is standing and we quickly switch to full color. There Ewen McGreggor's character is narrating our story while he is typing it at his typewriter. This part was okay, but I didn't care for it too much. After he meets the Bohemians and becomes partners with them, in the same apartment building, we see glimpses of the man who owns the Moulin Rouge and his "Diamond Dogs" (Ladies), and after that we are suddenly right smack into a song and dance number outside and beyond the doors to the Moulin Rouge. This is where I had the biggest problem. I think it would've been interesting to introduce the Moulin Rouge and it's inhabitants via a Wizard of Oz effect, instead of introducing it all too sudden. I believe they even showed the image splash of the owner and "Diamond Dogs" before the introduction of the Bohemians. Well anyway, we quickly see Ewen McGreggor and his Bohemian friends in tuxes and with the other gent-folk outside the Moulin Rouge doors, as the others are engaging in a strange song and dance act. Now, the music in Moulin Rouge is anything but original; except for maybe a couple of songs, but I'm not sure. In this "introducing Moulin Rouge" song they splosh together parts of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and another song that I'm not certain of the name; its an R&B song that is played quite frequently, even today. I didn't mind this sploshing together of modern day hits. The only problem I had was the way in which they tied them together and the pieces that they selected. I liked there selection of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' for the tuxedoed men as they sing "Here we are now, entertain us" as they march down the street towards the Moulin Rouge. I liked this, and wish they would've played on it a little more, but they didn't. I didn't like the selection for the women; I can't remember what the name of the song is, but believe me, when you hear it you'll hate that they used it too, its a song that is quite over used today. Besides the selections of modern day music through out the movie, I also don't think that who ever put the pieces together, did a very good job of doing it; at one point you felt like dancing, but at another point the sploshing was so awful that you dreaded the sound. Some other awful musical selections through out the movie are Madonna's "Like a Virgin", sung by the Duke and the owner of the Moulin Rouge, and another Madonna song, "Material Girl", that rudely interrupts Nicole Kidman's opening song "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". There were some songs that I did enjoy, one being the Argentinian's version of Sting's "Roxanne", as well as the recurring lyrics of "The hills are alive with the sound of music", and also Ewen McGreggor's love song that incorporates many other popular love songs of today. Also during the introduction of the Moulin Rouge, the girls were rather ugly! Some of them were over weight, and some of them looked so made-over that they resembled 90's super models, rather than early 19th century 'brothel-broads'. Another thing that I didn't like was the clothing. Now, I know this movie isn't supposed to be authentic in period styles, but the clothes that the characters wore almost looked like paper. I mean, the clothes litterally looked like something that could be bought at a Mardi Gras shop. One more thing I'll argue about is the love theme of this movie. I saw no love between our two main characters; ones played by Ewen McGreggor and Nicole Kidman. Instead of this looking like a love story between a poor poet and a celebrated female performer, it looked more like a movie about Nicole Kidman and Ewen McGreggor. I felt like the director was actually saying "Hey everyone, here's Nicole Kidman and Ewen McGreggor!". And I felt like they were actually making love to the theatre audience than to each other. Other than these, this movie is actually pretty good. Three Stars!

Marius DeVries did the best music they could with the choreography of John O'Connel. With all these combinations, you'll never regret watching this movie and you would even repeat the movie one more time!

Summary: Can't get enough!
Review: I saw this movie in the theaters. I rented it when it came out on video. Now I have to buy it. What caught me into the trap of Moulin Rouge is Ewan McGregor's true acting and realistic emotions. He really looks like he is in love, which is a rare occurance in movies! Ewan also has a rich singing voice. His emotion can be heard in the songs. Nicole Kidman did surprise me with her strong voice. She did some fine acting as well. I will fast forward though some of the dizzying effects at the beginning to get to the slower pace and true story telling. One for your movie collection.

Summary: If you like musicals...
Review: If you like the old black & white musicals and want to see that genre reproduced in the 21st century you'll most likely enjoy this one (as long as you don't have puritanical values:-). It may well be the most colorful movie to date. The visual effects are spectacular! Musically, the skill of incorporating lyrics from Elton John, The Beetles, Nirvana, and other modern pop artists was very nicely done. After hearing all the hoopla about the film, I was looking forward to seeing it. Hey, it is supposedly a great movie and I love Nicole Kidman, so I can't go wrong by investing a couple of hours watching it, right? Then I read some of the reviews posted here about how you will "love it or hate it" and found it more alluring. So I got some popcorn and set out on my journey. Well, I didn't HATE it, but sadly, it really didn't do anything for me. I can appreciate it for what it is, but quite frankly, after about a half hour, I went into the kitchen and started washing dishes. NOT what I was hoping for. (Yes, I kept going back periodically to see if I was missing something. I wasn't). I viewed it as 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' meets 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. A musical fantasy with better effects but without the chemistry or the rice. I as I have sated, I don't like musicals. I'd much rather see something more realistic or weirdly captivating. NOT a film where the actors break into song for no apparent reason. It's not for me, but I still give it 4/5 for visual appeal.

Summary: Painful, Meaningless, and Incoherent
Review: I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't like what I found. This movie is spastic. There are dozens of edits every minute, each unjustified and collectively incoherent. The plot hangs together by a thread, weakly starched by lyrics borrowed from several familiar songs. The speedy stop-motion video and overdubbed cartoon sound effects are insulting. The movie views like a bad acid trip. That this movie received such interest and critical acclaim speaks to the unsatisfied demand for creativity from Hollywood, and the void of taste swirling in the wake of the American populus.

Summary: Hated every second of it.
Review: Absolutely the worst movie of 2001, and one of the worst movies I've ever seen, PERIOD. Even the beautiful Nicole Kidman couldn't save the movie. When I saw it in the theater, I noticed that people kept getting up and leaving. At first I thought they might just be going to the concession stand, but as more and more people trickled out and never came back, I realized they were leaving because it was truly an awful movie. Less than half the original audience was there by movie's end. If I would've been by myself, I would've left also. Come to find out, my viewing companion felt the same way I did! Too bad we didn't speak about it during the movie, so we could've left and spared ourselves the misery of watching such tripe.

Review: This is by far the best pictured ever made, and if you havent seen it,I think you should, because you are missing somthing, that is going to change the way you see the hole perseption of the imagination that has to be in a movie. To tell a story is easy, but to blow all your sences, the way this movie does, IS THE EXPERENCE OF BEEIN IN A MOVIE .

Summary: one of the best movies ever made
Review: Who ever said musicals are out? I first saw this in June after much convincing from a friend and have seen it 14 times since then. This has something for everyone? It has comedy, drama, and romance. It's a musical. It's got Ewen Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman. That's a reason in itself. There is a lot of symbolism for the lit lover and did I mention Ewen McGregor? I can't say enough about this movie so i'll just stop here. Go buy it and see for yourself.

Summary: A Beautiful, Funny, Wonderful Story About a Boy
Review: I have to say that honestly - I wasn't all that excited about this movie. I love musicals (especially Les Miserables), but it was advertized somewhat poorly and I thought it looked almost hokey. Not to mention how sick I was of hearing Lady Marmalade every 3 seconds on the radio. I thought the movie seemed not worth my time, and that I wouldn't like it anyway. How incredibly wrong I was. This more is so unique and has so much character, it blows you away. Whether you enjoy musicals or not, this movie is amazing for so many different reasons - the acting, the cast, the sets, the costumes...and of course, the songs! It's nothing that you could expect or imagine, because it's in a genre all its own. It fits so many different categories, but not just one - a drama, a comedy, a musicial, a farce - a love story. It's a movie that definitely reaches people on all levels, as long as its given a chance. This is one film that is definitey not a waste of your time. It will leave you breathless and drunk with emotion. If only there were more than 5 stars...
