Summary: This is the best movie I've ever seen this year.
Review: I don't really care about what the movie critics said, Dangerous Beauty has a lot of taste in it. Great love story between a nobleman and a courtesan. After I accidentally saw it on cable, I fell in love with it. I bought the CD soundtrack, I listened to it everyday. The pair of Sewell and McCormack was really great. I hope they make another romance movie again. They really paired well. I already bought the tape, and I've watched it only 8 times so far. I am a hopeless romantic. Dangerous Beauty is a very good romance movie, well made, music was good. I just wished they ended the movie in a different way. They could've have shown more of Marco and Veronica's love affair.

Summary: Brilliant drama about the power of moral certainty
Review: Viewers familiar with Ayn Rand's concept of "the sanction of the victim" will find themselves in awe of this drama. Veronica Franco refuses to give the sanction of the victim to the Spanish Inquisition, and thereby manages to defeat that evil institution. While watching this movie, I found myself wishing that Bill Gates would see it and come to understand the principle, use it to defeat the evil Antitrust laws. That won't happen. But at least we have this lush portrayal of a pagan woman of high character ignoring the life-hating edicts of religion and finding joy and happiness on earth. The historical setting is irrelevant to a romantic drama of this sort. To understand and appreciate this movie, you must understand the theme, and then apply that theme to the particular concretes of your own life. The details of your life are different from that of Renaissance Italy, but the principle still applies, no matter what time or city you live in. Don't give the sanction of the victim!

Review: I saw this movie in the theatre and haven't gotten tired of it yet. The costumes, sets, and dialogue is superb. The love story is made even better by the fact that it is based on a true story. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves a good romance.

Summary: Absolutely breathtaking - don't rent - BUY
Review: I was probably one of 24 people who saw this sumptuous movie when it was in the theaters and I say pity on those who passed it by. This lush tale of women, men, lovers, spite and the holy church is fascinating to see. I initially questioned why a mother would encourage her daughter to become a whore. I quickly learned the difference beteen a prostitue and a courtesean. The love scenes were fantastic and Venice played its role extremely well. Buy -don't rent - this fabulous movie.

Review: This movie is one of the best I've seen in years. I almost didn't watch it because the title made it look like a cheesy thriller type. I wanted a good sensual romantic film and this came through brilliantly. I do wonder sometimes if she used a stunt double for the banana scene ;)

Summary: You Want the Truth? You Can't Handle the Truth!
Review: This film was faithful to its subject? I thought the film was entertaining and have no trouble understanding why some people consider it a favorite. But this is NOT history, it's 1990s melodrama, lush costumes filmed through a post-modernist lens. 17th century Venetian society was decadant, ribald, immoral to the point of not caring, and most importantly for the film, was not that unkind to women. Venetian society had evolved in such a way that the married women spent most of their time with their professional valet lovers, fildelity was a joke, men and women had the same access to a buffet of vices. There was, simply, no "polite society", no reason for men and women to restrain themselves. So they didn't. McCormmick's character was delicious (and kudos to her, a major star in the making) but the story, to me, toyed with the audience's sympathies, built our like for the main character at the expense of conveying the world in which she lived. The film, to sum up, was "Pretty Woman" for the Merchant-Ivory crowd. Great photography for those who like their world in soft focus.

Review: I hesitated to watch this one, because I wasn't familiar with any of the lead actors. I watched it last night, and I can't believe it! What a beautiful film! It sends such a valuable message to women of all walks of life. It's like candy for the film-lover's mind. It has every element that makes a movie appealing. This one is definitely one to own.

Review: Catherine McCormick and Rufus Sewell are sizzling hot in this romantic drama. It is based on the book "The Honest Courtesan". The movie recounts the amazing life of Veronica Franco, a courtesan in 16th century Venice. The actors, costurmes, and scenery are all outstanding. This movie truly should not be missed. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a "Chick Flick", and is enjoyed by all who view it. Women such as Veronica Franco were ahead of their time, and paved the way for future generations to come. The movie shows us how awful it can be for women of this era. Pre-arranged marriages for ladies with plentiful dowries could bring no love, education, and above all.....no respect. It not only made me realize how lucky we are in today's society; but to also still see similarities between Veronica's life to that of some women today.
