Summary: Great teen movie
Review: While the plot is predictable, the acting is superb, and the script itself has many small nuances that make the movie worthwhile.

The heart of the story isn't dance, or kids' dreams, but the relationship between Derek and Sarah. Unlike many other black / white relationship movies (where the black character moves into a white environment, and we get the white environment's objections to the relationship), this movie shows us the black environment's point of view. Sarah has to adjust to a mostly black environment, for instance. We also get to hear why many black girls won't like seeing one of their 'best guys' dating a white girl. We do get to experience this movie from a completely unexpected point of view!

The movie itself (while still containing many cliches) has a very important social message besides being fun to watch.

Summary: Pick up the pace!!
Review: Please! This movie I watched with my friends and it definetly was a chick flick but not the kind of chick flick I expected. Infact, it could of been a guy flick just as well however, it was a tad bit focused on dance. The movie got a little boring, but still really good. Theres not a lot to say, I don't really like Julia Stiles I think she didn't put any flavor into the movie which also made it boring but I supose she couldnt help it - it all depended on the script. Don't think you'll hate it just because of the dance fact. It had a much deeper meaning.

Overall: Buy :)

Summary: Travails of a Destroying Angel
Review: Julia Stiles is appealing as an enchantress who causes someone to die every time she dances. Eventually, studying hip-hop dancing gives her the Soul to use her awesome power for good instead of evil - by the end of the movie her dancing exterminates human vermin (inner-city gangstas) instead of innocents like her mother. As character growth this is pretty cold-hearted, but Stiles has the charm to make it seem almost acceptable. And the premise is handled with grace and subtlety.

The Southside Chicago scenes, especially in the nightclubs and classrooms, have an energy and naturalness rarely seen in this kind of movie. Inner-city blacks are portrayed with insight and affection, and they are by far the high point of the movie. My only caveats are that the slang seems dated and the whole scenario a bit sugar-coated: Common sense indicates that a new white girl in an almost all-black school would have a harder time than this.

I also was disappointed that the moral implications of her magic and Soul-growth were dealt with so summarily. How stimulating it would have been if the teens who went to this movie for the dancing came away with a philosophical seed in their minds. Art is supposed to be amoral and existential, yet Stile's is capable of both moral distinctions and physical destruction. It's left unclear as to whether her growth is complete or is still evolving at movie's end - will she eventually reach a point where her dancing no longer claims victims, or will its lethality merely become increasingly selective? And if this evolution comes from her getting Soul, traditionally an African-American quality, why do her victims switch from white to black?

I'm looking forward to a remake of this film that toughens up the urban scenes and avoids skirting its moral complexities. But for what it is, it's an enjoyable time.

Summary: Finally, a movie that deals with the complexity
Review: of interracial relationships instead of exploitative, stereotypical views and attitudes of an American society which still have a phobia about such relationships. Also, it's a very healthy, well-balance IR movie set in inner-city Chicago.

Julia Stiles character was heading to Chicago to live with her estranged dad after her mother died in a car accident trying to get to her daughther's dance rehersal at her suburban school.
She went to the new school, at first snubbed her would-be boyfriend because he's Mr. Know-it-all. She then befriend Kerry Washington's character, whose brother, Derek, was snubbed initially by her. They became fast friends.

There's tension in the neighborhood, where there's mainly female-headed households, crime and other social ills. The movie doesn't sugar-coat the problems nor it gives an idealistic view of IRs. I recommend this movie before I would recommend anyone seeing Mariah's awful movie.

Summary: If you love music, you'll love this
Review: It's about a guy and a girl who fall in lov, there are ups and downs, but wow, the music's great! If you love RnB and to a lesser extent rap then watch this. The soundtrack is awesome. It features songs such as 'Get It On Tonite' by Montell Jordan which is a fab song, and 'All or Nothing'- a kinda RnB based orchestra track. (This is the song Sara dances to in her audition at the end). I love this film and have watched it loads of times just for the music. The storyline seems real, although it it a bit stereotypical with a single, teenage mother and a group of (teenage)thugs into drugs and crime. However, a great film. And as my review title says, if you love music(like me) you'll love this!
