Summary: A Disappointing Transfer
Review: This DVD transfer does not have the caliber of video and sound you would expect for a "special edition" of a movie with this much of a following. The sound is not available in 5.1 surround, the picture looks like they used a relatively abused master for the transfer (in a few places I could swear I saw those little hair things you see in a theater that shows old movies--I almost expected the tape to break from time to time). Don't get me wrong, this is MUCH better than seeing it on VHS, but don't expect the beautiful quality of the restored "Vertigo."

The special features are original (especially the entire screenplay with jumps to the scene displayed), but I would have like to have the trailer also.

For the price, this is a good deal for movie buffs. If you're not sure about whether to buy or not, rent it at netflix.com. If you like it and decide to buy, your rental charge is reimbursed if you buy here at amazon.com within 30 days of rental from netflix.

Summary: A thought provoking film, this is no comedy.
Review: Taxi Driver takes a place beside Plath's "The Bell Jar," Rosner's "Mr. Goodbar," and just about anything by Salinger. The movie explores the darker side of human nature, and maybe even the triumph of that nature, but in the form of a person in whom you can see just enough of yourself to make it really frightening.

Summary: Taxi Driver is a superb movie!!!!
Review: Taxi Driver is a great movie, don't let Leonard Maltin get you sidetracked. He doesn't understand this story!Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster are fantastic in their roles. The music score couldn't be more perfect! Its a great story that requires deep understanding and insight. Its not for everyone. I've enjoyed this movie for many years and very pleased with the new digitally remastered special edition with the additional footage, the great "featurette" added at the end. This is a must-see film, don't miss it!

Summary: One of the best
Review: This movie is definetly one of the best films ever made. I am thrilled that the special edition has come out on VHS. If a movie ever deserved to be remasterd, it's this one. The movie tells the story of a cabbie called Travis Bickle. During the course of the movie, we see him become more and more out of touch with the people around him. He feels isolated, and eventually the need to lash out violently becomes too great to bear. Scorsese has provided a portrait of not only that volatile time period, but one of humanity in general. Travis' plight is one that I'm sure most people have gone through:The need to be loved. The critics of the film can't see through the violent exterior of the film to it's true message: That sometimes people can be cold and uncaring. Humanity created the final image of Travis Bickle, it just can't face up to that fact. I would suggest purchasing this movie immediately, it is definetly a must-have.

Summary: De Niro is at his best.
Review: The critically acclaimed director, Martin Scorsese, has another great film. This movie is Jodie Foster's first and one of De Niro's best. It's a must see!

Summary: This film is a modern classic.
Review: Between the golden age of Hollywood and the advent of the blockbuster, American cinema went through a sort of dark age. The late 60's and early 70's saw a new generation of film school mavericks like Coppola, Scorsese and Altman emerge. These young intellectuals began to explore more deeply the complicated state of humanity in America. Taxi Driver is arguably the best film, not just of it's era, but maybe of all time, reflecting the alienation that every individual in the history of mankind has felt from their nation, family and god. Paul Schrader's script is honest and heartfelt. And Scorsese's cinematic vision transports you into the seedy and terrifying underbelly of New York City. Robert De Niro is a real treat to watch as the intense lead. This is more than just a movie, it's a masterpiece of filmmaking whose themes, subtleties and cinematic hypersensitivity demand analysis and repeat viewings.

Summary: SICK!
Review: jinxed cabbie gets worst fares. killers, who**s, etc. thwarted by his fantasy play-sex-toy, he cooly decides to kill her candidate....and some pimps too. very high marks for emotion and cinema, deadly low on plot...no surprises. a strange child porn/child exploitation theme wanders through this film, leaving one feel empty....useless. the ending and coda seem to support all the wrong things. hmmn. a little editing would've made this film twice as good.

Summary: Fantastic film, lousy use of the format it was released on.
Review: The other reviews speak for themselves, but I am posting this to warn about the horrible quality in which the first DVD release of Taxi Driver suffered from. No special features, no captions, only subtitles in Spanish, and digital artifacts (blockyness and harshness to sound) galore. Hopefully the "special edition" will be of much higher quality.

Summary: Taxi Driver: a masterpiece if i've ever seen one!
Review: A wonderful film by a wonderful director, starring some wonderful talents: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Jody Foster. The camera work is great, along with plot and dialogue that blows you out of your seat. Beautiful score goes well with such a beautiful movie. If you like this one i also recommend Mean Streets, another Scorsese-De Niro-Keitel collabraration. Wonderful camera work!
