Rating: Summary: Standing ovation!!! Review: At the end of the movie, a lot of people stood up and clapped. Although, I wasn't among the ones standing and clapping, I agreed with their sentiments. It was a "beautiful" film. I laughed, I cringed, I got teary eyed, and I cheared. Russell Crowe and Ed Harris are sure to be nominated for an Oscar for their respective roles. This movie is definitely worth the money and two and half hours. I never read the book and I don't plan to but I'd definitely see the movie again.
Rating: Summary: Oscar Performance Review: You really get to explore and understand extreme genius. Just as Amadeus showed us the tortured mind of Mozart and Shine, a surprising story about real-life classical pianist David Helfgott, A Beautiful Mind will also be an insightful classic. Russell Crowe's performance was key to the success of this movie. Few, if any other could have brought to life the screen with such understanding of the character. Did not know the range that this actor possesses.
Rating: Summary: An exceptionally fine film Review: This is absolutely one of the best films I've seen this year. The performances from all members of the cast were wonderful and I won't be surprised to see a number of well-deserved Oscars awarded to the film. As an economist and fan of Dr. Nash's work I was curious how his life would be presented and whether or not it would accurately portray his genius and contributions in an interesting fashion. It was interesting, it was powerful, and I was amazed. This movie is definitely a must see.
Rating: Summary: One of the Years 10 Best Films! Review: The story of John Nash, a mathematician, "Beautiful Mind" contains some of the best performances I've seen in quite some time. Russel Crowe is a marvel as the troubled John Nash, and Jennifer Connely leaves a foot print in Hollywood with her performance. The film keeps you guessing as to if this guy, John, is really sick or telling the truth about his "illusions". At the beginning though, I didn't quite see where the film was going, and to tell you the truth it bored me a bit, but after the first twenty minutes the film starts to pick up pace throwing us a few laughs here and there. The film is structured perfectly as far as emotions go, and the over all feel of the film is heart warming and memorable. Oscar winning performaces on both Crowe's and Connelly's part, whom I'm sure will get at LEAST an Oscar nomination. Definitely one of the best films of the year!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Game Review: This film really messed with my head, took me into spaces that I am normally more suspicious of, tricked me, fooled me...then gently brought me back to reality, finishing me off with inspiration. A fine, very fine film therefore. Hard to hold back the tears, particularly since the film was based on a true story. If you are interested in affairs of the mind go on this journey with Professor Nash and director Ron Howard. I learned a lot and felt a lot.
Rating: Summary: Better than fiction Review: ...maybe because there is a healthy dose of fiction injected into this movie, supposedly based on real events, about a real man. I will go on the presumption that it's mostly true, however, because, like Alicia Nash so eloquently tells her husband at the near-breaking point, "I need to believe that something extraordinary is possible." I think, after this movie, I do. I hadn't known the story of John Nash until I saw A Beautiful Mind, and now I'd truly like to find out more about him, because he is a fascinating character. Russel Crowe plays him to perfection, once again proving that he is deserving of more than one Oscar. Whether he is talking to friends at Princeton, or relating with the imaginary people he constructed due to his schizophrenia, or goofily wooing his future wife, he is utterly John Nash. Jennifer Connelly should finally have a breakthrough in this movie - she is literally glowing. She's been fantastic in everything else I saw her in, from Dark City to Requeim for a Dream, although, until now, her full potential just hasn't been used. It's definitely utilized here! Ed Harris was perfect, as always. Because I barely knew what to expect going in, I had a great experience. There was actually a point in the movie where I didn't know what was true: Nash's delusions or the people trying to convince him he WAS delusional. Ron Howard is that good, he nearly had me duped into believing in the delusion, just like Nash had. I must say his false beliefs were, at times, more fun than the true events happening around him. But the movie proved me wrong. It is his struggle to overcome schizophrenia, or to at least learn to live with it, that is truly the heart of the matter. And it is more interesting than international espionage, more touching than a friendly roommate with a little niece. If what John Nash had accomplished, with the help of his wife, isn't inspirational, then I don't know what is. I hope this wins all kinds of Academy awards. It deserves heaps.
Rating: Summary: One of the Year's Best. Definitely Worth The Trip Review: This is getting to be a pattern. In Gladiator, Russell Crowe falls from being ruling general of the Roman Army to being a gladiatorial slave. In a beautiful mind, he goes from being a mathematical genius to.... something far less. And then he battles back, to return to a different kind of glory. This is a wonderfully directed and told story with award winning acting from not only Crowe, but also Jennifer Connelly. She could win a supporting actress award. But probably the kudos go most to Ron Howard who takes an intellectual, interior story about a mathematician and brings it alive. That's much harder to do than with an action story. This movie has a nice surprise in it-- nice in that it sneaks up on you. Before long, this kind of a surprise, which other films have demonstrated in the last few years, will become a genre all its own-- maybe call it the "reality" surprise. Well, I've tried to talk about it without ruining the story. This is a story that uses all the levels of the roller coaster. It'll take you for a nice emotional ride. It was fun, the day before seeing the movie, to read an Op-Ed piece in the NY Times written by a former Princeton student who remembered the real professor, haunting the library. It brought an extra dose of reality to this film which is based on a real life genius who was awarded the Nobel prize. S.C. Gwynne wrote, "a campus character we called Purple Sneakers, a harmless middle-aged crazy man who hung around the main undergraduate library." "This hapless fellow, who was easily recognized by his mismatched plaid clothing and purple or red high-top sneakers, stalked and spied on students as they walked in and out of the library. He was too silly to be frightening: he would sneak about with exaggerated, mincing steps that reminded me of old Bugs Bunny cartoons, hiding behind trees and peeking out at students as though we could not see him." The character arc in this film is an unusual one, beautifully portrayed. There are some delicious lessons in it on humility, on what is important, on illusions, on genius. This film is about insanity. You have to wonder. If a genius can see all the possibilities, doesn't that open him to the risk of seeing edges of impossibilities? And does that put him at risk of going mad? And is it worth the risk? Ahh. Such a beautiful mind-- like a rose-- with unexpected thorns. There are many flowers that grow this way. Don't miss it.
Rating: Summary: Russell Crowe. Gaude, actor singularis splendidus! Review: What a movie!! It was the perfect Christmas gift that I gave to myself. This movie is worth seeing. C'est magnific!! A Beautiful Mind, with extraordinary dialogue sequences and its unique sense of humor is far away from being overdramatic. Revealing with an unpredictable score, the movie was exceptionally well driven (or directed) from the beginning to its very emotional and elegant end. Russell Crowe is intense, fascinating and moving. With his splendid touch, Crowe gave John Forbes Nash his lovable human side. No doubt that this particular personality needed a great actor with a beautiful mind. "Russell Crowe. Gaude, actor singularis splendidus!" The great talents of supporting actors Connelly, Harris and Bettany gave the movie its balance. Balance needed to give to a very well written script its substance, and to make the whole movie enjoyable. This movie gave me much more than what I expected to get. Good enough to make a great deal of sense to me. That's the reason why I know say that the movie A Beautiful Mind is "Super Omnes Speciosa."
Rating: Summary: Moves you, Grabs you at the heart and won't let go.. Review: This is an excellent, must see movie (especially on the big screen the first time you watch it). Moving, touching, Nash will grab your heart as you watch the turmoil and challenges that he endures. And Alicia is wonderful as she chooses to stay with him and help him get his life back. The potrayal of what it is really like in a schizophrenics mind was excellent. Yes, there are a few small things I call them that could have been better, but I've yet to see a movie that was perfect, there is always something you could have done better. Once you get into the movie,(which will not take long) you could care less about the small things..you are so in to the John Nash character and supporting cast. The movie was named accurately as it was a beautiful movie and had a beautiful ending. My hat is off to you once again, Russell Crowe and also to Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Ron Howard and all other supporters.
Rating: Summary: Russell Crowe Shines Again! Review: Is there nothing this actor cannot do? Is there a character he cannot play? He runs the gamut with this one. This film has it's moments of over simplifification and melodrama (but I suppose that is to be expected to show nearly 50 years of a man's life in 2 hours), however you can't help but get caught up in Crowe's performance and a glimpse into what John Nash's life must have been like -- not to mention the life of Alicia. Ron Howard did a smart job of letting us view this through Nash's eyes. The supporting cast was superb - Jennifer Connelly was lovely and totally at ease with this role. Ed Harris and Christopher Plumber, always fabulous. But it is Russell Crowe who keeps you glued to the screen. You leave the theatre drained and aching to know more about the amazing, tortured, blessed life of John F. Nash, Jr. Don't miss it!
