Rating: Summary: Good cast, charming story Review: This is an enjoyable film. The eccentric 1960s soundtrack complements the eccentric family portrayed by Cher, Winona Ryder, and Christina Ricci. There are some delightful moments with Ricci, especially when she sticks a pumpkin on her head and chases her mother! The film's title might seem misleading, with Mermaids only being relevant in passing. Having thought about this, Hans Christian Andersen's story of The Little Mermaid has the main character having to return to sea and not be with her lover or she will lose her freedom to swim underwater, and I think this is the point that is being made here. Cher's character has always moved on from one town (and one boyfriend) to the next in order not to lose her freedom to do so. This reflects the prevailing view of women in 1960s western society in that it would be acceptable for men to do this, but for a woman it's a little scandalous. The film falls into the trap of a lot of period drama in that almost all the cars seem like well-kept 1963 vintage vehicles, with only Cher's car being dirtied down enough to look realistic. But they look great, so why worry? Bob Hoskins plays against type as a kindly American who changes the lives of the three girls and Winona Ryder is the focus of the family as a confused teenager who sometimes seems more down to Earth than her mother. It's a charming story, well told.
Rating: Summary: Excellent movie! Cher is an ALL-TIME GREAT! Review: This is one of Cher's most fantastic movies! I am a movie collector, and I have been trying to add this movie to my collection for a while! It needs to be made available again! Anyone know where I can find a copy?
Rating: Summary: Great Film Review: This is one of my favorite movies. It has drama, excitement, laughter and tears. The characters are unique, even bizarre individuals, and yet they ring true. There's some great acting by everyone, and it's a "must see" for Winona Ryder fans. This is a great family movie, Cher's performance in this movie is so great. It tells the story of a Jewish family who is constantly moving because Mrs. Flax (Cher) is always causing some kind of gossip in the town and ends up moving all the time. Charlotte (Winonna Ryder) plays an odd teenager, who is in love with a caretaker, and can't keep her mind off of him. The synopsis is great, and filled with two hours of great comedy played out by two great actresses. This is a must see movie. The soundtrack is great. Fun pop songs ("Johnny Angel", "Mambo Italiano") are worked into the movie, making certain scenes particularly memorable. In particular, I loved the scene with the song "If You Want to Be Happy". (Yes, the song is mean-spirited and offensive, but after seeing these women "reclaim" it, it always makes me smile!) Check this out!
Rating: Summary: wow Review: This is such a great film and I must admit the whole cast was great, Yup even Cher!
Rating: Summary: One for the girls Review: This movie is one of my favourites. I was fifteen when it came out and, being a product of a Catholic school, understood exactly where Charlotte (Winona Ryder) was coming from. Most fifteen year old girls have had obsessions with older guys at some point and I was no exception. Having a Catholic education made it even harder (guilt galore) and Charlotte really helped me through a confused time in my life. One to watch with your best friend.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Review: This movie is really brilliant! It combines the famous acting talents of Winona Ryder, Cher, Christina Ricci and Bob Hoskins. It really makes you laugh and cry. It is very like what happens in real life and is a definate movie for all Cher fans.
Rating: Summary: Good movie! Review: This movie stars Cher as somewhat of a free-spirited woman (mrs. flax), the mother of 15 year old daughter, charlotte (Winona Ryder), and a younger daughter, kate (Christina Ricci), who is 9 years old. Mrs. Flax is sassy and likes to dress sexy, especially around her male friends. Charlotte is rebelious, and her carelessness actually leads to her younger sister almost drowning! The family has many problems, and trials throughout. That is until Lou Landsky (Bob Hopkins) comes along and brings the family into balance. This is such a good movie in everyway, and as always cher is awesome! Rated PG-13, this movie is appropriate for most of your family.
