Summary: The best romantic movie ever!
Review: I love this movie. I love everything about it! The all-star cast is truly made up of "all-stars" in the field of acting. Sean Connery, Gena Rowlands, Angelina Jolie, Ryan Phillippe, Jon Stewart, Gillian Anderson, Ellen Burstyn, Anthony Edwards, Jay Mohr, Dennis Quaid, and the many others that I'm forgetting all give great performances. I also enjoy the way the film focuses on the individual lives, then pieces them together at the end.

Offering so many different perspectives on romance, Playing by Heart is sure to touch everyone in some way. With both single and married couples, those afraid to love and those desperately seeking love, this movie appeals to a wide audience.

Summary: great flick
Review: This movie is great! I dislike, though, how it switches from story to story. Angie jolie is great, she has some great lines and her hair and makeup is great! Spectacular acting. She has attitude in this movie, and she plays a vulnerable person, but at the same time scared, unsure, young and vibrant! you should watch it even if you aren't a jolie fan.

Summary: One of my All-Time Favorites
Review: This film has one of the greatest cast ever essembled. From Sean Connory to Ryan Phillippe, each actor gives an outstanding performance. Its follows four women thru their lives and current relationships, whether it be marriage or a new boyfriend. It basically about how no relationship is going to be perfect, no matter how much you love each other. This flim seems so real at times, it feels like a documentary. You almost feel like your voyuering in their lives. I recommend this film for at least a rental, form your own opinion. Maybe you will have the same love for this film as I do.

Summary: Great ensemble film
Review: Playing By Heart is a film I'd recommend to just about anyone. It's the story of 3 generations within the same family struggling with love, and marriage..from the Patriarch Sean Connery and Matriarch Ellen Burstyn rediscovering their love, to their youngest daughter Angelina Jolie, pursuing a quiet outsider type in Ryan Phillipe....this film is one that even guys can enjoy, and that's a positive for any woman who is looking for a tearjerker type of film to watch with their guy.

Summary: Talking about this movie is like...
Review: Everything about this film perfectly hits the mark and more importantly touches the heart and stirs the soul. I was quite disgusted with the way a number of critics especially here in the UK totally dismissed this sublime ensemble of relationships and tormented lives. While the impressive cast boasts such big names as Sean Connery, Gena Rowlands, Ellen Burstyn, Dennis Quaid and Madeleine Stowe I must confess that I initially bought this DVD for Gillian Anderson (being a once great X-phile) but on experiencing the movie it took little time to realise that it is Angelina Jolie and the extraodinary Ryan Phillippe who totally steal this show with their awesome "romanza" quality emotional destiny. Yes, Ellen Burstyn, Jay Mohr, Jon Stewart, Gillian Anderson, Anthony Edwards and very much Dennis Quaid are all wonderful but no matter how many times I view Jolie and Philippe pour their hearts out my own heart is poured out like an emptied bottle along with a thousand very gratifying tears. The music soundtrack is excellent from Bran Van 3000's awesome DRINKING IN LA to the great John Barry's sublime score for lovers and those alone dreaming of love. The CD is well worth getting. The DVD is very good quality but those busy body so'n'so's at MIRAMAX made a decision to compromise the widescreen ratio by a modest but significant margin. The final scene that goes into the credits proves this as the image becomes wider for the last couple of minutes. There was absolutely no reason to have made this compromise. If MIRAMAX is concerned that scope films produce too small a size of medium shot in the home arena then as the studio that made the film they should have shot hard-matt 1:1:85 that way there would be no compromise as they would have put the DVD in that ratio instead. As MIRAMAX has domain over the entire process from script to DVD they should have thought of this issue to begin with. Do NOT under any circumstances allow this issue to put you off buying this DVD as the slight compromise may well create a more intimate framing but it would have worked fine in its exact true ratio also.

PLAYING BY HEART...the most beautiful American romance film of the 1990's.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: If you love movies with witty and stellar dialogue this is for you! I have always loved Ryan Phillipe for his looks, but in this he actually shows true talent! And Angelina Jolie........well nothing less than fabulous can ever be said about her! She is hilarious and terrific as Joan and completely perfect for the role. Her talent and flair radiate off the screen like you would not believe!Equally awe-inspiring is Gillian Anderson and John Stewart. What a better way to meet a guy than having his bookself fall on you!The only part I was not satisfied with was between the minister and gracie. I was not thrilled, although Hugh(Dennis Quaid) was pretty good. I found the storyline of a woman cheating on her husband with a minister a little too creapy. The title should have been dancing about architecture! Oh and by the way........The soundtrack is pretty cool too.

Review: This has got to be one of the best movies I have ever seen! It will make you laugh and cry. I could watch it again and again. This is Ryan Phillippe's greatest role so far.

Summary: Playing by the Beat of a Different Drummer
Review: It is rare that I award five stars in any review, but Playing By Heart is a rare type of film. Pulp Fiction-like in storytelling, the movie is composed of a puzzle-piece plot of various stories that come together beautifully in the end. This movie subverts a lot of cinematic standards. The story line is not linear, the characters are not your typical theatrical cookie-cutter cut-outs, and the message of the film is topical and revelatory.

If that doesn't sell you, check out this cast:

-Angelina Jolie at her finest, and this beauty is fine on an off day. -Gillian Anderson in her best role to date (mind you, I have yet to see House of Mirth). -Ellen Burnstyn and Jay Moore in roles so powerful that you will want to immediately call your parents or children and tell them how much you love them. -Sean Connery and Gena Rowlands...need I say more. What a handsome couple they make in this film too. -Ryan Phillipe easily giving his most emotional and powerful role to date.

-John Stuart proving he can act his way to bigger and better things than The Daily Show. -Dennis Quaid in the role that will keep you guessing the most. -...and last but not least: Anthony Edwards and Madeline Stowe. I was never a huge fan of Stowe, but she was amazing in this film.

I give you listing of the cast only to emphasize how brilliant this movie is. I have no idea why it got minimal press when it was released in theaters, but don't let this film pass you up! It was easily the best film I've seen in years. An amalgam of heart, acting, and storytelling at its best. Brilliant!
