Summary: Moulin Rouge is Spectacular Spectacular
Review: This is the best movie of the year and the most powerful one I've seen since The Godfather. It's aboslutley excellent, you can't help falling in love with it. If you haven't seen this movie yet, pick up this dvd when it's released on 12/18, you won't regret it. The dvd is going to be a 5-Star Fox Release and a 2-disc set including, a "production" audio commentary, a "writing" audio commentary, behind the scene vignettes, 5 "Star" featurettes, multi-angle dance sequences, deleted and extended scenes, the HBO first look special, 2 music videos (Lady Marmalade and Come What May), a live performance of Lady Marmalade at the MTV music video awards, early script drafts, and trailers. Fox has reported this is over 6 hours worth of special features, I can't wait.

Summary: Only Because It's Not Possible To Give It Zero!
Review: Dragged by the wife to see this butchering of history, pop music, the awesome artist Lautrec (who does not one bit of painting in this film, but drinks plenty of absinthe), it was much worse than I thought it would be. Eye candy? Please! Anyone who has sat through 2 straight hours of MTV videos (preferably from the mid eighties) has seen just about everything this overlong, overdone, over-everythinged movie has to offer (except for maybe Nicole Kidman who has never looked more beautiful or elegant). The number of 5-star reviews amazes me! I'll give it one star for her Elephant house. The ultimate film of style over substance. And I thought the seventies were dead?

Summary: "above all, this is a story about love"
Review: "Above all...this is a story about love" - Remember those words. First the movies faults: the plain and simple fact is that this is NOT a traditional musical. The dancing sequences are very short and the music too take very stilted roles. Luhrman's use of the camera is, of course, very stylized and on occasion distracting (I have personally never been a fan of Luhrman's signature frantic camera/cut pace). The sets are extraoridnarily built but very poorly explored, mainly due to Lurhman's sequence pacing. And yet, this is the best movie that I have seen since 1997's "American History X" (my major contemporary fav). Every single negative review I have read has cited the faults of the movie that I have touched on above...but they're all losing sight of what this movie is suppose to be...a love story! The music and camera work are merely supporting members of the cast...the backdrop on which this canvas is painted. Lurhman has created the one of great love story of our time and it all goes back to the tragic lovers (i.e.- Romeo & Juliet). The tragedy is exquisitely structured and poignantly executed. The acting in this movie is absolutely breath-taking...on everyone's part, especially Ewan McGregor. I've been watching his career since Trainspotting and it is truly amazing how much talent this guy has. True, the music may not be the absolute best in the history of musicals (and not original either), but it is the EMOTION behind the singing that makes it so moving. "Your Song" is one of the best ballads I've ever heard recorded (and I am a DJ btw), but it's Roxanne that must take the prize for emotional effort. Just listen to their voices...really listen and you can hear the tortured characters coming through. This all culminates into a story that is so emotionally engrossing that all the technical and musical short-coming are totally drowned out by the sheer force of the tragedy you are seeing on screen. After all, this is a story about love...not music and camera angles...

Summary: Incredible! Masterpiece!
Review: I have never been so excitied after leaving a movie theatre! This movie was all I could talk about. My praise even convinced my reluctant husband to see it with me. He not only loved it as much as I did, he ran out and bought the soundtrack. Now he walks around the apartment singing Moulin rouge songs and dreaming with me about the day we can have our own copy and watch Moulin Rouge as often as we like! This movie is the last thing that inspired me in a long time.

Summary: One of the Most Innovative Films in the Last Decade
Review: You don't have to like Nicole Kidman or Ewan McGregor. You don't have to like musicals, or covers of famous pop/rock songs. Shoot - you don't even have to like the plot. But no matter what, you can't walk away from seeing Moulin Rouge without a huge respect for what director Baz Luhrmann was able to accomplish in a little over two hours. The plot is nothing new: enter starving playright (McGregor) who falls in love with an unattainable star (Kidman) obssessed over by a very rich and powerful duke (Richard Roxburgh). Set the story in Paris at the end of the 19th Century at the legendary Moulin Rouge, and you have an appropriate mingling of bourgeouis and bohemian. It shouldn't be surprising that I found the plot trite and slow at-times, but I still believe Moulin Rouge is one of the most innovative films released in the last decade. It propels modern film in yet another new dimension with its visual hyperkineticism. I've never seen a movie so surreal and energetic that was shot so effectively.... I realize this isn't everyone's idea of a good flick (some have told me that they didn't like it for that very reason), but there is still plenty more to enjoy about the movie. The costumes and scenery are unbelievably vibrant, virtually assuring its designers Oscar nods, and leaving the audience marveling at the constant swirl of images on the screen. The music is both uncreative (count only one original song) yet amazingly original (I never imagined "Like a Virgin" could be so entertaining or "Roxanne" so passionate). My only disappointment: before seeing the movie, I was eager to see how Luhrmann "reinvented the musical." As a fan of the lost genre, I was curious to witness how anyone could successfully present such a contrived style during our pessimistic era. After the film, I realized he couldn't, didn't, and had no intention of trying to - those claiming "reinvention" misunderstood him tremendously since his movie was near mockery of the genre. Luhrmann shows us that the musical is dead by layering remade-love-song after remade-love-song in the only "cheezy" way we know and expect, exemplified by the nearly hysterical "Elephant Love Song Medley". But again, that's not to say I disliked the film. After the movie I realized Moulin Rouge was special for other reasons - not for "reinventing the musical" but for innovating a new visual style of film future directors will attempt to replicate for years. It is for that reason that the appeal of Kidman, McGregor, the music, or the plot is irrelevant. You can still love this movie without any of them.

Summary: Spectacular! Spectacular!
Review: Moulin Rouge is a fantastic display of visual effects. Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor are fabulous as Satine and Christian. If you love musicals, this is a must-see! The use of popular songs only added to the enjoyment of this fast-paced, frenetic period piece. Nicole and Ewan can actually sing...no lip-synching here. It's funny, it's sad, and it's exciting.

Review: You sit in the chair with your Junior Mints, expecting an experimental film with outlandish costuming and idealized sentiments. But what you get instead is a passionate love story so visually stunning that it spins you around in your seat, lifts you up onto the highest point of the Eiffel Tower and drops you back down again into the depths of the Underworld. If you've ever wanted to feel a PART of a movie, this is the movie to see. Not only do you know these two characters love each other, but you feel their love. It makes them walk on clouds, and so do you. It makes them sing their hearts, and you feel it there too. See it. If only to put your eyes on a roller coaster and a cruise to the Bahamas all in two hours.

Review: this is a must see and own a copy for your film library. this love story is so compelling, the music between lovers is so captavating!!!! it stays in your mind for days...it brings you to a great vunerable high...and then so sadly...low to a heartbreaking ending...your are left in awe and sorrow...no words can explain your feelings...and so you must see it again....
