Summary: absolutely sensational
Review: I was skeptical about this video given the mixed reviews in the theater. However, I was completely won over by the video. In a day of such little originality in movies, this is a breath of fresh air. I loved this movie--Jim Broadbent's turn as the owner of Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman's very good performance and especially Ewan McGregor's singing. Your Song is a high point for the movie. Overall, a very surprised high thumbs-up.

Summary: Baz should watch more musicals
Review: In the commentary on this DVD, the director, Baz Luhrmann, says, "We had to edit out much of the musical and dance sequences to advance the storyline,". What he misunderstands is that most musicals have a very simple storyline, and that people enjoy them more for their music, dance, and overall style. By trimming these parts, he's left us with a bland, obvious story about forbidden love. Ho hum. Thankfully, the DVD has most of the musical sequences restored as part of the special features. If you appreciated the film's audacity despite its flaws, the DVD is certainly recommended, if only to know what could have been.

Review: This has to be the most obnoxious film I've ever seen. The sets and costumes are visually stunning, but I felt the pace of the film to be manic to the point of being nauseating. I really, really tried to like this film, but ended up turning it off half way through.

Summary: "Spectacular Spectacular"
Review: This is an event! Baz Luhrmann (director of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, a film that, while I didn't like, I admired for its advancement of the form) has made a thoroughly modern musical set in 1899 (no easy feat) using pop songs as the primary medium. The much-talked-about singing talents of Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are, at least on first viewing, passable enough for this film. Plus, they lend a natural feel to the characters, as if you or I were singing (with our less-than-trained voices) to a loved one. The story is not what's important here, it is the spectacle. This could have easily given the title of the production within--Spectacular Spectacular--because obviously Luhrmann was reaching for this and he succeeds. I listened to some of the songs on the soundtrack and found that they did not have the same effect I had experienced without the accompanying visuals. I would hazard a guess that a second viewing would not hold the same enthrall as the first, introductory, overwhelming, oh-my-god-ness of the first. Amazing!

Summary: One of two movies I've ever walked out of
Review: The costumes were wonderful, and that's the only compliment I can give this movie. I didn't find it a "feast for the senses" like at least one other reviewer here said: it assaulted my senses by being garish, obnoxious, loud, and plotless. The incessant homages to modern songs was mildly funny the first time, less funny the second time, and grating on my nerves the 3rd, 4th, 5th,...infinity, time. The director's attempt to marry the nostalgic with the modern to produce humor or art failed miserably. Being an optimist, as well as someone who likes musicals and "artsy" things, I kept hoping this movie would get better. I suffered through most of it and finally walked out. It is truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Summary: Not the same old cabaret...
Review: It COULD have been bad, or at best mediocre, but due to the creative genius of the people who made this film I got to experience something so very original and entertaining that I hope everyone gets to share the experience! Moulin Rouge is the exotic cabaret located in the seemingly risqué part of Paris of 1900. The daring and wealthy go to this den of erotica to get a taste for the spicy side of life. But little does society know, a very often told and what could have been mediocre love story of how true love triumphs over all that glitters with gold prevails! Moulin Rouge is not a musical, not an opera, and certainly not a straight-forward drama. It's a fictitious love story told in a one hundred year old setting using music from the 1960's, 70's and 80's, with a distinctly artsy type of presentation. Hundreds of people in very exotic costumes dance and sing in a variety of situations throughout the movie, making it pure eye candy for the movie audience. The voice heard when Kidman or McGregor sings is real and a pleasantly surprising talent to enjoy. I will recommend this is an absolutely impressive way to test your new digital DVD surround sound entertainment system. If you don't have one, I will strongly suggest that you make friends with someone who does or see the movie in the theater. It is probably the most enjoyable part of the whole movie experience.

Summary: uh. . . hello?
Review: A question I'd like to pose to the admirers of this film and it's DVD counterpart: Amongst the *Goodies* found on the double disk release, was "The Story" (or ANY story or narrative, for that matter) found anywhere? Maybe tucked away in some of the storyboards? Maybe in some obscure Easter Egg? I give the movie two stars primarily for the fine, sharp cinematography of Donald McAlpine and beautiful production design by Catherine Martin, but the director Baz Luhrmann, though a very capable producer (having birthed this 127 minute long MTV video), is cleary suffering from "The Emperor's New Clothes" syndrome. And so it seems are most who fawn over this paean to Attention Deficit Disorder.

Review: well, after reading 50 customer reviews i've been able 2 tell that either you hate it, or you love it. i watched it and ended up loving it. Ewan McGregor is gr8, but i didn't like Nicole Kidman. i never have, i don't see what Cruise saw in her. But i can see everythnig that Ev sees in Ewan. (for those of u little Ewan Fans you know who i'm talking about, for those of you who don't: that's his wife..ooooooo, i'm jealous!!) newz...i recomend this movie 2 neone who enjoys dancing, singing, freedom, beauty, truth, and above all things LOVE." :) ><>

Summary: McGregor the Gr8!!!
Review: I have 2 say one thing first, when i sat down 2 watch this movie i DID expect it 2 b MUCH better. i guess i was expecting 2 much, but by the end of the movie i was in tears of joy and happiness. this is a gr8 movie. McGregor has so many sides 2 him. he can play nething and everything ppl throw @ him. whether it being a young writer in search of love, an employee working for the stock-market, or a young ambiscious Jedi apprentice who embarks on a galactic mission and kills an evil sith!! McGregor can do everything!! ecspecially sing. i bought the soundtrack for Moulin Rouge b4 i ever saw the movie. by the time the movie came out on video i was singing along with all the charectors. my friend had 2 tell me 2 sit down and shut-up. well, i can go on all day about how gr8 this movie was and how sexy Ewan McGregor is, but i won't because i'm limited to 1,000 words, so i'll leave you with: "this movie is a gr8 story for everyone 2 see. i recomend it 2 neone who loves singing dancing, AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, LOVE." lol. :) ><>

Summary: Whether you like musicals or not, this movie's a wild ride!
Review: Roughly 10-15 minutes into Moulin Rouge I asked myself - "What the hell am I watching?" Afterwards, however, I thought - "THAT was very cool!" Set in a Paris theatre at the turn of the last century, Moulin Rouge is well more than what meets the eye...and ear. It delivers what I can only describe as a Musical Collage. You literally get whisked away to a magical/musical wonderland filled with contemporary songs ranging from Madonna to Nirvana, Elton John to The Police, and much more. The way the filmmakers adapted all of these songs into a single cabaret style (along with some INSANE special effects!) couldn't have been better. My first impression was - "Why are these people singing Smells Like Teen Spirit when it's supposed to be 1899?"
But, they make it work! It was also great to see Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman play (and sing) roles like these. I was already an admirer of Ewan's work, but I can now honestly say that Nicole is much more than a beautiful face. She was spectacular AND sexy...sorry Tom! Moulin Rouge can be dizzying to watch at times, because of its frantic editing and wild imagery, but like a good roller coaster - it's ALL part of the ride.
